Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

@Busybeemummbut are those British expats in Spain living off the Spanish taxpayer? Unlikely

No they are not living off the Spanish tax payer. They have to have a non lucrative visa and private health insurance. So they have to prove they have enough income to provide for themselves and any dependants. This is why they are generally welcome in a Spanish town as they are boosting the economy and not seen to be on the take. Very different to the UK.

I bet they have to pay for their own interpreters though don't they !!

I've no idea. I'm French so I speak the language.
I speak the language here too.

The point is that nobody should be living in a country where they don't bother learning the language and become a drain on the system whilst staying in their self imposed groups.
Why would you want to live in a country where you make no effort to integrate and therefore contribute nothing?

You cant campaign against immigration without being called a far right racist whether you are either far right or racist or not.
When everyone who questions or campaigns against illegal immigration is smeared with the same brush it drives people towards racism and the far right as they can see ordinary non racists like themselves smeared as far right racists so they start to listen to the people who are rightly called far right and/or racist assuming that they are also being wrongly smeared. All to soon being called far right and/or racist become meaningless in the same way that transphobia has become a meaningless word as everything is transphobic

Shabana Mahmood seems to manage fine without being called a racist.

No one wants uncontrolled immigration.

But also people aren't going to allow racists to attack immigrants with impunity.

The simple fact is even on this thread where some posters are bringing up the level of immigration and the problems its causing they are being called racist, far right reform voters etc.
Yes some of the comments are borderline anti Islam (any actual islamaphobia would have been deleted) but the accusations of racism and far right reform voters is thrown at everyone.
It might not fit with the far left narrative but its true when you lie and smear everyone who disagrees with you as phobic, bigoted, racist or far right you create a situation where those words become meaningless and drive people who would normally be left wing or centrist to the right and far right. The far left are driving the rise in racism that the far right are exploiting.
Maybe if the far left would stop all the name calling and abusive tactics and actually listened to the valid concerns of most people we could come to a reasonable solution that didn't involve open borders or removal of all immigrants. But until the far left stop all the smear campaigns and violent disorder they will keep creating the far right problems

What 'far left' are you referring to that 'should be listening'? There is no far left in the UK with any sort of political power. We have a moderate left leaning government who have recently introduced some policies to curb immigration. Who is it that you believe has the influence and authority to be turning decent people racist?

Its a better life than they had, or they wouldn't be coming here, would they? How much more do you think British tax payers should be doing for them? Paying them £50 a week? £100? And that's on top of the dental bills (funny how I've not been able to get an NHS dentist for years, nor has anyone in my family), health care, food, housing, legal costs, phone bills. We really are a bunch of bastards arent we?

I was responding to the poster who seems to think asylum seekers are living a life of riley in the UK.

I'm pointing out that the £9.95 per week that asylum seekers get doesn't give anyone the life of Riley.

You've added all that crap about British taxpayers being a bunch of bastards who don't do enough all by yourself. Why do you see Brits see that way? That's awful.

How exactly is a massive display of your own culture/ religious beliefs in a host country automatically a sign of integration?

Because many other communities were invited to share the festivities and food.

Muslims are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

'All to soon being called far right and/or racist become meaningless in the same way that transphobia has become a meaningless word as everything is transphobic'

This is true. Criticise something and you are immediately labelled a bigot or a 'racist' or a 'phobe'.

It is bizarre how stating that we don't want thousands of young, fighting age men entering the country illegally from places full of warped ideology and extremists means we are racist.

Can you quote to where this was said in the thread? Because I've been here for the whole thread and I didn't see this at all.

They're not all welcome, the Spanish have had mass demos about Brits in Spain.

I was replying to a pp who said 'All to soon being called far right and/or racist become meaningless in the same way that transphobia has become a meaningless word as everything is transphobic'

It's all there in the posts you quoted. I don't think trans issues had been discussed either but here we are, threads develop and evolve.

Oh well they must be xenophobes/racists/haterz then if they're demonstrating about other nationalities, yes?

Nothing is there. The post you're referring to does not have any examples of people in the thread calling people racists for campaigning against immigration.

It's all smoke and mirrors from you and that poster, with no substance.

You'll have to ask Spaniards. Maybe they're just tired of hypocrisy.

Are you dismissing their concerns about immigration as simply being "tired of hypocrisy"?

Their concern about the effects British and German tourism and second homes are having on their housing supply and costs? No, I'm not dismissing it at all.

So you can understand how Spaniards may get tired of the influx of other nationalities who do not learn the language or integrate yet refuse to see how anyone in this country can feel the same way? Isn't that hypocrisy?

At least in Spain migrants are legal and have documents stating who they are.

Right so Spaniards concerns are valid. Brits are most definitely not. Got it. Grin

So not being tired of hypocrisy then but having genuine concerns. Why didn't you say so rather than saying they were tired of hypocrisy?

Gloria, why are you repeatedly ignoring that I've repeatedly said that no one wants uncontrolled immigration in the UK?

Where have you got the idea that I'm a proponent of an open borders immigration policy?

Can you quote to where I have said this?

Because Spaniards were probably watching the videos of English men trying to burn down a hotel of asylum seekers and thinking WTF.

Which Spaniards? I thought you were keen on supporting evidence?

Smilesinthesunshine · 19/03/2026 10:35

Certain parts of Spain had demonstrations due to housing concerns, which is why I said generally. Mostly Brits are welcome because they add to the economy and don't leech off the tax payers. If they haven't learnt the language they have to pay for their own interpreter when needed and rightly so.

We can make sweeping generalisations about some nationalities but not others it seems.

The ones protesting against Brits and Germans making it difficult for Spaniards to buy homes.
