Romesh Ranganathan show with Sally Traffic messing around and just talking all the time and not playing music? I don't want to listen to them chattering away as if there's no audience.

OP posts:

‘And a big hello to Gaz, Den and Ron, and everyone else who knows me.’ Piss off.

Yes, that used to really irritate me too.

I always felt that Ken sounded less than thrilled when they reeled of a list of the world and its dog at the end of the quiz. 😆

chunkyBoo · 01/02/2026 10:08

Terry wogan was brilliant and used to have me in fits of giggles when driving
I like Rylan too, he’s got good rapport
I actually like Jeremy Vine, I like some of the guests, and he plays some good music from the past, The Chain was on when I switched on one day last week … the beat Fleetwood Mac song IMO

Cannedlaughter · 01/02/2026 10:16

People prefer different types of presenters. If you like Lisa Tarbuck, it’s likely that RR won’t be for you and visa-versa.
I think Sally really holds her own and I love the fact she’s not all gushy, saying everything and everyone is wonderful , even to the celebs being interviewed. Credit to her.

Phoenix1Arisen · 01/02/2026 10:16

Though I wouldn't welcome a return to the false, high pitched, perceived as posh way of speaking from the fifties (even QE11 toned it down over the years) I'd listen to it a lot more if they didn't keep assaulting my ears with their poor way of speaking.

The glottal stop is alive and well and living on Radio 2. Go*a beer bi of bu*er on your bread, mae?

As a northerner I welcomed regional accents but I really hate the way some of the presenters lay it on and how Paddy McGuinness appears to make himself sound as stupid as possible.

I was at the dentist having a horrible filling replacement done, so was trapped in The Chair. They had Greatest Hits Radio on; it was that pop master quiz by Ken Bruce that he’s so territorial about, where listeners ring in (which in itself needs banning) and have to, for example, name three hits by The Nolans. I was forced to listen to the whole stultifying thing. And the dentist, whose hand was in my mouth, was joining in.

‘And a big hello to Gaz, Den and Ron, and everyone else who knows me.’ Piss off.

I never quite got the love for Ken Bruce and all the weeping and wailing when he left.
Popmaster is well past its sell by date but the TV version is beyond dire.

ticketwoes · 01/02/2026 11:02

To be fair, Romesh does have a genuine interest and knowledge of music. It’s certainly not the type of music you’d find on radio 2 on a Saturday morning though.
I’m a big fan of Romesh in general though, and don’t find him egotistical or boring.

Rylan is ok, not a fan of Liza Tarbuck so I don’t tend to tune in when she’s on. The rest only only catch intermittently when I’ve left the radio on for the dog and not turned it off when I get home.

NotAnotherScarf · 01/02/2026 11:15

I find it strange that radio 2 gives shows to people like Vernon Kay and RR and even Jeremy Vine who aren't known for radio but for their personality. I know that radio 2 is completely computer playlist controlled, but I want a DJ who interacts with the music as well as talking about whatever. Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio is a pain for that.

Plus how on earth is it Zoe Ball still in a job, she is self indulgence and dull. Sadly, Sarah Cox is going down that route.

If you want to contrast my first paragraph with people who do interact look at Ryland and Tarbuck! Both personalities before getting the gig, but play music they like

YourWinter · 01/02/2026 11:19

I can’t stand RR, I find him both boring and irritating. Other stations are available, I like our local BBC for weekend mornings and weekday afternoons, Boom Radio if I’m at home (can’t get digital radio in my car).

I think Sally Traffic is fun interacting with Dermot and with Rylan.

JamesClyman · 01/02/2026 11:23

Radio 2 stopped being a music station years ago. Presumably inane "chat" is cheaper than paying performance rights fees.

LadyLucksalot · 01/02/2026 11:24

Oh Radio 2 - how has it come to this? Dumbed down, mindless drivel broadcasted with expecation that we'll gratefully lap it all up, unthinkingly.

I remember when it was a joy to listen to - articulate, engaging presenters who had the perfect balance of entertaining while playing well-chosen tracks. Now it seems as though we're having stuff thrown at us, being barked at by self-absorbed names who are too wrapped up with their own irritating private in-jokes to care about the whole point of the intimacy of radio.

Terry Wogan was such a beacon. If you ever had the pleasure of listening to him, nothing comes close.

ExtraOnions · 01/02/2026 11:27

The “DJs” don’t even chose the music, the production team do it, and press all the buttons … some of these “DJs” are being paid extraordinary amounts for doing very little

I find it strange that you haven't noticed Zoe Ball no longer has a show on Radio 2 and Frank Skinner hasn't had a show on Absolute Radio for two years.

TheAutumnCrow · 01/02/2026 11:29

Terry Wogan in Wimbledon week, late 1970s: ‘I’ve been watching so much tennis I’m getting Gerulaitis in my Goolagongs’. Happy days.

RedRec · 01/02/2026 11:43

There are some on Radio 2 that really know their stuff, musically:
Tony Blackburn, Trevor Nelson, Jo Whiley, Bob Harris. And Dermot is shit-hot on all things indie.
Apart from that it is mostly a load of Bolton-centric shite. With each of them (Paddy McGuinness, Sara Cox, Vernon Kay) trying to out-Bolton each other. Paddy the worst offender by far.
I do actually like Jeremy Vine. He is funny, and his knowingly weird topics of conversation make me smile.
Pps upthread mentioned Robert Elms. I lived in London many years ago and love, loved his show. So interesting and knowledgeable about all things London. I miss him, now living in the north.

bananamilkshake123 · 01/02/2026 11:53

It's terrible at the weekend. Not always great during the day! The only DJs who listen to callers and properly converse with them are Sara Cox, Michelle Visage and Trevor Nelson.

Don't get me started on VK. The man looks like the sort who would have got his nasties out on chat roulette!

MrTwisterHasABlister · 01/02/2026 11:54

@RedRec listen to Robert on a smart speaker / BBC Sounds.

He only does Fri to Sun now but still brilliant. Currently listening!

RedRec · 01/02/2026 11:55

Meant to add in my previous post that I quite like Sally Traffic (but not Romesh, so much). She has been with quite a few presenters on that Saturday morning show and has been warm and engaging and funny with them all. Was best paired with Claudia. They really seemed to enjoy working together and bounced off each other very well. Both naturally funny.

RedRec · 01/02/2026 11:58

Oh that is great, thank you! Thought about him only recently and meant to look him up but never got round to it.
That will improve my weekend listening no end.

CoastalCalm · 01/02/2026 11:58

Thought Rylan and Sally interaction was very off yesterday - he was really rude towards her and generally seemed snarky

OllyBJolly · 01/02/2026 12:07

RampantIvy · 31/01/2026 22:31

I loved the rapport between Sally traffic and Johnnie Walker when he used to do the drivetime show.

I tend not to have the radio on at the weekend but I was listening to it I'm the car today and had a few laugh out loud moments this morning, especially when they were talking about made up rapper names and band names.

I do miss Johnny Walker. He had that unique talent of combining interesting facts and commentary with a calm engaging voice. Most other presenters just chat rubbish and sound so frenetic. I'm almost exclusively R4 now (The Archers, GQT and the odd play).

I used to listen to the radio for hours a day. I miss that.

he only played about a third of it, and talked over it to tell people who it was!

BeardofHagrid · 01/02/2026 12:20

RR is not funny, he’s boring and talentless!

ginasevern · 01/02/2026 12:21

Has anyone listened to Emma Willis' new show? I didn't think it could be any worse than Zoe Ball, but it is. Her wafflings with Sally Traffic are honestly embarrassing. It sounds so awkward and cringe.

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/02/2026 12:27

I find Sally Traffic funny.

And I really like Liza’s show. The music is more interesting than your standard r2 fare and I enjoy the humour (I understand that it wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but you can’t cater for everyone all at once).
