Cost of husband’s 40th party

naavaaira · 22/01/2026 16:23

Posting here for traffic.
I am organising a surprise party for my husband’s 40th. He is the kind who loves being centre of attention and would love the surprise! I have never ever organised a proper event like this so have no idea of average cost and your input would be appreciated. I’m looking to cater his favourite Turkish food, inflatable night club in the garden, alcohol, cake, nibbles, and other bits all coming to around £1200 for 16 adults and 8 kids. Does that sound average or a lot?

That’s hilarious! I can’t believe you remember the date this happened or did you then diarise that too?!

No I didn’t need to diarise it - the date has stuck in my mind for ever !

Pahaha! I second this!

Ok coming up!!! 🤣

What a bizarre response. How on earth do you think this is relevant or helpful?

Sorry I was being lighthearted - although it’s an event that really happened - didn’t mean to derail..

OP I think it’s great the effort you’re making for your DH - you sound very organised and I’m sure whatever happens.. it’ll go well 😊😊😊

wish someone had made this effort on my 40th for me .. but that’s the subject of another thread …

Bringemout · 22/01/2026 18:12

Is it going to be a bit chilly, portable heaters?

I am glad you are not my neighbour as it seems it will be a noisy event. That would drive me mad OP.I hope it goes well and that you finish at a reasonable hour. Please remember your neighbours might be nurses/doctors who need their sleep. I wouldn't like to go to a mobile nightclub myself and I would be concerned with upsetting neighbours. Would you be able to book an indoor venue?

I think everyone should be given a pass on one noisyish party a year, especially if they are typically considerate neighbours. The only time I would choose not to is if there was a new baby next door or a seriously unwell person. I’d obviously warn neighbours in advance too.

Yes we’ll have portable heaters. Just hope it doesn’t rain

Oh my goodness. MN certainly highlights the them and us culture doesn't it?

I can't even envisage a world where spending this much on a 40th birthday would be considered normal.

Entitlement and privilege springs to mind.

lilybit2025 · 22/01/2026 18:30

We've just hired a local hall and for food, decorations, DJ for my DP's 30th... it's costing me £1500 for 70 people, and I got quoted £1500 just for a venue!! So 1200 is a good deal

WeAreNotOk · 22/01/2026 17:21

Just googled inflatable nightclubs and they look fab! Smoke, lights and sound system included too. Your budget sounds spot on.
I'd love to be your neighbour, even if I just nosied over the fence and got offered a cheeky drink.
You have a lucky DH. Please let it know how it all goes and post pics! Them's the rules.

Lots of people are very intrigued with the idea of an inflatable club! I’ll let everyone know how it goes

I didn’t mean to come across entitled. I do acknowledge we are in a privileged position

Sounds fine but increase the booze budget

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 22/01/2026 18:38

Cheap! Our wedding meal, doing the food ourselves, Cremant and red and rose wine to drink, I made the cake myself for 13 people cost £1500.

Kindly, get a grip.

OP I had my 40th last year in a bar with no hire fee- about 100 guests, no food, and it cost me about double what you're spending just in drinks and decor. I think you're getting a bargain!

What a needlessly nasty post. Can you not grasp that people earn different amounts in this world, and can afford different things.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 22/01/2026 18:44

I think it sounds fantastic, and im sure everyone will have a blast. The misery guts upthread who is already sympathising with your neighbours needs to give their head a wobble.

Im off to Google inflatable night clubs.

Don't be a mean party pooper. Nothing entitled and privileged on having good budget for a party.

MsMcCoo · 22/01/2026 18:45

Op, please tell me you prebooked the food delivery already 🙈

It is really good value what you are getting for that money. Also intrigued by inflatable night club😂

Or maybe they’ve worked hard, earned their money and can afford it?
I’ll be spending a fortune on a party in September and I’ll enjoy doing so.
Them and us.
Jealous much?

Cakeandcardio · 22/01/2026 18:52

I went to a 21st with an inflatable night club. It was very good fun! Extremely bouncy 😅

RocketLollyPolly · 22/01/2026 18:54

You’ve clearly costed it properly rather than just estimating so if you can afford it, it’s fine. If you’re wanting to save on costs you could cut out the inflatable disco and just do it in the house, or have a cheaper takeaway (eg pizza order) or a supermarket cake, or ask people to bring their own booze etc. What’s your aim?
