Help us solve a family debate!! If you don’t serve chips what is the best side dish for a quiche?

Chips and salad and coleslaw.

mugglewump · 23/01/2026 20:04

Salad. Lots of different kinds and lots of it. I don't get this idea ofaccompanying carbs with carbs.

https://www.lavenderandlovage.com/2023/08/school-dinner-cheese-flan.html is the recipe I use if you wanted to try it!

Note the picture....with beans and chips!

Oh I love Lavender and Lovage, Ive got her cookbook

That is phenomenal

Quiche always gets served with salad here.

BettyRizzoSlaps · 23/01/2026 20:11

Cold quiche. Hot beans. There is only one way!

So I’m not alone with the chips - glad it’s not just me! I like the idea of adding beans too! I never thought of serving with salad or coleslaw as I see it more as a pie, rather than a salad food.

It's just a pie without a lid. If you put a lid on it there'd be fewer people horrified at the thought of having it with chips or mash, and beans. But as pp said up North we do like hearty food (carbs).

Nope, baked beans and chips here. Im northern though I think the food is heartier up north.

This is true. My DH is from Newcastle and definitely has s different palate than me (Irish)

Gala pie

If quiche is hot, then some form of potato and vegetables.

If quiche is cold, a hunk of crusty bread and butter and something salady.

Basically treat it as your protein on the plate. But never salad with hot food. I can’t bear it!

Don’t you have a salad with jacket potato?

Mash and beans

With quiche?!

I'd go for potato salad, other bits of salad and maybe some (crusty) bread.

Or chips.

floppybit · 23/01/2026 20:36

I always serve quiche with chips and salad.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 23/01/2026 20:53

Salad, coleslaw and pickles

I weirdly don't like the hot cold combo of the quiche and chips (love most hot cold combos though) and hot quiche is rank😂

DuchessofStaffordshire · 23/01/2026 20:53

Salad. I'm not one for double carbing, I don't get it. Chip butties, pie and mash, pizza and dough balls. A mystery.

Mash and beans

With a quiche?

German hot butter and herb potato salad with a green salad, mustard vinegarette...... quiche it is for tomorrow then 😂 I wouldn't have chips but I wouldn't judge if I saw it on the plate.

My uncle's German mother used to make this potato salad it's amazing!

ChewbaccasMrs · 23/01/2026 20:58

Chips and beans whilst the weather is rubbish and then when it's sunny again it will be salad and jersey royals or a baked potato with coleslaw.

What do you eat with a pie if not mash, chips or at a push new potatoes?! Please don't tell me just veg because the pastry is enough , what will there be to soak up the gravy 😢

“Just take the cunting Quiche, Patricia!” IYKYK

GrethaGreen · 23/01/2026 21:00

i have just eaten my dinner. It was quiche with the potato salad. I also eat quiche with peas.

Cel77 · 23/01/2026 21:01

A salad! A quiche is rich enough. You need something light and fresh to balance the dish.

Chips!

Or sautéed potatoes.

Or fresh bread and butter.

You need a carb with it!

henlake7 · 23/01/2026 21:12

I feel like it has to be salad....but also I now really fancy quiche with a giant pile of chips.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/01/2026 21:13

Going by our nearest theatre, who I suspect had a chef trained in the cafeteria of BHS or Littlewoods, the rule is

Chips and baked beans for men

Salad (shredded Iceberg lettuce, two slices of a snooker ball tomato and three of cucumber), sachet of salad cream and 3 boiled new potatoes for women or, if they can't manage that, hold the tomato and cucumber, an extra scoop of Iceberg and a third of a packet of Salt n Shake, hold the shake and make the salad cream sachet the star of the plate.

Lauralou19 · 23/01/2026 21:29

Salad, coleslaw, potato salad or jacket potato. I also like quiche and baked beans but maybe that’s just me 🤣
