Racism in uk

Charltonstrek · 18/03/2026 10:30

Im finding the level of racism here in the UK to be very unsettling and it seems to be getting worse and im finding it depressing as I have a Muslim partner and I wonder if there is a future here for him. Ive mostly witnessed this on social media with some very derogatory comments anybody else or am I too sensitive

The thread is about racism generally? No?

Did you read the post or just the title?

These stats are based on people actually reporting them in the first place and so therefore not completely reliable.

People of Muslim faith are also more likely to experience social disadvantage in education and employment therefore may also be less likely to report racism due to language barriers and not knowing who/how to report.

If you live in a country and can’t speak the language, of course you’re going to struggle! Maybe everyone living in the UK should learn to speak English then this would help reduce those barriers. Surely this is the answer to this problem! If I moved to Spain o would expect to be disadvantaged if I didn’t speak Spanish

I started school in the 2000s and racism was 10 times worse back then. It’s not as bad now but I still experience and witness racism from time to time.

I don't think this is actually the case. I think racism has got more covert so it's less obvious, but in some ways that's worse as it's easier to dismiss.

Although I think it's becoming more overt again in the last year or so.

Yes I read the post? It talks about racism in the UK then half way through gives the example of her Muslim husband, nothing in the post indicates it’s only talking about Muslims. Otherwise, surely it would refer to Islamophobia (which isn’t actually racism as Muslims are not a race or ethnic group. So it’s distinct)

emmetgirl · 18/03/2026 13:24

It feels like we’re heading back to the 1970s

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 13:05

I think you are right but per capita Jews are the most likely to experience racism. We have definitely been ignoring that as a society, it’s extremely sad and an indictment of where the Uk is today.

The OP was specifically relaying her feelings about racism her DH is facing for being Muslim and it's telling that you just had to compare that to racism to Jews. It's not a compare and contrast exercise.

My irony klaxon just exploded.

Ever thought maybe you're part of the problem?

At least that means we have the 80s to look forward to

A big problem is that the government, politicians and race baiters from both sides are quite happy for us all to be at each others throats as it allows them to get away with whatever they want to do and spin it so that it is someones elses fault.
It is the same method that they used when we were in the EU and it hasn't changed.

Hullabmoo · 18/03/2026 13:27

Social media is not the real world. In the real world, mostly people are less racist than they were fifty years ago. Social media is purely a force for toxicity in our society so I'd recommend getting off it.

I don't know why some posters are so invested in denying that Jewish people suffer the most racism per capita.

Indeed.

politicians and race baiters from both sides are quite happy for us all to be at each others throats

And, unfortunately, you can see from less than two pages in, there's plenty of people more than happy to get on board with it...

I'm not sure how people with lower education and employment, and poor English, have managed to get residency in the UK to be honest.

A lot of people who emigrated here in the last few decades were poor and poorly educated when they came and were brought in to do poorly-paid work. It's not their fault but entirely predictable that it would be a terrible idea.

Tipsowner · 18/03/2026 13:37

Statistically, the most educationally under-performing or disadvantaged group are white, working class boys. Closely followed by black boys of Caribbean extraction.

And yet there are many British 'expats' living in Spain eating their English breakfasts who don't speak a word of Spanish.

For those already here, it should be a requirement to attend English language lessons and speak English to a required standard. We need to learn from past errors like this. With youth unemployment as it stands immigrants now should be limited to highly skilled people only )who are much more likely to speak English)

I think the difference now is that we have the spectre of racists gaining more significant political power. We never had that to the same extent before. The thought that we could end up like the states with people getting randomly chucked into the back of vans is frightening.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 18/03/2026 13:40

There's racism everywhere. The UK is very diverse and tolerant.

And I totally disagree with that. If you go and live in another country you should have to learn the language to a reasonable level - even when I holiday somewhere I’ll try and learn the very basics before I go.

hazelnutvanillalatte · 18/03/2026 13:43

Busybeemumm · 18/03/2026 11:46

Where is your evidence for this? We had an MP who compared Muslim women wearing the burka as 'letter boxes' and still went on to be PM. Imagine if something like that was said about Jewish women who wear wigs?!

I can't find an updated figure but the below link from the Met Police reports a 1350% increase in antisemitic hate crimes in 2023, and incidents are still ongoing

In my own family, security is extremely heightened in schools and they have received multiple bomb threats as well as having to hire a private bus service to keep students safe after harassment - although adults managed to break into the bus and scream at the children anyway. Students are now not allowed to wear uniforms outside school. A family member was standing guard outside synagogue on the same day at the Manchester attack. There have also been multiple instances of harassment and violence in Jewish neighbourhoods, including beating a woman unconscious, throwing red paint on a Jewish nursery school, attacking school girls with broken bottles, buses refusing to stop for Jewish school children, and setting a family home on fire.

I would say the Jewish people have suffered the greatest ongoing persecution for their ethnicity over the last 2,500 years. How do you feel about antisemitism? Why don’t you want to discuss that?

I agree that people wherever they live should be able to integrate and learn the local language. Here in the UK that is English. I was however refering to reasons why the statistics for Muslim hate crime might seem lower (than for Jews) is due to less reporting which may be attributed to language barriers.

My view is that all people should learn English if they live in the UK and this would help with integration and getting the right support (as well as reporting hate crime).

Agreed. Context was lost unfortunately.

100% agree. I have been many times to the Middle East where women are largely covered up. In 40 degree heat dressed in a burka which is heavy to walk around in. Never mind - the men think its marvelous!

Personally I dont like the burka. If its that women's free choice then maybe although I still dont think in the UK it should be allowed (lots of other countries ban it). It doesnt do anything for women and women's rights.
