Cost of husband’s 40th party

Posting here for traffic.
I am organising a surprise party for my husband’s 40th. He is the kind who loves being centre of attention and would love the surprise! I have never ever organised a proper event like this so have no idea of average cost and your input would be appreciated. I’m looking to cater his favourite Turkish food, inflatable night club in the garden, alcohol, cake, nibbles, and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids. Does that sound average or a lot?

OP posts:

I am glad you are not my neighbour as it seems it will be a noisy event. That would drive me mad OP.I hope it goes well and that you finish at a reasonable hour. Please remember your neighbours might be nurses/doctors who need their sleep. I wouldn't like to go to a mobile nightclub myself and I would be concerned with upsetting neighbours. Would you be able to book an indoor venue?

People are allowed to have a good time in their own home every once in a while.

Unclench.

I bet you do plenty that annoys people.

I didn’t mean to come across entitled. I do acknowledge we are in a privileged position

Don't give this poster a second thought, if you can afford it thats your business and no one else's.

Oh my goodness. MN certainly highlights the them and us culture doesn't it?

I can't even envisage a world where spending this much on a 40th birthday would be considered normal.

Entitlement and privilege springs to mind.

That’s very unkind! Just because you can’t afford it, you need to understand people will be able to afford more than you and you afford more than others.

But do you think k it’s a reasonable cost, that was the question?

Definitely!

BlanketyBlankBlank · 22/01/2026 19:02

Sounds great fun, price seems about right, googled inflatable discos, great!

I’m very interested in the Turkish caterers, do they cook at your house? Or transport it and what’s on the menu @naavaaira

I hope it’s not February 10th because on that day

Monday February 10th 1986 I came home from school to discover my mum had read my diary! 😮

Believe me OP you did not want to be me that evening !!!!!! The trauma!!!!!

😵‍💫

So no one should ever do ANYTHING in case their neighbours do shift work on the weekend? It’s one night and I’m sure she’s not planning that they blast music until 3am. People have parties and manage not to become the scourge of the neighbourhood you know.

It’s a grand. Get a grip. What a very bitter response. Them and us? I’d say the majority of people can spend £50 a head on a 40th birthday.

hahagogomomo · 22/01/2026 19:11

Depends on your catering supplier and whatever an inflatable night club is. Certainly can do a house party for a lot less but catering doesn’t come cheap

Pantalone · 22/01/2026 19:12

Inflatable nightclub looks like the sort of thing they use in Guantanamo when someone won’t talk 😂

It wasn't meant to be " unkind".
It's stating a fact.
And tbh you are assuming I " can't afford it".
Actually my stance is no one and no birthday deserves spending that amount of money on. In my world showing affection and caring isn't about spending large amounts of money.

Great. I hope someone pops along to give you a cheap medal for understanding true and real love unlike the rest of us.

Yeah OP what on earth are you thinking? Cancel that flipping wonderful sounding nightclub, a few garden chairs and pass the parcel with them onion bharjis in a bit of foil, you'll be right - heating and entertainment in one package! Or find the teens diary for Feb 10th entries for added fun.

Enjoy your party 🥳

You’re the one turning it into a ‘them and us’ scenario and being very divisive about it. A lot of people could afford to spend more than I can on things. Why would I begrudge them for it or make it so divisive?

I think in most people’s world showing care and affection doesn’t involve spending money. Spending money and caring isn’t mutually exclusive.

Sorry what is it you are actually saying here?
My point is if you care about someone there is no need to throw money at them. What is yours? It sounds as though though you think spending a lot of money on someone is the only way to show you "love" them".

Why even bother with the bhajis? Most people would be happy with half a raw onion. It’s all about the loving and caring, not the gram flour, spices and hot oil!!

My 50th was about £3k. I had a marquee and hired tables chairs and cutlery / crockery. I had it all catered by an excellent caterer and provided all the drink, there was no way I expected people to bring drink (a they didnt). Was for 30 people. I think it’s a good price

user1473878824 · 22/01/2026 19:24

OP I think you’ve got a great deal and it sounds like a fantastic party. I hope you have a great time

Their point was very clear. And very funny.

The chip on your shoulder is probably visible from space.

Have you not heard that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

I made the point that spending the amount of money OP is talking about for a birthday, any birthday, is far beyond the norm, or budget for a lot of people.

You chose to interpret that as me being "jujgmental" and " envious" and , God forbid " boring" I think that says far more about you and your narrow minded stance that can't tolerate the fact someone has a different take on birthday celebrations than it does about me.

Why did you feel the need to jump on a thread about someone who is fine spending £1,200 on a big birthday just to lecture them? Is it because you can’t take someone having a different stance on birthdays to you? This thread isn’t about what YOU would do.

Truetoself · 22/01/2026 19:33

Thanks OP- never heard of an inflatable nightclub before!

I hate to break it to you but it's not about you at all.
