In tears in the restaurant bathroom.. TW: Periods

I know this is probably stupid but here goes.

come out this afternoon for a really special celebratory meal with my DH and his family.

I am currently on my period, however when I woke up this morning I woke up in a pool of blood. My underwear, pyjamas, bed linen - all of it was ruined. I’m sorry this is probably TMI. I didn’t have much pain, just surprised me.

Anyway - I am currently in said restaurant and I’m really struggling. My stomach is cramping beyond belief, literally one wave after the other and I can feel ‘gushes’ (I’m sorry Blush)

I excused myself to come to the bathroom and literally cannot get off the toilet. I’ve been in here over half an hour and have text. DH to please explain to his parents I’m not feeling well.

My stomach is literally agony and I feel like I could pass out from the waves of cramps. Literally one after the other and the bleeding has gotten really heavy again.

I am on the implant so whilst I do get ‘periods’ they can sometimes be irregular / I skip them.

I am sorry this is probably TMI but I’m in so much pain I’m just doubled over and can barely move. I don’t know if this is normal or not. 😩

is this usually your experience of your period?

YourZippyHare · 24/01/2026 11:54

Has this happened before? It sounds quite concerning, if it's gushing out and out and doesn't really stop. How many pads/tampons have you had to use today?

hahagogomomo · 24/01/2026 11:55

Are you anywhere near a supermarket or boots? Nip out and buy maxi incontinence pads, they are really absorbent so give confidence and take ibroprofen (double dose). I switched to Lidl brand incontinence pads years ago and never have had a leak

MidWayThruJanuary · 24/01/2026 11:58

Can you ask your husband to bring you home?
And I really don’t think that the mention of periods needs a trigger warning. They are a perfectly normal bodily function!

I agree. Could you possibly give 111 a call? I know being trapped in the toilet must be horrible, so sending you an unmumsnetty hug.

Newsenmum · 24/01/2026 12:00

Id be quite concerned op. Any chance you think youre having a miscarriage? This sounds awful. Can someone come in and help? I wouldnt use a tampon.

mygodd · 24/01/2026 12:00

Thanks everyone. I just didn’t want to upset anyone if they click into the post and didn’t expect me to be talking about blood.

I have been through around a tampon an hour since this morning. But I didn’t have any kind of pain this morning.

Now I have constant cramping.

Going to ask my DH to go out to grab me some paracetamol & pads. I just feel bad for ruining the meal.

Youre ill! Do you think anyone else would feel bad? Please look after yourself.

mygodd · 24/01/2026 12:01

I had first thought miscarriage too but I don’t think it’s possible. We are very careful and double up on protection plus my implant.

Of course I can never say never.

Is this usually how your periods are? If not I would suggest calling 111 for advice, but firstly ask DH to come to the toilet after explaining to staff that you are having a medical problem (or send in mil?) first things first you need to get out of the toilets and to the car. Can you double up on pads to make it out of the restaurant?

Again…. Has that happened before?

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 24/01/2026 12:04

Depending on whose celebration it it, it could be repeated or you and your husband can be excused. Imagine if anyone else on that table was suffering as you are - would you want them to suffer in silence and feel guilty, or would you want them to look after themselves however they needed?

mygodd · 24/01/2026 12:05

@OneNeatCatSorry - no, I’ve never had any period as painful and heavy as this. I do suffer with period cramps but this is next level.

I think I'd be inclined to take some painkillers, get home and get a hot water bottle and try to rest. Make a GP appointment on Monday if it continues, unless you find the painkillers do nothing and you're losing a lot of blood.

I recently had a period that sent me to hospital thinking maybe it was gallstones or an appendix issues because I had never had pain like it and it was so sudden and intense it woke me up in the night and I literally couldn't get comfortable or move for hours. I was sent home with NFA but will need to see if it happens again. Contrary, my friend had similar and she was admitted and they got to the bottom of it, so listen to your body. It's not normal for you.

MidWayThruJanuary · 24/01/2026 12:06

I think you need to get home as soon as you can.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 24/01/2026 12:06

You could perhaps do a pregnancy test as your HCG levels would still be elevated even if you’re having a miscarriage now.

MrsPinkSky · 24/01/2026 12:07

What has your DH said in reply to your text?

Are you in the UK if you've come out in the afternoon but been in the toilet since 11.20am?

I only ask because it might affect any advice given.

AllIdoistidyup · 24/01/2026 12:07

I would go home, sit in a bath and call 111 or similar non-emergency number. Pregnancy test is not a bad shout.

jamandcustard · 24/01/2026 12:08

I think you need to go to A&E. This isn't normal OP. You need to get some help.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/01/2026 12:08

Could you be having a miscarriage? That’s just what mine felt like.

BeeHive909 · 24/01/2026 12:13

I’m sorry but if you can’t get off the toliet due to pain I’d be asking for an ambulance to be called to check you over. This isn’t normal and isn’t normal for you. If you’re losing this amount of blood it definitely needs checking and I say that as someone with both pcos and endo.

spiderlight · 24/01/2026 12:13

My first thought was miscarriage too - it sounds exactly like mine was. You poor thing. Please ask your husband to whisk you off home so you can get the care you need.

pteromum · 24/01/2026 12:13

I think you need to call 111 from where you are and follow the advice. It sounds very much like a miscarriage.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 24/01/2026 12:14

You need to go to hospital. That doesn’t sound normal at all. Don’t worry about the meal.

AliTheMinx · 24/01/2026 12:16

It sounds like the symptoms I experienced during my miscarriages. Please seek urgent help, OP. Sending a hug xx
