Basically this, anyone else still get takeaway on a Friday evening after the long week? Getting a Chinese tonight. and I’m so excited.

@GasPanic was it four figures or five? Sounds like you’ve made the most of it! I’ve been eating my selection box today, cheese yesterday… we plough on!

Low four figures. Apparently it was disgusting and an insult to the starving and destitute.

I just don't normally feel "takeaway ready" in Jan. It's a month to scale back for me.

Breadcat24 · 09/01/2026 13:35

Takeaway here is now so expensive- you are looking at £30+
We are doing this less often.
We are also buying the supermarket versions eg the sainsburys ttd deal of 2 mains and 2 starters for £15
We are also cooking more
Thai salmon curry tonight with stir fry noodles!

Waitingfordoggo · 09/01/2026 13:35

‘Still’? Are you under the impression everyone used to have a takeaway every Friday?

In the past we’ve had takeaways once or twice a month. I’ve gone right off them as most of them are shite and very expensive. Occasionally my family wants one and I appreciate a break from cooking so they get one and I usually just make something else for myself or have some toast and cake. I’m not averse to treats at all, I just don’t find takeaways to be a treat.

tealandteal · 09/01/2026 13:37

Would love to but it is so expensive now! Probably every 3 months or so. Definitely more frequently when we didn’t have kids.

OneShyQuail · 09/01/2026 13:38

We have right by us a lovely pizza place that costs us £22 for 2 adults 2 children (half the price of dominos and nicer)

A lovely Cantonese place our regular order costs £20 something (2 adults 2 kids)

A chippy (which is much more money now) its the cost of the fish so if we have a chippy we just tend to get the chips and add something to it ourself.

We have a curry place which is lovely to but we all love different naans and poppadoms so that gets expensive 😂

LadyLapsang · 09/01/2026 13:40

We never have takeaways at home, but we do eat out quite a lot.

BCBird · 09/01/2026 13:41

Never. Live alone and never got into this habit. Sadly food choices are limited for me;what I'd like and what I can eat are two different things.

Rarely get one.
We can afford it but they tend to be very disappointing and I can make better faster

This. We'd probably get them more often if they were better quality.

because Of house move couple of years ago snd amount of work needed I can’t justify takeaways anymore. In our birthdays and that’s about it right now. Used to be every Friday for years, then every month. Now, hardly ever.

Agree too

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 09/01/2026 13:44

Looking forwards to our Friday takeaway - I have fish, mushy peas and a slice of (homemade) bread and butter. (And I eat the batter! It's the best bit.)

Same. Once in a blue moon everything is great but too often things arrive tasteless, with some part burnt or something missing and always late. Last time I ordered was when I’ll in bed with no one to help and the food was all cold and rubbery.

Maybe I’m just unlucky but one time I added on a chocolate fudge pudding as a rare treat and it arrived a flattened burnt mess like someone had shoved a frozen slice into the microwave and left too long.

So now when I fancy a takeaway I just remind myself of those awful experiences and how much I paid just to throw most of it away! And I just happily make my own food instead lol

HollyhockDays · 09/01/2026 13:45

Yes. I hate cooking so it’s my night off. The price of them is ridiculous now though.

I have allergy problems too. Eating in a proper restaurant is fine. Anything g else is a shot in the dark!

Jinglejells · 09/01/2026 13:46

I’m in London where you get every single type of takeaway delivery. Fridays are takeaways here. I’m not cooking, it’s also movie night so we indulge.

TwillTrousers · 09/01/2026 13:47

Very rarely. I just don’t like them much anymore. Every time I get a Chinese I regret it, it’s not great and makes me feel like crap.
maybe fish and chips a few times a year.

Turmerictea · 09/01/2026 13:48

We get one on valentines, birthdays and anniversaries. Sorry!

FurForksSake · 09/01/2026 13:49

@GasPanic there will always be people who call things “obscene” without thinking through context and consequence. If you spent that and 90% was binned then that might have raised an eyebrow. I find it best just not to add these things up 🤣

wandererofthekingdom · 09/01/2026 13:50

If there was more choice around here I'm sure I would!

TheChosenTwo · 09/01/2026 13:54

Dh and ds will order on most Saturdays,
they are out most of the day both playing and then watching football and often get back just in time to watch an evening game on telly 😂
I usually make my main meal of Saturday at lunchtime and then just have a salad or something else quick and easy for dinner - always veggie. I do eat meat but am shit at cooking it. When they get back they’ll order something because they won’t want what I’ve cooked and they quite enjoy their boys day finished off with a takeaway by the fire watching the footy.
I’ve taken part in maybe 3 takeaways in the last 15 months or so since I’ve been on MJ, enjoyed them all immensely.

bloomchamp · 09/01/2026 13:55

There’s four of us in our house. Everytime we decide to have a takeaway there’s a long debate about what to have. One can’t eat Chinese, one hates Indian food, another isn’t a fan of chippy. We go round in circles for an hour. Someone goes off in a strop. I cook pasta lol!

pinkypoo8 · 09/01/2026 13:55

Sadly no maybe once every three or four months

Inthewrongtimezone · 09/01/2026 13:56

No, we haven't had a regular Friday takeaway in absolutely ages, not in this current century, in fact! We used to, but as it was mainly driven by our DC, (who still loves takeaways), we stopped the regular Friday takeouts when DC left home in 1999.

These days DH and I have a takeaway quite rarely, maybe two or three times a year at home and once or twice a year a year when on holiday.

ByWarmShark · 09/01/2026 13:57

No, it's too expensive and since peri hit I'd honestly be 3 stone overweight if I had a takeaway every week. We do buy food as a convenience but it tends to be when we're out anyway and we go for cheaper options with some veg included.

TBH telling them the budget is just so large it can't be added up is unlikely to make the situation any better.
