Do friends of rich people have no shame?

Reading about the Epstein files, the first thing that struck me was the awful photo of Andrew kneeling over what looks like a very young woman, looking extremely pervy.

The second thing was the emails from people like Fergie and Peter Madelson's husband asking for money. "I need 20 grand for rent, today." "I need 10 grand for an osteopath course." Have they no shame whatsoever? Surely if you're friends with a rich person, you're very careful not to mention financial needs so they don't think you're only after their cash? Let alone actually ask for handouts!

Friends ask non rich friends for help with rent etc sometimes...

LittleLapwing · 01/02/2026 21:48

Well, I mean - all the people listed very obviously have no shame.

I think that’s on them personally though, rather than a generic ‘friends of rich people’ issue.

PeonyPatch · 01/02/2026 21:49

I mean….. THIS is what you’re taking away from the release of the Epstein files…?

JuliettaCaeser · 01/02/2026 21:51

God we find the opposite- Dds best friend is from a seriously rich international family we end up spending more to be reciprocal!.

lazybone1 · 01/02/2026 21:52

entitled people have no shame

NotnowMildrid · 01/02/2026 21:53

I agree, it’s absolutely cringeworthy.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 01/02/2026 21:53

Some people are so shameful they will take money for favours from nonces. Some of those people are rich, some of them are not. This is how people are. Shameless people needing tens of thousands of pounds will cultivate and collect rich friends and ingratiate themselves.

Quite clearly, not the most important thing. That would be the abuse of women and girls by Epstein, Maxwell and strangely unknown "friends" among the obviously rich and/or powerful.

Still, the lack of class displayed in less disgusting matters is surprising.

Well exactly. You don't just invite yourselves to their house and ask them for ten grand between playdates.

The amount of amnesia that seems to be affecting the people involved - insane.

JuliettaCaeser · 01/02/2026 21:58

I’ve just spent more on her birthday present than I spent on dhs!

peanutbuttertoasty · 01/02/2026 22:20

They are surely code words being used for something nefarious?

guinnessguzzler · 01/02/2026 22:21

Agree OP, I find it so very odd. I suppose in the case of Fergie it was a less embarrassing option than the landlord going to the press about her not paying her rent but I would do almost anything before I begged a friend to pay my rent. And the osteopath course is just plain weird. Is that some kind of code or cover? Is it really a bribe or blackmail? Or do these people honestly not think they should have to save up or get a bank loan to be able to pay for their own career development?

Notsosweetcaroline · 01/02/2026 22:26

I also find it tacky op, it’s so embarrassing to get your hand out like that but they don’t seem to care,

TraitorsLantern · 01/02/2026 22:31

I found the Mandelson’s now husband one odd. How did Mandelson not have £10k?

Gahr · 01/02/2026 22:33

This is a bizarre way of looking at the issue. You're judging them for cadging when the real issue was that they were friends with a paedophile!

It's a trade off. Maxwell grew up with money and status. Then her father died in dodgy circumstances and left them all with no money. So she attached herself to JE. He had huge amounts of money but he wanted the trips to the Royal enclosure at Ascot and she knew/ had been to school with the right people. He wanted the upper class 'shine' and she wanted private jets and houses and designer clothes. Andrew and Fergie had the Royal connections that made JE respectable but everyone knows that British Royals below the heir and the spare are far poorer than they'd like to be but can't earn their money in conventional ways ( thick, unqualified, vulgar to work like us common folk) so they cultivate rich people in exchange for photos and favours and contacts. If those rich people have houses with multiple hidden cameras in then they're trapped.JE lends money to Andrew in exchange for a trip to Balmoral, an invitation to Buckingham palace. He gets what he wants and AMW maintains his lifestyle. When you're in that deep asking for money is probably the least vulgar thing you've ever done.

Beautifully put.

Dweetfidilove · 01/02/2026 22:43

They are shameless.
They are equally perverted or paedophilic themselves.
Many folks have zero morals and see nothing wrong with underage sex or other debauchery.
They are greedy enough to turn a blind eye to anything, if it means they can collect.
They are as exploitative as the exploiter, who they know will happily buy their collusion...

Spot on - these are very transactional relationships.no one worries about losing friends because of the moral depravity, complicity in exploiting others. These are the “devils darlings” and capitalism made it possible.

This is what I was thinking, as the blatant requests for money seemed so bizarre and rude.

Yes beautifully put.

Epstein knew exactly what he was doing, he encouraged it.

He was secretly filming guests with the sex workers and holding that over their heads.

That is one weird photo of AMW leaning over that women. It looks like he's in a CPR training session.

Pollyanna87 · 01/02/2026 22:49

I don’t understand why you’re expecting this particular group of people to behave in a manner which is at all recognisable to the average person. They’re keeping each other’s secrets, and those amounts of money were pocket change for Epstein.

Wafflesandcrepes · 01/02/2026 22:52

So pissed off with Labour right now. Oh so moralistic. Oh so judgey. But any occasion to get their grabby, grubby little hands on someone else’s money and they’re right in there. They disgust me. (I am - was - a Labour voter)
