To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

Maybe, before you slag off the entire male population of the UK, you should tell us where you're originally from so we can find fault with the men from your part of the world?! You must have met some pretty awful ones to make you think that none of them are up to scratch!

UniquePinkSwan · 09/01/2026 08:16

Loads of nice men out there. I married one.

Liissey0710 · 09/01/2026 08:16

Do you mean looks wise. Because like plenty of crims and gangsters like jason statham around. Womanisms like most of hugh grants characters.

randomchap · 09/01/2026 08:17

You're watching the wrong tv. Try Keeping Up Appearances, The Royle Family, and Phoenix Nights for a more realistic portrayal.

I don’t know how British men are portrayed in movies and tv series. Can you explain what you mean OP?

As usual first post nails it.

OriginalSkang · 09/01/2026 08:18

Which characters are you thinking about? The mind boggles..

Yeah, Coronation Street is a more realistic portrayal than dreams of Jude Law in The Holiday 😂

Sweetiedarling7 · 09/01/2026 08:19

Are you thinking Hugh Grant in Four Weddings?

NotAnotherScarf · 09/01/2026 08:19

I mean are you talking about Mr bean or mr bond?

HopSpringsEternal · 09/01/2026 08:20

British men in US films tend to be either sappy public school boys or villians. Which type are you after?

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 09/01/2026 08:20

Do you want one like Hugh Grant in 4 weddings or like Vinnie Jones in Snatch? Either are available.

This might shock you OP, but women are also, not all like we are in the movies. 😂

Truetoself · 09/01/2026 08:20

A bit of a generalisation! How are you describing British men? In my experience they are no different to men of any other nationality but are dependent on their upbringing and environment which varies even within Britain.

Catdrama2 · 09/01/2026 08:20

Do you mean the English gentleman stereotype like Colin Firth? Or do you mean OLD has been disappointing?

Smartiepants79 · 09/01/2026 08:24

British men are just men. The same as men everywhere. Some good ones some idiots.

TheGoddessFrigg · 09/01/2026 08:26

Are ANY men?....

JadedVeryJaded · 09/01/2026 08:29

You’re not wrong at all OP. That’s why my current squeeze is from overseas!

UK man - take your pick from mansplaining self obsessed bores (cycling or running or gadgets or work) or overweight shapeless lumps in grubby sports gear (the irony) or effeminate creatures with badly shaped moustaches in yellow teacosy hats and cord trousers that don’t reach their ankles.

Yeah this. With bells 🔔 on 👆

FriendlyFlame · 09/01/2026 08:31

Doesn't that depend largely on whether you watch Hallmark movies and romcoms, police procedurals, true crime quizzes or reality TV that either features buffed shirtless men with an IQ lower than their shoes or men with poor diets in grey tracksuit bottoms being pulled in by the cops?

I mean, there's a lot of ground between Colin Firth, David Mitchell, Rowan Atkinson, Idris Elba, and the cast of 24 Hours in Police Custody.

Fuck me.
Talk about generalising a whole nation of males into one big homogenous group who do EXACTLY the same thing…

Good luck with your current ‘ squeeze ‘ 🙄

I see what you mean, in british movies/tv series shown abroad you see ok/good looking men m,sometimes dressed in suits, with posh accents- then in reality majority are brummie/liverpudlian?/geordie etc accents that sound low IQ and they dress the part-tracksuits. And majority have no manners-dont let women enter or exit first, dont give up their seat, dont help a struggling woman carrying heavy item, push past heavily women onto buses etc even pregnant women, dont help women get seated by pulling chair out etc- going back to my homeland for visits is refreshing and has made me realise how well men of all ages in my country have been raised and they are not worried about offending a woman by offering their help like is also case in the uk.while my british husband is great, awesome husband and father but he has had to level up in manners that are expected from men from my homeland so much that even be recognized this

Brutal😂😂

ChikinLikin · 09/01/2026 08:37

Oi!
That's our men you're talking about.
We're allowed to slag them off, but you're not.

Yeah I mean I'm sure most Americans and Canadians aren't like Hallmark movies

Catdrama2 · 09/01/2026 08:39

Maybe watch Eastenders and Shameless for a bit of balance of British men 😂
