Daughter won't take her socks off on holiday

Hi,

I am going on holiday to Gran Canaria with my eldest daughter in a few weeks time. The weather of course will be quite warm and there's something that bugs me about my daughter when we go on a sunshine holiday. Whatever she is wearing on her feet (sliders, crocs & sandals) she will pair them with socks, even in boiling weather! Personally I am a flip flop and bare feet all day kind of woman. Is anyone else's son or daughter reluctant to take their socks off on holiday or is it just mine? I do worry she will overheat one of these days even at 21 years old. Is there anything I could say to her about this to convince her to ditch the socks?

Surely sun hitting the skin directly is much more heating than if you have a layer of something like cotton eg socks between your skin and the sun?

Butterme · 20/04/2026 17:22

Leave her alone.

I wear socks any chance I get because they’re soft and warm.

But my DD absolutely hates wearing them and has done since she was a baby.

Everyone is different.

ComfyKnickers · 20/04/2026 17:24

Are you this controlling about other things too?

Isobel201 · 20/04/2026 17:25

in warm weather, socks will feel more comfortable than sweaty feet inside crocs or sandals.

Lomonald · 20/04/2026 17:26

We were in lanzarote some under 25s were skelping about in socks and sliders they looked like they were coping fine they were not fainting or anything!

Have you asked her why? Is she self conscious about her feet? Do shoes rub her feet if she doesn’t wear socks?

Because she’s 21 and that’s what they do now.

honeylulu · 20/04/2026 17:31

Of course she won't "overheat" from wearing socks.

I think it looks silly but that's my problem. Sone people like to wear socks because it stops their shoes rubbing or they hate getting sandy feet or they prefer sweat to be wicked away by the fabric. Plus it's fashionable at the moment god knows why.

Lomonald · 20/04/2026 17:33

I never wear flip flops on holiday i like my feet enclosed and I wear those foot liners my feet are never too hot.

Are the 4% who voted YANBU OP's own sock puppet accounts?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/04/2026 17:35

It's been the preferred way to wear Crocs, sandals and slides for years - first saw it with Y10 some time around 2014.

Saves them blisters, for a start - and makes a clear differentiation between them and their 'old' Millennial and Gen X parents.

NancyJoan · 20/04/2026 17:35

Will she overheat? No
Will she look a bit daft? Yes
Will mentioning it help at all? Also no

EndorsingPRActice · 20/04/2026 17:39

My DS, who is 23, is just like this. I don’t think I commented after he was secondary school age…

Kokonimater · 20/04/2026 17:40

This is hysterical

Doggymummar · 20/04/2026 17:41

I love socks and sandals and sliders too, What's wrong with it?

ItsABarbecueShowdown · 20/04/2026 17:42

Overheat! My dc went to school in Australia and wore socks and close toed shoes right through school, as did every other child. There was no air con in the school and was hotter on a daily basis than grand caneria in spring ever is.

As an aside, it’s the fashion to wear socks and slides.

I wouldn’t be seen dead in flip flops.

She's probably got a tattoo she doesn't want you to see.

This was my first thought too! The real sign will be if she goes swimming in them.

tallwivglasses · 20/04/2026 17:44

Show her this thread 😊

I can understand your concern. A cousin of mine was much the same, always wearing socks in a heatwave, and she eventually paid a high price - over two months in hospital with a bad case of feetburn, requiring surgery and grafts etc.

The specialist said that her continual sock-wearing in the heat had basically turned both feet into toasted sandwiches. All feet contain a certain amount of natural cheese, which will melt when trapped between layers of increasingly scorched "crust" on the outside of the feet.

When the paramedics finally got her socks off, the sight was both tragic and nauseating, although the smell was reportedly very tempting, like freshly toasted ham and cheese on sourdough.

Lymyk · 20/04/2026 17:45

My 21y wear socks and trainers, whatever the weather. She doesn’t like sandals!

Instructions · 20/04/2026 17:45

What on earth does it matter?

Only that it might be something the OP can assist with- eg recommendation of comfortable footwear.

Maybe she's comfortable is socks and whatever footwear she's chosen to wear.

Onlythesaneones · 20/04/2026 17:50

Sensible.
A colleague of mine lost a toe after getting a tiny cut on holiday!

henlake7 · 20/04/2026 17:52

Mind your business OP! People can wear socks when and where they like!

Personally I have ice blocks for feet so it generally has to be 30C or above before I even consider going sockless!
