Guardian is running a live feed, and a good unbiased source is Agenda Free TV on YouTube also running live feeds from the streets there.

Obviously multiple versions of events being thrown about as it's very fresh.

Sending solidarity across the pond to any US Mumsnetters in the locale and protesting the awful actions of ICE and disregard of your constitution by the "President".

"Rigging an election to ensure that Vance (or some other ally) is installed as his successor is no better."

Would he even need to rig the elections for Vance to win?

In the UK we voted in Boris Johnson and he and his advisers, who set about trying to dismantle the civil service and exploit parliamentary norms which had few checks and balances other than the prime minister adhering to " honourable" norms. I despaired at the chaos but ultimately his government collapsed, leading to chaotic government for a few years.

Trump's administration will not endure. Now you can say they are doing this, ignoring that etc. In the long term this will work against them.

We do not have the long term. People are dying now.

Oh god yes... of course.... if only we hadn't gone to war against Hitler - I'm sure he would have behaved like a good boy in the end And self regulated.

The gestapo were just so misunderstood!

Because you have too many people telling them them to open their eyes and take their fingers out of their ears then start to use their brains or that they are all " despicable"

The elections in the US already were rigged in favour of the Republicans

The Electoral College and the Senate give disproportionate representation to red states.
Gerrymandering affects the composition of the House.
Voter suppression in urban areas and other places populated by minorities in states like Texas.
Electronic voting machines are being tampered with in swing states like Pennsylvania.
Unlimited campaign financing (Citizens United) means that elections get bought by billionaires via shell companies.

Those representatives (mostly Republican, with a few Democrat Quislings) who have done anything to put Trump in power, keep him in power, and allow him to terrorise the people are indeed despicable. Starting with Mitch McConnell who stopped him getting convicted when he was first impeached.

Sadly, I do believe you’re right.

Sorry, but your reply doesn't engage in the actual issue.

Could Vance win a free and fair election? Yes, but that's entirely besides the point.

Can a government rig elections? Yes.

Has Trump tried to rig an election before? Yes.

Is Trump taking steps towards attempting to rig upcoming elections? Yes.

Are ICE being deployed as part of an attempt to rig elections? Yes.

Will Trump be successful in rigging the elections? Time will tell.

But your take - seemingly "he'll be punished at the ballot box" rather spectacularly misses the point.

Generally, I think you've been failing to appreciate that the administration's use of ICE (and instructing them to rough people up) is part of a plan to subvert elections. That has long been the charge but, even if folks were unwilling to draw the connection before, Bondi's letter has removed all doubt.

There is nothing wrong with pointing out that there seems to be a lot of blindness around the antics of Trump.

I can't recall ever defending Trump? What I have consistently said is Immigration and Border Control officers have a job to do so Walz and his sidekick mayor should stop whipping up more hate and encourage the locals not to obstruct the officers.
They’ve had 2 tragedies they surely don't want more.

Yeah, just pipe down people and don't cause trouble while the state murders you.

NamefortheseThreads · 25/01/2026 23:13

Livelovebehappy · 25/01/2026 21:55

Not at all. Not suggesting ICE need extra training. But ultimately the process of removing immigrants will be progressed, so a replacement organisation will he needed. But are the residents specifically against ICE or will they still be out in force if its someone else doing the job?

They’re specifically against:

Agents who are tear-gassing them, pepper spraying them, shooting them, assaulting them, detaining children, detaining legal immigrants, detaining citizens, not allowing due process to illegal immigrants they do detain.

Hope that helps.

‘Obstructing’ apparently means standing peacefully and recording them and being shot dead as a result.

CJsGoldfish · 25/01/2026 23:43

Gloriia · 25/01/2026 17:17

Why don't other states and cities have the same problem with ICE removing those there illegally? Why is it only Minneapolis with the Gov Walz and sidekick mayor whipping up hate and unrest?

The illegal immigrant numbers are very low in Minnesota. The actions and numbers of ICEstapo are not relative to the reality. This is NOT about 'illegal immigrants'
They are the actions of a fascist kleptocracy though 🤷‍♀️

You didn’t read the question….. when ICE went in to round up illegal immigrants, there was no tear gas, there was no pepper spray. Antagonists were on the streets as soon as ICE stepped foot in Minneapolis. They’re not there to protest anything other than stop illegal immigrants from being removed. Does that help you comprehend the point I’m making….? Hope so, because it’s tedious having to repeat myself. Of course what’s happened since plays into their agenda.

Edited

Yeah, that was me. I don't seem to recall saying anyone was despicable, but when I see people defending the people who committed state sanctioned murder in broad daylight, it seems to be a fitting word.

@Walkden You're twisting the debate.

You said that it was condescending attitudes that caused people to vote for Trump. I said it was too many people closing their eyes, sticking their fingers in their ears and not using their brains. The larger point being that it was clear what he is and wanting to 'own the libs' is not the fault of the libs. Everyone owns their vote. It is akin to blaming a woman's clothing choice for her being assaulted. The blame is on the assaulter. It is not my job to pretend to respect viewpoints I don't respect to avoid leaving some snowflake with hurtie feelings in the voting booth. The fact is that people turned out and voted against their own interests for their own reasons. If this was not the case, Trump's popularity wouldn't be plummeting down to somewhere around 34% right now. He's done that all on his own.

You then blamed the Democrats for putting up Biden as a candidate. I'm not going to argue he was a good candidate. To be honest, I think he was a pretty good president, but he wasn't my first choice in any election. But it wasn't Biden. It was a not stellar but perfectly good, capable woman with an impressive resume. If someone's choice over her was an adjudicated sexual assaulter, tax fraud who's banned from running a charity, who incited a riot, and was convicted of 34 felonies who raved about Arnold Palmer's dick, called dead soldiers suckers and losers, made fun of a disabled reporter, and ranted about Haitians eating cats and dogs, that's fucking on them and no one else.

I also don't think you really understand much about the American system of government and how different it is from the UK and how many of the structures of democracy have been torn down.

They were ready for ICE as they had seen how they had behaved in other areas. Asking to see the papers of anyone who wasn’t white and detaining immigrants who were here illegally.
They have a playbook which they are following in each area they are going into, which includes entering people’s homes without a warrant.

The irony. When the Republicans were accusing the Democrats of rigging the voting machines when Biden got in, apparently Trump was unhinged - it was impossible to rig the machines in anyone’s favour. He was lying. Yet here we are accusing the Republicans of doing the very same thing that was dismissed when it was flipped in the 2016 election.

You dont think illegal immigrants should be returned? Guessing you favour open borders then. And I can't see that ending well for the Americans when they have to accommodate millions of people flooding in and swamping their infrastructure.

Shame on you.

Shame.

The alternative to open borders isn’t state-sanctioned execution of protestors, kidnapping of children, and taking citizens off the streets because they’re brown or speaking Spanish.

you’re a fucking embarrassment. I hope you’re a bot.

More likely that the Mayor in Minneapolis refused to co-operate with the due process and was in fact encouraging protests and confrontation. This hasnt been a thing in other states and cities, where there has been co-operation. Some incidences with ICE, but not nearly as many which is occurring in Minneapolis. That could be down to ICE having no protection or co-operation from the Mayor, which is creating a very hostile and dangerous environment for them to do their job. Not saying ICE are blameless, but the city’s leaders need to get a grip.

Are you trying to convince yourself with this shit or are you trying to convince everyone else?

You can pretend that you believe what you're saying if it makes you feel better, but you're certainly not kidding anyone else. We have watched the videos and we have heard what people in the administration are saying. The attempts to gaslight are pointless.

I don't know about the claims about electronic voting machines being tampered with, but all the rest are factual, structural issues in the US electoral system that give exaggerated and disproportionate weight to red states. There is a lot of very serious reporting and literature on this. I'd recommend a bit of reading.

It's an entirely different thing from deluded ranting that Ceasar Chavez rigged voting machines from beyond the grave. You might note that Fox Corp paid Dominion Voting Systems 787 million to settle the claims agains them for falsely alleging that the election was fraudulent.
