Do friends of rich people have no shame?

Reading about the Epstein files, the first thing that struck me was the awful photo of Andrew kneeling over what looks like a very young woman, looking extremely pervy.

The second thing was the emails from people like Fergie and Peter Madelson's husband asking for money. "I need 20 grand for rent, today." "I need 10 grand for an osteopath course." Have they no shame whatsoever? Surely if you're friends with a rich person, you're very careful not to mention financial needs so they don't think you're only after their cash? Let alone actually ask for handouts!

Epstein had money. Andrew and Fergie wanted/needed it as did others. In giving what they needed he purchased influence and prestige. What we are not seeing is this happens in numerous relationships between rich people and unscrupulous officials. It is very clear Andrew lied and did not give a stuff about exploited women. If he was not the Queen's son he might well have been extradited.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 01/02/2026 22:54

They’re not friends… Epstein wanted their Royal influence and they wanted his cash. It’s a classic status /fame for money exchange. Not friendship.

I found the Mandelson’s now husband one odd. How did Mandelson not have £10k?

Many years ago, my aunt was a friend and neighbour of one of Mandelson's relatives. The relative told my aunt he was fed up of Mandelson asking for loans. He wanted to borrow enough for a deposit for a house. He's obviously used to begging.

The amount of amnesia that seems to be affecting the people involved - insane.

Yep and @peanutbuttertoastypost on code words

Fullmoan · 01/02/2026 23:03

It's staggering to read.
I have some staggeringly wealthy friends. I never asked for money even when I was skipping meals I was so short of cash.

I think it's clear though that these were transactional relationships not friendships.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/02/2026 23:09

Weird AMW photos but they don’t look in any way sexual - more like a demo of life saving/cpr.

It's all one big grift. I despise people who bow and scrape to the Royal Family. All those idiots who queued to see the Queen! What a lot of delusional, braindead sheep.

I remember the whole kerfuffle over Mandy’s mortgages and loans from back in the day. He liked the high life but seems the day job didn’t pay enough https://www.independent.co.uk/news/mandelson-hid-mortgages-from-lender-1103632.html?test_group=lighteradlayout
Oh and he’s just resigned from the Labour Party 🎉

Mandelson hid mortgages from lender

PETER MANDELSON took out four home loans worth almost pounds 600,000 and failed to tell his mortgage lender about three of them, a Commons committee revealed yesterday.

When he was sacked as ambassador, a commentator on the BBC said Mandelson was notorious for loving the high life while being in no position to afford it.

@Gahr
And the weirdos at Sandringham on Christmas Day asking a 10 year old child for selfies.

Agree!
It's grim and those who worship wealth and royalty sustain it

JacknDiane · 01/02/2026 23:22

SF and AMW did all this whilst raising 2 young girls.

Did they never equate the girls being trafficked as similar in age to their daughters?

What kind of low life are they?

BundleBoogie · 01/02/2026 23:23

Fergie and Mandy always were the epitome of crass.

We have some very rich friends and wouldn’t dream of taking a penny from them. In fact we probably overcompensate with our contribution to things.

Thoseslippers · 01/02/2026 23:24

No one gets to that level of wealth and power by being a decent human being.
Well almost no one im willing to imagine there might be some people who accidentally stumbled upon some invention or idea that ends up making them a mint.
But on the whole continuing to generate wealth and power at that level will involve some degree of entitlement abd willingness to exploit others.
Politeness and class would just be a type of charm in order to exploit and manipulate, it wouldn't be out of a genuine decency or empathy.
So no im not suprised at all. Of course they'll just openly ask for money because they feel they deserve to be given abd to have money on tap.
Ordinary people would never have the audacity because they haven't ben brought up with this kind of deep intrinsic confidence that they are important and of value. There's no shame in these people.
If there was they would not be able to exist in these positions of power or extreme wealth. They'd feel too guilty.

Forty85 · 01/02/2026 23:24

It was likely more a blackmail type situation because they had info on him and he knew it so would give them whatever hush money they wanted.

JacknDiane · 01/02/2026 23:24

Gahr · 01/02/2026 23:17

I agree, totally agree.

But the royals all seem happy walking to church on Xmas morning, like animals at the zoo.

I don't know what's worse.

LadyGAgain · 01/02/2026 23:24

I voted YABU because these people are despicable and vile, and you’re focusing on the wrong thing.

But still in the House of Lords….

MidWayThruJanuary · 01/02/2026 23:28

@JacknDiane
The next generation are being thrown to the wolves. Just like William and Harry 3 decades ago.

ThePieceHall · 01/02/2026 23:30

What money? There is no money. This is not your money. Anyone else love Jon Klassen’s books and recognise the universal theme of greed?

ShamedBySiri · 01/02/2026 23:32

plentyofsunshine · 01/02/2026 22:49

Yes beautifully put.

Epstein knew exactly what he was doing, he encouraged it.

He was secretly filming guests with the sex workers and holding that over their heads.

That is one weird photo of AMW leaning over that women. It looks like he's in a CPR training session.

Maybe he’s also learning osteopathy?

BeckyBloom · 01/02/2026 23:34

About the time of his mortgage debacle, I read an interview with Mandelson in which he described himself as exotic. Never laughed so much! He really thought he was something

Paperwhite209 · 01/02/2026 23:38

Epstein was probably more than averagely obliging (and let it be known that was the case) because he knew famn well
it would give him a hold over people.

MidWayThruJanuary · 01/02/2026 23:39

Mandy has resigned from the Labour Party.
