Guardian is running a live feed, and a good unbiased source is Agenda Free TV on YouTube also running live feeds from the streets there.

Obviously multiple versions of events being thrown about as it's very fresh.

Sending solidarity across the pond to any US Mumsnetters in the locale and protesting the awful actions of ICE and disregard of your constitution by the "President".

"I’m sure his defenders "- ,

As I posted earlier "Trump is fickle, unhinged and rambling" that's hardly defending him

You really think this man is capable of bringing down American democracy? 😂

I think the people he’s a figurehead for certainly are.

Are you familiar with Project 25?

Gloriia · 25/01/2026 21:53

Aethelredtheunsteady · 25/01/2026 21:43

Direct from Trump’s truth social. This is what he’s posting about while his country reels from watching an innocent citizen murdered by law enforcement.

I’m sure his defenders - @RingoJuice, @Walkden, @Gloriia etc will be happy to explain why we’re wrong to think this is completely ludicrous leadership.

I can't recall ever defending Trump? What I have consistently said is Immigration and Border Control officers have a job to do so Walz and his sidekick mayor should stop whipping up more hate and encourage the locals not to obstruct the officers.
They’ve had 2 tragedies they surely don't want more.

That’s like saying the Gestapo just needed a little extra training and if nobody had resisted them, everything would’ve been just fine.

Not at all. Not suggesting ICE need extra training. But ultimately the process of removing immigrants will be progressed, so a replacement organisation will he needed. But are the residents specifically against ICE or will they still be out in force if its someone else doing the job?

expatme · 25/01/2026 21:58

Hey @Gloriia Are you ready to talk about the very real photo you confidently asserted had been debunked?

They object in principal to the removal of illegal migrants in principle. Anyone doing the job is a problem

"No, but it requires opening your eyes, taking your fingers out of your ears and using your brain"

As I've also previously posted this kind of condescension towards anyone with a different viewpoint is what got trump elected / lost Kamala the election.

20thCenturyFecks · 25/01/2026 13:05

It still does not make it right for ICE to lift children without their parents, shoot unarmed women in cars, pepper spray peaceful (ie unarmed) protestors and shoot unarmed men who are already in the prone position.

And don't even try to justify that behaviour. It's unjustifiable and well you know it.

Oh no not @RingoJuice again - crawling out from under their MAGA red hat to derail a British site and ... somehow not being able to see WITH THEIR OWN TWO EYES murder happening on the streets of their own country by their gestapo.

DdraigGoch · 25/01/2026 22:07

Livelovebehappy · 25/01/2026 21:25

You didn’t suggest that an alternative be put in place, just that the citizens there should be left alone to get on with their lives. There were protests there as soon as ICE stepped foot in Minneapolis, so the protests were down to the fact that the process of removing illegal immigrants was happening at all, regardless of who was doing it. Obviously recent situations have put the focus on ICE, but I think the crux is the removal of illegal of immigrants, not about which organisation does it.

More lies. There would have been no protests if ICE had complied with the law from the beginning. Using warrants. Not profiling. Only detaining actual illegal immigrants. Only using reasonable and proportionate force. Not dressing like the provisional IRA to conceal their identities. Allowing people to contact their families and their lawyer.

ICE and CBP are compromised beyond all possible redemption. The only way forward is to abolish the present system and have a fresh start.

Ah, the she was asking for it because she wore a short skirt theory of politics.

No. He won because too many people had their eyes closed, their fingers in their ears and didn't use their brains.

You're welcome.

"How anyone honest-minded could accuse people of being "hysterical" for perceiving a threat to democracy in these circumstances is beyond me."

Perhaps because according to many posters on here ice are already equivalent to the brown shirts and/ or Gestapo and the level of threat is being exaggerated out of all proportion.

People are acting like American democracy is at imminent risk of collapse / morphing into some dystopian nazi state. I'm not even American and have more confidence in the resilience of the US constitution/ democratic system.

People are entitled to their beliefs and welcome to protest. Go out and wave signs warning of "the death of American democracy Rip - could not survive trump." When it doesn't happen people can tell themselves posting on Mumsnet stopped it happening I guess...

When and if he tries to get a third term ot grant emergency powers etc I might be concerned - but I just don't believe that will happen

I'm currently reading "They thought they were free: The Germans 1933-1945", first published by the University of Chicago Press in 1955. The danger signs are there, and I'd prefer that tyranny was headed off from the beginning rather than allow things to escalate.

How many people look back and say "why didn't the Germans do something"? We're now at the point where Americans must either do something or be judged by history.

I firmly believe that US democracy is at imminent risk of collapse.

Again - Trump already tried to overturn one election. We cannot say if democracy would indeed have collapsed if Pence has acquiesce to Trump's demands, but it would have been very much within the realms of possibility.

What's changed since then? 2 things:

  • Trump has stuffed his administration and various government departments with election deniers (a screening question used in interviews was "who won the 2020 election?" The "correct" answer, of course, being the false one.

  • Trump has greater incentive to remain in power. In 2020, he just didn't want to cede power. When he lost, he was subject to various criminal investigations (including those around the attempt to overturn the election). While he (or another Republican) remains in office, he is not in any legal jeopardy.

You seem to think that only a third Trump term would mean democracy has collapsed, but that's not so. Rigging an election to ensure that Vance (or some other ally) is installed as his successor is no better.

It's a little premature to call American democracy dead, but when an election denier holds office, has installed loyalists (also election deniers) into every key position, and is using the threat of violence to coerce swing states into ceding control of election infrastructure (all while Trump makes little "jokes" about canceling elections), warning sirens are absolutely blaring.

A reminder, too, that the administration has made overt that it is prepared to disregard the courts.

Is there sometimes a degree of hyperbole in posters' comments - possibly - but it isn't hysteria. The threat is very real and extremely present, and the complacency demonstrated in your posts - seemingly not grounded in anything other than "I just don't see it" - isn't level headedness.

From what I saw though he didn’t do any of that before firing.

he removed the gun from Alex, has it pointed down by his side as he walks off and the gun fires. Unless he’s inspecting chambers, removing magazines and whatnot in the middle of that melee which not only seems unlikely but bloody dangerous.

i know fuck all about guns but surely you take it somewhere away from a load of people fighting first? Then do your safety checks?

like I said, I know nothing about guns but saw a comment which said that type of gun it would be an intentional firing? As it didn’t go off by accident. If so, again it begs the question if he fired it to make it safe why do it so close to this incident, when it’s likely to trigger return fire from a bunch of armed ice.

The chap in the grey jacket removed the victims gun. After he did it another officer in green pulled out his pistol, fired one shot, paused fired three more shots, paused and fired 5 or 6 more shots.

Standard practice is to do what is called a double tap. Identify the target, fire two quick shots and then evaluate the situation. He didn’t do that.

I think he fired the first shot , paused, saw the victim was moving and fired the three shots. Paused again, I think to allow one colleague to move away and then fired the rest of the shots. Assuming he had the glock 19 pistol then he fired 10 of his 15 rounds.

it breaks a few rules.

  1. Conservation of ammunition. You use the minimum ammunition required because you never know when you’re going to need the wasted rounds
  2. He fired in the direction of colleagues.

It wasn’t what I’d call a professional way for a well trained officer should act. I appreciate that the stress of the moment makes people act in unexpected ways but in the heat of the moment, training should kick in.

The reality is it was murder. I think he has waited all his career to do something like that. One of the officers shouted gun to warn the others and he saw his chance.

With any luck, the enormity of his actions has dawned on him and he will replay that moment in his mind until his dying day.

One other image sticks with me. After he stopped firing, another officer a few feet away who had not been involved directly clapped in celebration. I hope his balls turn square and go septic I the corners.

Again - if ICE's job in Minneapolis is to enforce immigration laws, then why is Minesotta handing over voter registration information one of the conditions put forth by the administration for withdrawing ICE from the city?

"Rigging an election to ensure that Vance (or some other ally) is installed as his successor is no better."

Would he even need to rig the elections for Vance to win?

In the UK we voted in Boris Johnson and he and his advisers, who set about trying to dismantle the civil service and exploit parliamentary norms which had few checks and balances other than the prime minister adhering to " honourable" norms. I despaired at the chaos but ultimately his government collapsed, leading to chaotic government for a few years.

Trump's administration will not endure. Now you can say they are doing this, ignoring that etc. In the long term this will work against them.

The Democrats are ready. It would just take 16 Republicans to vote with them to stop ICE.

Just 23 to impeach and remove him.

That’s all. We don’t have even 16 Republicans with the conscience or backbone to do it.

From Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter yesterday:

‘All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dem[ocrat]s to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump—3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.’
