Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

If she literally wouldn’t take her socks off and wore the same ones all week, day and night, then you might have a point.

Blimms · 20/04/2026 16:52

Come on people!

Whatwouldnanado · 20/04/2026 16:54

Buy her a voucher for a pedicure? Other than that say absolutely nothing. Unless you never want her to holiday with you again.

TinselAngel · 20/04/2026 16:45

Have you asked her why? Is she self conscious about her feet? Do shoes rub her feet if she doesn’t wear socks?

Why?

Why?!!!!!!

Why are you wearing that yellow shirt today, why not the red one, do you have a problem with red, whats red ever done to you, are you triggered by red, do you need therapy?

No one needs a reason why they are wearing a garment.

Unless its a wedding dress for shopping or something. But even then. Meh.

FlapperFlamingo · 20/04/2026 16:56

She’s 21 - you need to never mention this (and anything else you bang on about to her) again. She isn’t going to overheat, she gets to choose what she wears.

hahabahbag · 20/04/2026 16:58

My dd won’t show her feet (apart from sun lounger to pool) maybe it’s a young adult thing?

Only that it might be something the OP can assist with- eg recommendation of comfortable footwear.

DottieB · 20/04/2026 17:01

Has she always done this? If not, I agree there could be some aspect of her feet that she has become self conscious about - wonky toes, smell, scars?
Or she could be like my dad who just really doesn’t like bare feet - on anyone, anywhere!

AppropriateAdult · 20/04/2026 17:03

I also thought you were going to say she was a toddler… and my advice was still going to be “Pick your battles.” But she’s an adult… Confused

CopeNorth · 20/04/2026 17:05

Assuming this post is for real, YABU. Leave the poor girl alone. Why the need to control what another adult wears?

allthingsinmoderation · 20/04/2026 17:06

Not really its her choice.
Have you asked her why she prefers to wear socks in such a hot climate?

HoppityBun · 20/04/2026 17:06

Everyone used to laugh at men who wore socks with sandals, as though it’s a particularly British weakness and a sign of irredeemable cringe. Experience has taught me that, in hot weather, socks stop feet from being unpleasantly sweaty.

If the daughter gets uncomfortable, then she always has the option to take them off. She might actually do so if she doesn’t already feel subjected to criticism for wearing them in the first place.

BernardButlersBra · 20/04/2026 17:07

This impacts on you how?! I’m sure you do lots of things that annoy her

She’s 21. I very much doubt she needs or wants recommendations for “comfortable footwear” from her mum.

she’s more than old enough to realise some shoes are more comfortable than others and buy accordingly.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 20/04/2026 17:07

Over heat 😂

This post wins Mumsnet today.

Tontostitis · 20/04/2026 17:07

I did similar around my mum. Took her years to realise I'd had a tattoo.

Riverpaddling · 20/04/2026 17:08

Surely no-one here is daft enough to give a serious reply to the OP Grin

mortgagefreesoon5 · 20/04/2026 16:45

She's probably got a tattoo she doesn't want you to see.

I had a tattoo on my ankle when I was 17 and wore socks for awhile to hide it from my mum. So it’s possible.

Or she just likes wearing socks

I’ve reported it.

Christ Alive

Did you mean 21 months old OP and not 21 years old??

Because you cannot seriously be posting about a 21 year old overheating, can you?

Luckyingame · 20/04/2026 17:12

Jesus.
And this is one of the reasons I'm so glad I was out of my parents' at 22. Another country, not gloating. 47 now and still remember my tiny studio flat, my job and the personal space and freedom.
OP, I'm sure your daughter can decide this personal preference herself.

mrbojangle · 20/04/2026 17:12

Socks and sandals are trendy now apparently!!

She’s an adult and capable of making her own decisions! If she want to wear socks so be it! No one has died wearing socks in warm weather!

AprilMizzel · 20/04/2026 17:16

If she's 21 - she can decide if she wants to wear socks or not.
(Though I do wonder if there is a tatoo to hide.)

I have opposite issue two aren't keen on them at all - but that's their issue to deal with as they are over 18.

aspirationalferret · 20/04/2026 17:16

Huh? She’s 21?! It’s her choice. If that’s all you have to worry about then you’re doing grand!

she won’t overheat!
