Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

OP posts:

Is this a joke post?

AgnesX · 20/04/2026 16:42

If she wants to wear socks let her. It's really not a big deal.

SerendipityCat · 20/04/2026 16:42

She’s 21, more than old enough to make her own choices. Why do you care?

Arlanymor · 20/04/2026 16:43

She's 21 and you're trying to tell her what to wear on her feet? If she wants to look like a geography teacher on holiday that's up to her.*

*Sorry my almost-stepdad was a geography teacher and socks 'n' sandals was his perennial holiday look. Even in the rain, even in the UK.

hellospring26 · 20/04/2026 16:44

Are you for real?

MrsMitford3 · 20/04/2026 16:44

I bet if you wore socks and slides she'd ditch them soon enough 😂

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 20/04/2026 16:44

She's an adult. You don't get to tell her what to wear any more.

If she's finding it too hot, I'm sure she will figure out her own solution.

DreamyScroller · 20/04/2026 16:44

She's not going to 'overheat' from socks with sandals, OP.

CointreauVersial · 20/04/2026 16:44

I thought you were going to say she was 2......

At 21 I'd be pretty unhappy if my mum dictated whether or not I wore socks. Just leave her to sweat, if that's what she wants to do.

PinkyFlamingo · 20/04/2026 16:45

It's her choice as an adult what to wear. I have no idea why this bothers you so much, it's not your feet.

Mischance · 20/04/2026 16:45

Overheat 😂

PrincessFluffyPants · 20/04/2026 16:45

Is she self conscious about her feet? Verruca? Fungal nail?

Octavia64 · 20/04/2026 16:45

All the young people wear socks and slides.

haven’t you noticed?

TinselAngel · 20/04/2026 16:45

Have you asked her why? Is she self conscious about her feet? Do shoes rub her feet if she doesn’t wear socks?

mortgagefreesoon5 · 20/04/2026 16:45

She's probably got a tattoo she doesn't want you to see.

Everyonelikesam · 20/04/2026 16:45

I assume you are joking. Surely no-one could really worry about an adult "overheating" because they are choosing to wear socks.

Usernamenotfound1 · 20/04/2026 16:46

TinselAngel · 20/04/2026 16:45

Does it matter why?

is it anyone else’s business?

Raindropskeepfallingon · 20/04/2026 16:46

I wouldn’t care if my child wore socks on holiday, much less an adult. No one overheats because they’re wearing a pair of socks. Some people, myself included, find it more comfortable to wear them. Leave the woman alone, it’s her body and she gets to make her own clothing choices.

SALaw · 20/04/2026 16:46

There was a post like this last summer too. Let her wear socks if she wants to wear socks ffs. She’s old enough to make her own sartorial decisions.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/04/2026 16:47

Why do you feel the need to control your adult daugthers fashion/comfort choices? You're the weird one here.

Blimms · 20/04/2026 16:47

Daftest, made up post I’ve read in a while.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/04/2026 16:48

Surely it’s up to her!

She could equally be thinking “aren’t all those people’s sandals etc rubbing their feet with no socks? And the smell of bare feet! I don’t really like seeing everyone’s bare feet, I wish they’d wear socks”

Not saying she’d be right but it’s as sensible as what you’re saying

LovelyPombear · 20/04/2026 16:49

She’s 21, ffs

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 20/04/2026 16:49

She’s twenty-fucking-one.

SerendipityCat · 20/04/2026 16:49

I meant to add that this is yet another in a series of utterly pointless posts which have been wasting forum bandwidth in the last week or so. Grandma’s remarks about her grandson’s fake tan, a work colleague with an imaginary dog, now a daughter’s socks. I know I’m old and grumpy, but Jesus, is it getting tiresome.
