Romesh Ranganathan show with Sally Traffic messing around and just talking all the time and not playing music? I don't want to listen to them chattering away as if there's no audience.

OP posts:

I like Scott Mills but I’m not a huge fan of his music tastes. My favourite show was Paul O’Grady. Why they replaced him with Rob Beckett is beyond me. I couldn’t listen to his show it was so bad. I can’t bear Paddy McGuinness. Its the worst show on Radio 2

Nobody has mentioned Rylan!
I love him. He seems like he’s got such a sweet, gentle nature and is hilarious. Please nobody tell me he’s horrible in real life.

I love Rylan's show, especially when he calls his mum. From what I've read, what you see is what you get IRL.

@Myblueclematis the excitement as a 70s child of listening to Radio Luxembourg under the blankets and hoping my mother wouldn't hear! Happy days.

Paul O'Grady was brilliant. It was interesting reading Malcolm Prince's book about how Radio 2 treated him.

I really really can't stand Scott Mills. He can make even the most fascinating interviewee sound as dull as him.

Lobbygobbler · 01/02/2026 09:04

Yes love Rylan. Listening him to him is like spending time with a friend.

tescofishcakes · 01/02/2026 09:08

I hate radio 2 now too. I have actually gone back to radio 1, which at the grand old age of 50 I’m surprised about but I prefer the music, and the djs are quite funny. I’m fed up with the dreadful people they get on radio 2, especially the stand ins (Tina dehealy? Sorry have no idea how to spell her surname) is SO bad, and also Anita Rani. They know nothing about music at all and can’t interview people. At least on radio 1 the djs love music and chat about what they’re playing. I hate the way radio 2 uses Tv presenters- it’s not the same thing at all. Does anyone remember when they had Davina McCall on for a bit? What a shitshow - she was astoundingly awful on radio.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/02/2026 09:09

The bits with sally traffic are really infuriating. Him laughing hysterically at her pretending to be clueless. Really annoying.

ExtraOnions · 01/02/2026 09:13

Rylan is nice IRL if that helps.

I no longer listen to Radio 2, they seem to think being a Stand-Up, or doing a bit of presenting in the TV, makes you a good DJ, and it doesn’t. You want people who know music, who are interested in music, who tell you things you didn’t know about the artist. The current crop are just interested in telling you about themselves, in the least funny & engaging way possible.

No wonder the ratings are continually dropping. Sometimes I think the BBC does it on purpose, to lose listeners, after they got in trouble for having too many listeners, and damaging commercial radio.

Saturdays are:

Dermot
Robert Elms (BBC Radio London) ❤️
Emma
Rylan
Liza ❤️

Love Sally Traffic, hate when Rylan calls his mum (but enjoy the rest of the show), adore Robert Elms and think he’s one of the best broadcasters on radio. Liza T plays incredible music and I love her style of presenting too.

Lambington · 01/02/2026 09:19

Is her surname really "Traffic"? Seems a bit dehumanising if not...

Whatwouldnanado · 01/02/2026 09:19

I was thinking exactly the same yesterday. Too full their own importance. I (am old and) miss Terry Wogan, and Ken Bruce. Sara Cox is ok.

DeftWasp · 01/02/2026 09:21

Myblueclematis · 01/02/2026 08:46

I remember the days of the real DJs, 60s-70s as the best for loads more music and virtually no chat. Radio Caroline and Radio Luxemburg were the best radio stations if you could pick them up on your transistor radio. Never heard them droning on about their families, their hobbies or opinions. 🙄

Showing my age here 😆

Tony Blackburn is still doing that on R2, very quick link (usually one of his awful jokes) between songs.

TroysMammy · 01/02/2026 09:21

I have a short journey to work in the car (10 minutes) and it coincides with Scott Mills' easiest quiz of the week. I used to enjoy answering the questions but the inane chat with the contestants which is getting longer and longer now means the quiz hasn't started by the time I arrive at work. I turn it off now as I can't bear listening to their drivel.

I don't listen to Romesh and I can't switch off Michelle Visage quick enough.

Terry did chatter away a lot, but he had the gift of being truly entertaining.

Terry’s chat wasn’t all about himself, the listeners (TOGS), were a key part of the show.

Hotafternoon · 31/01/2026 22:09

Vernon is starting to grate now, far too much shrieking, giggling and waffling on with Janice/Janine.

Zip it! I listen for the music not your inane yakking.

Totally agree.

the Janice/Janine really isn’t funny

RaraRachael · 01/02/2026 09:25

Long ago being a DJ was a thing. As a PP said, they had a great knowledge of music so could carry out insightful interviews using that knowledge.

Now it's comedians and TV presenters who haven't a clue about decent music.

I'm just waiting for Michael McIntyre to get a show - then you won't see me for dust.

Ah, yes, Kid Jensen, Emperor Rosko!

That was back when the BBC had their stupid broadcasting monopoly over the airwaves.

I was just a little kid but I remember them - and the twiddling of the dial at night on my cheap old transistor radio under the covers.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 01/02/2026 09:28

I think Rylan is a natural & I like Michael Ball on Sunday Lovesongs, although he can be a tad schmalzy. Sarah Cox is great. I don’t know what it is about him but I really can’t be doing with OJ Borg. When Richie Anderson covered a show, I actually thought he was pretty good. Can’t listen to RR & his show is 3 hours! Gary Davis is good but he shouts!

SleepingisanArt · 01/02/2026 09:29

I feel they are trying to be like Steve Wright and his possie (sp?). Back in the 80s it was a really new, amusing thing to hear on Radio 1. Loved his show as a teenager. It worked on Radio 2 because those of us who grew up with him followed him across. But he's no longer with us and so we get a not very funny comedian and a travel announcer (who isn't very good at her job).

Edited

I've been a loyal listener of Robert Elms on Radio London for over 20 years.

But I wish he'd stop shoehorning endless brags about his penthouse Barbican flat into his shows.

Aweekoffwork · 01/02/2026 09:40

Sara Cox - great

Rylan (especially when talking with his mum) - great

Trevor Nelson - great (coz of the music)

Scott Mills - dreadful taste in music (cheesy, naff shit)

Vernon - bearable

Jane143 · 01/02/2026 09:42

What about Rylan though? I love him and his music and his calls to his Mum. He’s a real feel good sort of presenter

Totally agree. He's very natural and genuine. He does great interviews as he comes across as caring about the people he's talking to.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 01/02/2026 09:49

@twilightcafe 😅 he definitely does like to tell us and all his guests!

But I think he is so marvellous that I can just about forgive him.

Hotafternoon · 01/02/2026 09:52

Tony Prince, Dave Cash, the list of real DJs goes on.

TheAutumnCrow · 01/02/2026 09:54

I was at the dentist having a horrible filling replacement done, so was trapped in The Chair. They had Greatest Hits Radio on; it was that pop master quiz by Ken Bruce that he’s so territorial about, where listeners ring in (which in itself needs banning) and have to, for example, name three hits by The Nolans. I was forced to listen to the whole stultifying thing. And the dentist, whose hand was in my mouth, was joining in.

‘And a big hello to Gaz, Den and Ron, and everyone else who knows me.’ Piss off.
