Romesh Ranganathan show with Sally Traffic messing around and just talking all the time and not playing music? I don't want to listen to them chattering away as if there's no audience.

OP posts:

Unfortunately they are presenters these days much more than DJs, particularly during the day, and few care about the music. I like a bit of banter, but I also want to listen to music AND know what song it is. The presenters far too often put too much emphasis on what they've got to say, and the laughs they're having in the studio, and don't even bother to tell us what song we're listening to.

BassinBas · 01/02/2026 12:41

I love Liza Tarbuck. She seems to be genuinely a little batshit in the finest way, and living her best life. RR just goes on and on, I agree. Vernon is a sulky wee prick, Scott mills is nice but dull. Trevor Nelson is brilliant and exactly what we needed for that slot. Sarah Cox is ok but I hate all the droning on with sad stories from listeners. Jeremy Vine is funny, a proper wind up merchant, but it gets samey , one to dip into really.

Like a pp I've started tuning in to radio 1 more now even though I'm mid fifties so way off their target audience - the presenters are cheerful and interesting and I get to hear more recent music.

I agree. Years ago DJ's used to announce the song and then very often "back announce it" too, so tell the listeners what they've just been listening to which is great if you've missed the beginning. These days they don't even bother to announce the song. I'm surprised the artists don't complain about it more.

Lobbygobbler · 01/02/2026 13:00

‘Vernon is a sulky wee prick.’ 😂Honestly couldn’t agree more!

Yes, but because of the unique way the bbc is funded, we are all paying obscene amounts to hear this drivel.

It's not rocket science and I don't know why so many posters are acting thick (just put on Spotify).

Let me spell it out.. Most of us enjoy a little bit of warmth and banter from a dj between songs. It humanises it and makes us feel less alone when driving or home alone or whatever.

A lot of us don't enjoy 'celeb' djs talking shit for absolutely ages just to hear the sound of their own voices.

BBC needs to get their house in order.

Patronising much?

The bbc is for tens of millions of people. You're not going to please them all.

OonaStubbs · 01/02/2026 14:50

Do the BBC radio DJs even get to hear the songs? I know the ones on Absolute don't. Some of the shows are played across the network so the songs are different on each station.

HolidayPlanningAgain · 01/02/2026 14:53

I love R2 on a Saturday all day until Liza comes on.
love that Emma Willis has joined the line up.

i’d take 100 Sally Traffics over having to listen to Richie “look at me” Anderson, how he’s got a career is beyond me, was happy he was kicked off the breakfast show as the afternoon DJ’s don’t interact with him much!

Newyearsameme26 · 01/02/2026 15:45

I find making a traffic person a co-presenter annoying, this is what is happening, they're taking over!

Omg me and dh have been saying this for the last few months! Its getting unbearable.

RaraRachael · 01/02/2026 16:18

I don't mind Sally and Richie but find the woman who's on with Scott Mills really annoying. I bet she's angling for her own show.

EleanorReally · 01/02/2026 16:30

not forgetting Bob Harris,
he is great, stepped into Johnnie Walker's shoes perfectly

Yes, I agree. She is almost taking over at times - I really find her flat voice irritating and don't give a flying fig about her life. Why Scott has to include her so much I don't understand. The show would be a lot better if she wasn't included so much.

Quickchangeartist · 01/02/2026 17:03

Sunday afternoon from after EP warbles off for a liquid lunch is excellent. Dermot, Rylan, Liza and Gary save Saturday.

Emma Willis. Fuck me, how inane is she? She had to go off yesterday. She won’t be back.

RR is not good. He comes over as completely disinterested. I think Sally doesn’t get him at all. I’m not surprised.

Scott Mills could fuck off with his stupid quiz and leave dead air that would be more engaging. He’s a snidey little prick.

Richie Anderson is appalling

RaraRachael · 01/02/2026 17:33

I'm enjoying EP being away for a few weeks. I'm not a massive fan of show tunes anyway and I find it odd that a presenter plays her own recordings fairly often. Michael Ball never does.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 01/02/2026 17:37

Of all the presenters I find annoying, Rylan is the most irritating. I thought it was Elaine Paige, but I'd forgotten about Rylan.

I have to admit, I am ridiculously easily put off by radio presenters' voices, way of speaking and general manner. I think it's that because you can't see them, it's all about the voice! I know I'm being unreasonable but I can't seem to help it!

RampantIvy · 01/02/2026 07:08

What other ways are there of getting traffic news when you are driving unless you are using Google maps?

Waze

LadyRadioGaga · 01/02/2026 17:52

I can see not everyone here goes for it but since I found Greatest Hits Radio I haven't looked back. Simon Mayo is a joy, especially the album show on Sundays. Andy Crane is good at 10 pm. I'm not a big Ken Bruce worshipper but he's OK.

All of them are preferable to the Radio 2 options with the potential exceptions of Rylan and Michelle Visage. Also better is 6 Music in the mornings with Nick Grimhaw.

Lobbygobbler · 01/02/2026 17:54

I think my issue with them is so many of them are thick as mince. I think good DJs have to be sharp as pins like Terry Wogan, the Don was. Michael Ball, Paddy McGuinness and others I could mention just annoy me with their lack of wit.

RampantIvy · 01/02/2026 17:55

Lifelover16 · 01/02/2026 17:43

Waze

I forgot about Waze. Isn't it owned by Google now?

SomewhereInMyHeart · 01/02/2026 18:52

I listen to 6Music during the week while WFH but love listening to Dermot on Sat morning. It’s the start of my weekend. If I sleep late I listen on catch up later in morning. I do agree that Sally Traffic is annoying. What proportion of the listeners find it useful?! Surely not many and rarely covers my area. I do wish Dermot didn’t allow ‘shout outs’ from people calling in. One of yesterday’s went on forever!

Also try and catch Mark Goodier on a Sunday. Loved him since I was a teenager!

And like pp I LOVED Radio Luxembourg! (208)

TheAutumnCrow · 01/02/2026 09:54

I was at the dentist having a horrible filling replacement done, so was trapped in The Chair. They had Greatest Hits Radio on; it was that pop master quiz by Ken Bruce that he’s so territorial about, where listeners ring in (which in itself needs banning) and have to, for example, name three hits by The Nolans. I was forced to listen to the whole stultifying thing. And the dentist, whose hand was in my mouth, was joining in.

‘And a big hello to Gaz, Den and Ron, and everyone else who knows me.’ Piss off.

Oh God poor you! You just reminded me that last time I was at the dentist getting a filling Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence came on the radio. It’s one of my favourite songs ever and I don’t want it associated with pain and discomfort! I think it was on Absolute Radio.

Dermot is good but Tony Blackburn on before him is better. The handover between them is great - small chat and dad jokes, just perfect for a morning listen.

RaraRachael · 01/02/2026 19:24

Talking of music at the dentist, my one abiding memory is hearing Echo and the Bunnymen's "The Cutter" - talk about inappropriate 😪

grumpygrape · 01/02/2026 21:28

I prefer presenters/DJs who treat me as if I was the only person they are speaking to, with just a whiff of acknowledgement there are other people listening. But they must also be knowledgeable about the music they play. Wogan (ten years since he died), Johnnie Walker who I took to bed when I was nine years old (virtually obviously!), Ken Bruce, Bob Harris, and a few others. I also enjoy listening to people who are interested in the people who contact them. Dermot O’Leary, Lisa Tarbuck, and a few others.

I moved a lot of my listening to commercial radio with Ken Bruce when he went to GHR and discovered another ex-BBC favourite, Simon Mayo, was there.

It’s good we all have different tastes or life would be boring.

CanwetalkaboutRalph · 01/02/2026 21:50

Haven't got a problem listening to Gary Davies, Tony Blackburn, Trevor Nelson and DJ Spoony.
Use to like Vernon Kay but now he seems to be very shouting and has started to grate on me.
Agree with RaraRachael about the woman on Scott Mills show. Very loud and when she talks it seems as if she's always laughing even when she's trying to be serious. I wish she'd leave. She is so infuriating.

AbbaDabbaDooh · 01/02/2026 22:13

I've never listened before but tuned in to the traitors. It seemed vaguely like let's laugh at the neurodivergent or menopausal woman, I don't know what the back story is.
