Am I overreacting to DH’s April Fools??

This morning DH took the dog for a walk and he came back covered in “blood” and so was the dog. He came back “hysterical” and told me the dog had been savagely attacked by another dog. I was in panic mode and I ran over to next doors as she is a vet to see what to do. When we both came back from hers to the dog, DH says “April Fools” which I (and she) found extremely irritating. The blood he got from the cupboard Halloween storage. I felt humiliated, embarrassed and didn’t find it funny at all. He thinks I’m being a spoil sport!

AIBU? Am I being a wet lettuce or is this too far?

Dumb Ass GIF by Law Office of Robert Eckard

What a dickhead your DH is! Not remotely funny. Can’t imagine what the vet must be thinking about your stupid Dumbass Husband!

This. As a dog lover and owner, I’d be so so upset. Horrible “joke” horrible man.

And embarrassed! Imagine being married to someone like that. 😒

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/04/2026 22:43

It was a bit OTT for a prank. The DH should have stopped OP before she ran off. Pranks are supposed to be good natured and not terrifying. If your family doesn't have form for this manner of joking he took it too far.

Friendlygingercat · 01/04/2026 22:43

A collegue once pulled an AF prank which nearly got him dismissed for gross misconduct. The culprit was someone in authority (think team leader) and forged a letter apparently from the CEO and sent it to a co worker. The letter instructed her to appear for a disciplinery interview the following day to discuss her future in the organization. The the poor girl was completely taken in until it was revealed as a jest. She ripped the letter up but it was retrieved and passed around the office as a "joke". Everyone was laughing at that poor girl. When the section head heard about it he felt he could not deal with it (as an example of corporate bullying) and it went to the CEO. The culprit was given a written warning and told it would remain on his record for 3 years. The staff in that department was broken up and transfered in the following weeks. This is one of the nastiest jokes I have ever heard of because of the way a team leader misused their authority to influence others.

kotordreams · 01/04/2026 22:47

Your husband is an arse. I love that your first priority was the vet rather than first aid for him. Even panicking your instincts said dog first, husband/dickhead second

Active13 · 01/04/2026 22:50

What was your DH's reaction when the vet & you didn't find it funny.
Did he apologize?

hettie · 01/04/2026 23:15

How the fuck is that funny?

manaliiiive · 01/04/2026 23:15

Yanbu, it’s a horrible prank because it plays into your fears.

My cousin once pranked my late grandmother decades ago. She was widowed, living alone, a bit eccentric and disorganised (I have an ADHD diagnosis and we definitely share similar traits) in a remote corner of Scotland.

Anyway, he called her pretending to be a TV licence inspector and had her tearing the house apart looking for the physical licence. Didn’t stop even though she was distraught and found the whole thing hilarious.

Cruel. I think your DH was cruel also

Bristolandlazy · 01/04/2026 23:19

No you aren't over reacting, anyone would be shocked and upset by that. He's a fucking idiot. He wasted your neighbours time too. How embarrassing.

DugnuttEyeBoogies · 01/04/2026 23:22

Cannaebebothered · 01/04/2026 21:49

There's at least one other.

It was a joke - that's all! No harm intended. I actually think the funniest part was when OP got the neighbour involved (even though it was a little cruel of OPs DH to let it get that far). OP was totally had! I bet he's still laughing about it all.

P.S. I'm definitely not a cruel person. Just easily amused.

He told her that he and their dog had been attacked - how can you possibly say “no harm intended” - surely he would know their appearance covered in “blood”, acting hysterical, saying they had been attacked would make the OP very distressed, as it did?

He deliberately and cruelly setup his wife for emotional pain and distress. What other outcome would be expected, her to shrug her shoulders and go oh well dear? No, of course she was going to be hugely upset. That’s cruel, not funny.

If this amuses you, well, again, long hard think time.

SqueakyFromme · 01/04/2026 23:25

i think this is fictional

Wiseplumant · 01/04/2026 23:26

Not funny, he's a knobend.

That’s what FIL did on 1 April 2020 when he told us his mum (DH’s nan) had died from COVID so yeah his side of the family can be like that.

There’s funny and there’s shitty.

Both are shitty.

That is all.

That has to be the most disgusting, unfunny April Fool ever. Angry

sittingonabeach · 02/04/2026 00:11

@Cannaebebothered our dog used to get upset if he could sense we were upset. If DH had done this to me I would have been really emotional which would have upset our dog, so cruel.

Cherryicecreamx · 02/04/2026 00:18

That's a step too far! He should have been running after you as you go to the neighbours telling you it's a "joke"! Not allowing you to go ahead with it. He clearly thinks it's funny because he was willing to announce "April Fool's" in front of her too.

Jupiterx · 02/04/2026 00:18

Well i know someone that got told today that their nan had passed away duing the night, said person said yeah yeah not falling for that crap.
Well it was not a joke she indeed pass away.

Ferrissia3 · 02/04/2026 01:07

Nothing funny about this - your husband sounds like a absolute moron. I hope you show him this thread.

Empress13 · 02/04/2026 01:25

Not funny what a twat

its one thing to do a silly prank but to do it about family friends or pets is highly immature and bordering on mental abuse. i think i would be leaving him for that if it was me. how traumatizing

CustardySergeant · 02/04/2026 11:55

Has he apologised to you and your neighbour, OP?

SorcererGaheris · 02/04/2026 12:08

Lifeomars · 01/04/2026 20:51

So thinking that your dog and (idiot) husband have been victims of an attack by another dog is funny? oh my aching sides, oh such hilarity and jolly japes not. Have a little think about the emotions someone would experience after seeing what looks like nasty injuries, imagine the distress and possbible panic. Would you double up with laughter when you heard the words "April Fool"?

@Lifeomars

I sometimes hope that those who think this kind of cruel prank is funny - because intentionally causing such distress and pain IS cruel - should have the same thing done to them. I doubt they'd see the funny side if they were the ones hurt.

SorcererGaheris · 02/04/2026 12:12

Cannaebebothered · 01/04/2026 21:21

People use fake blood to play tricks all the time ie. Halloween to spook. 'Oh no, I've sliced my finger off!'

Chill out! No one got hurt.

@Cannaebebothered

But someone did get hurt.

The OP got emotionally hurt - scared and distressed that her dog/husband were severely injured.

"Hurt" isn't just referring to physical pain. The OP felt emotional pain/distress. So this prank did indeed hurt someone.
