Basically this, anyone else still get takeaway on a Friday evening after the long week? Getting a Chinese tonight. and I’m so excited.

I buy one as and when I want one, just like anything else.

"Treats" are for dogs and toddlers. I'm a grown woman. I really do think that calling food "a treat" sets up an unhelpful fetishistic relationship with it.

Meh, I call some food a treat and the only fetish I have is wanting to be lightly slapped with a leather glove, duel-style 🤷‍♀️

Nolongera · 09/01/2026 12:54

Rare for us, normally a special occasion, they aren't great value. Maybe half a dozen times a year.

crazycrofter · 09/01/2026 12:54

We used to when we lived in a big city and had loads of options available on Uber Eats delivery! We moved to the countryside three years ago - well, a very small town, which has two Indians and a Chinese, but none of them match up to the standard we'd be willing to pay for! There's a really nice Indian we've found, but it's a 20 minute drive, so we've only had it about 3 or 4 times - the inconvenience of a 45 minute round trip means I might as well cook! Plus takeaways have gone up so much in the last 3 years. And I have a subscription with Simply Cook - highly recommended and I much prefer their meals to a takeaway anyway!

I think treat foods are a way of distinguishing every day food and things that are a bit nicer. Chocolate biscuits are a treat in my house because I usually buy plain, baking a cake is a treat because I’ll usually do something like flapjacks. It’s not about fetishising food but recognising we don’t eat takeaway every night, or have cake daily. It’s something that’s nice every now and again.

We occasonally get fish and chips, but definitely not as much as once a week. I find most takeaways disappointing so I haven't bothered with anything else for years. Chinese in the UK is an abomination, but some Indian places are good.

ParisianLady · 09/01/2026 12:55

Once every few months for us, too unhealthy and actually not that tasty.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 09/01/2026 12:59

We get a chippy every 2 weeks. We wait for a special occasion to treat ourselves to a Chinese or Indian as we like to order loads of dishes so it’s quite expensive (but does do 2 meals). I’m doing low carb at the minute and quite liking it so will probably give takeaways a miss for a while.

FurForksSake · 09/01/2026 13:00

@Megifer does it need to be leather? Some people might have ethical concerns.

MagneticSquirrel · 09/01/2026 13:00

Would love to be able to have a takeaway every weekend! However just too expensive for me at £10-25 a head depending on type of takeaway and also I don’t think a full Indian curry, Chinese takeaway, take out fish and chips would do my waistline any good if weekly - I’d have to eat like a bird the rest of the week.

Jealous of people that do have a more frequent takeaway though! Good for you!

I can count on the fingers on one hand the number of times ive refused a takeaway 🤣

😂😂

No I think Id be fine with pleather depending on who's challenging me to the duel 😂

Nice treaty takeaway first, obvs 😬

HighStreetOtter · 09/01/2026 13:06

No, it’s too much hassle. I’d have to drive and pick it up. I’d rather cook. I made an amazing pad Thai last night which took me 10-15 mins. If I lived in town I might be more tempted.

FurForksSake · 09/01/2026 13:07

@Megifer But then might you release a massive garlic-scented burp when the slapping begins? I hope you’ll have a rennie before the kink.

Motheranddaughter · 09/01/2026 13:07

Take away on Friday and dinner out on Saturday

Gliblet · 09/01/2026 13:08

Takeaways are too expensive now to do weekly but we do a Saturday night 'slack off' - stuff that's pre-packaged, convenient or 'ignore in the oven for 20 minutes'. DS usually has a pizza, occasionally hot dogs. DH and I either get Indian meals and some bhaji, pizzas, or sometimes I just cook up a couple of packs of scampi and serve them on top of Lidl premade salads. Minimum faff, minimum cleanup.

If we do have a takeaway our usual is the local kebab house, everything's cooked to order (apart from doner meat obviously but none of us tend to go for that) and they're lovely.

Netcurtainnelly · 09/01/2026 13:09

No. Never do.let alone on a Friday.

Joystir59 · 09/01/2026 13:10

Cant do takeaways any more. 72 and 68. IBS her and CKD me. ----

HappilyDivorced89 · 09/01/2026 13:10

Not weekly or fortnightly... maybe once or twice a month though. Sometimes less. I'm still finding my "flow" with cooking after moving house at the end of last year!

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/01/2026 13:10

We get takeaways every now and then. Not on a regular basis as it’s just not something I think about that often. It’s nice to get one once in a while if we fancy them but don’t feel the need to make it a weekly occurrence.

it’s not really about the money, it’s sort of about health, but really, it’s just not something I factor into my weekly schedule like some do.

thenightsky · 09/01/2026 13:10

I'd love to have an Indian takeaway every Friday. If it wasn't so expensive, plus and hour's round trip to pick it up, I would. As it is, we have one on Boxing Day and birthdays and draw straws as to who will do the drive.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 09/01/2026 13:11

We used to but then the prices went up and the quality went down! Also we have small kids who we have to cook for regardless so that diminishes the appeal as we’re clearing up anyway.

We have one really good takeaway nearby but it’s expensive; we indulge every few months. Even dominoes wants almost a fiver for delivery now when their pizzas are already about the cost of a mortgage. I do miss the excitement of planning a Friday night takeaway though! Leftovers are our favourite meal.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/01/2026 13:13

We get Indian once in a blue moon for a treat, but it’s ££££ for anywhere decent. Local chippy is average, that tends to be ‘emergency tea’ (nothing in, household emergency, that kind of thing), and I’m just not a fan of pizza or Chinese and there’s not much else that will deliver. The rest of the family will have a Chinese for an occasional treat if I’m away, but by and large we’d rather have say, one meal out rather than thee takeaways at home.

TheLyricalDanceFlap · 09/01/2026 13:14

Girasoli · 09/01/2026 12:40

Not on a Friday as the kids have swimming lessons so we always eat something odd/in a rush.
DH takes DS1 to McDonalds most Sundays after his football matches as they can be spread all over the county so they don't usually get home until around 2pm.

”Quick children, eat up your noodles and custard swimming starts in ten minutes”
not what you mean at all but this is what your post made me think of!

cinquanta · 09/01/2026 13:14

No, we never had takeaway regularly but stopped altogether when DH started cooking ‘fakeaway’ meals that tasted better than actual takeaway at a fraction of the cost with no drive to go and get it.

TabbieMctatty · 09/01/2026 13:15

No because it's become rather expensive for a family of 5 and I'm trying to get us all to eat a bit better.

I do love a takeaway though and living in a large city we have our pick of options which is so tempting when youre tired!

I do still go for easier options on a Friday from the supermarket because by Fri eve I'm exhausted from working all week, juggling the kids and cooking all week! 🤣
