Am I overreacting to DH’s April Fools??

This morning DH took the dog for a walk and he came back covered in “blood” and so was the dog. He came back “hysterical” and told me the dog had been savagely attacked by another dog. I was in panic mode and I ran over to next doors as she is a vet to see what to do. When we both came back from hers to the dog, DH says “April Fools” which I (and she) found extremely irritating. The blood he got from the cupboard Halloween storage. I felt humiliated, embarrassed and didn’t find it funny at all. He thinks I’m being a spoil sport!

AIBU? Am I being a wet lettuce or is this too far?

I remember when a prank was like a jolly jape, and not just kicking another person in the bawbag (literally or emotionally - like OP’s DH did to her) and laughing.

That’s what FIL did on 1 April 2020 when he told us his mum (DH’s nan) had died from COVID so yeah his side of the family can be like that.

Okay, so he was brought up with these kind of 'extreme' pranks - give him a break!

I actually thought it was fairly funny!
Although, he was a little unreasonable not to say 'April Fools' before you reached your neighbours door.

stayathomegardener · 01/04/2026 19:43

What a complete fuckwit.

It's not funny at all - that sick, shocked feeling when you receive bad news gets seared into your brain.
Deliberately making someone feel that far a joke is unforgivable.

It's an April Fools, lighten up!

There's something wrong with anyone who would find that funny.
Let me guess, you'd laugh your arse off if your DH told you your child had been killed by a car on a walk as a funny prank?

TrashHeap · 01/04/2026 19:55

Your husband is an absolute fucking prick.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/04/2026 19:59

That’s not remotely funny! April fools are supposed to be silly and lighthearted.

They’re not meant to be just anything you can get another person to believe, even if it’s traumatic.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 01/04/2026 20:02

Bet you ended up having to wash the fake blood off the dog too right? Knobhead.

mrsCtheRed · 01/04/2026 20:02

What a gobshite! YANBU, I'd be absolutely livid 😤😤

PurpleReindeer2 · 01/04/2026 20:03

Not funny at all. He is an idiot.

PorridgeEater · 01/04/2026 20:05

What a stupid and immature man.
Tell him to grow up - and apologise to your neighbour whose time he wasted.
Don't know how you can have any respect for someone like this.

CoraPirbright · 01/04/2026 20:08

What an utter prick. I absolutely could not be married to someone like this. I have a good sense of humour and can laugh til I cry at a huge number of things. But to make you think that your dog is frightened and in pain and then to involve a neighbour….I have no words.

CoraPirbright · 01/04/2026 20:08

I wonder if he would find a night on the lawn funny?

UnhappyHobbit · 01/04/2026 20:14

Anything that involves pretending people have been in accidents is just extremely poor form.

Your DH needs his head seeing to imo

Couldyounot · 01/04/2026 20:14

Fucking hell. For me, something like this would be firmly in the box labelled "if you ever do anything like that again we are done".

diddl · 01/04/2026 20:14

I think that's grounds for divorce!

Zanatdy · 01/04/2026 20:18

Oh i’d be absolutely raging. That is not funny at all.

Whatever day of the year he did this to OP it would be cruel and unfunny.
If you realy think April 1st makes it ok then I think you must be as psychopathic as OP's H.

Catcatcatcatcat · 01/04/2026 20:20

I’m not sure I could forgive that.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 01/04/2026 20:20

What an absolute dickhead. An adult doing anything ’april fool’ is ludicrous enough, but this would make me detest him.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 01/04/2026 20:23

I expect he has been round to the neighbour with flowers.

NotMrPerfectAfterAll · 01/04/2026 20:23

What a fucking prick

Catwalking · 01/04/2026 20:25

Hope vet sends a large bill, see if ‘D’ h can find fun in that?

Equally, @Cannaebebothered you could just as easily say op WASN’T brought up with these kind of ‘extreme’ pranks, give her a break!!

you’ve already acknowledged he went too far, by allowing someone else to be drawn into his prank. So it sounds like you and he both enjoy the feeling of upsetting people beyond acceptable norms, for no good reason.
