To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

An advanced username search says it all. Goady shite thread.

These threads really are boring now. British culture, education, cuisine and now men. I'm disappointed with many foreign things but I don't need to start a click bait thread.

Right, I’m still cringing over the “I’m ashamed and embarrassed to be British because of our history” thread

Nichebitch · 09/01/2026 18:58

Kingscallops · 09/01/2026 18:33

Try living in the real world instead of fantasy land and you won't be disappointed. If you're setting yourself high expectations that's on you. Are all Italian men tall dark and handsome as the myth goes?

Edited

I did say she was generalising and I’m not as thick as your post would suggest. Pretending the movies we grow up with don’t shape our expectations is naive.
also I would say, of the countries I’ve lived in, uk is where reality differs from movies the most, and this is just because there’s less “middle ground people” - I.e. lots of posh types and also Jeremy Kyle show types compared with “normal” types.
But this is one of those threads where people just go against the OP from the start anyway

You mean stereotypes and tropes in films are not accurate in real life?! Well I am shocked!

British men are great. They are good conversationalists (not all but many are). They have a decent, self-deprecating sense of humour. They can be witty. Some are a bit rough around the edges but some people like that!

Personally I don’t like men from other countries. They are misogynistic, condescending and have an over-inflated view of their appearance/superiority. They don’t know how to laugh properly. They bore me to shit. Why don’t you relocate to Afghanistan so that you can obtain a comparison? I’ve heard they treat their women really well.

I also find women from other countries are like this too, particularly European (some parts) or Middle eastern- think they're gorgeous (they're far from it), have an overestimated opinion of themselves, money-orientated, serious, aloof, boring, pretentious, zero sense of humour and high maintenence (when they have nothing to warrant it). I'm a woman BTW.

Well that tends to happen when once again it's the British being slated. What do you expect, everyone to join in on the bitch fest? As I said it's a goady thread anyway.

I can't image being so crass as to go onto a forum based in the country to which I've moved at some point and slag of half of the population like OP (to a lesser extent) and some of the more obnoxious PPs in this thread.

Not exactly classy is it?

I am quoting this because I am called Newspaper Taxis...😎

This is deeply simplistic. Women don't spontaneously 'take pride in their appearance'. Having long been prevented from the same access to workplaces and the possibility of economic independence men have traditionally had, women's appearance has had to be what they trade on, their access to money via marriage. Men have traditionally been able to take little interest in their appearance because they haven't had to. They were a meal ticket via marriage to women who had few other options until recently. Now that things are somewhat more even, and women are outperforming men in education, you have incels complaining they can't bag a woman.

I think you're being mean in your response, in which you do appear actually to agree with me. I didn't say women 'spontaneously' take pride in their appearance, I'm just saying they do, for whatever reason, including the ones you cite - having to fit in with the prevailing societal attitudes or whathaveyou. I say that at the end of one paragraph - we can argue whether that's right or wrong.

Yeah, Coronation Street is a more realistic portrayal than dreams of Jude Law in The Holiday 😂

Hmmm... I wouldn't mind being in a reality where some of the men on Corrie pass me on the street. Kit, Adam, Carl... 😍

Just wait until someone starts a thread about "should I move to the US/Australia/NZ/Canada/insert any country?" - then you can watch the Brits slag off any country other than their own. We must be about due for another one of those.

Do you mean the English gentleman stereotype like Colin Firth? Or do you mean OLD has been disappointing?

Colin Firth 😍

I don't do OLD 🤢 meant Englishmen in OP, not British.

Well, I’ve met plenty. Married a diamond - and my son, grandsons, dad and everyone else in my personal life have been.

Bad men (and women) exist all over the world. 🤷‍♀️

OP, many posters are being silly here.
I’m not British either and I know exactly what you mean, as any other non British person would. You mean the Hugh Grant / Jude Law in the holiday characters. And obviously you’re generalising, but it is a real shocker when you arrive here to see how different reality is from stereotypes. And no, we don’t have this issue in our home countries because most don’t have globally exported romcoms that define a vision of our men (our women) for the rest of the world.

I think it is funny that you refer to the bobble hat and short trousers as not expected as surely that's a kind of Shoreditch young man look, counter culture look (think maybe out of fashion now). British youth have always had that counter culture look since the 1960s, how do you not know that? If you think every man was going to be like characters in Richard Curtis films then you are a bit behind the times. My DH's friends are a bit like that but the modern version which IME goes hand in hand with cycling, skiing, snowboarding, surfing etc. But these are men early to mid 40s so maybe the men to follow are not that way inclined.

Oh sorry the wool hat and short trousers reference was to the OP.

ManManManManMan · 09/01/2026 11:02

I disagree. I am basically a cross between Mark and Jez from Peep Show.

😂 yes, character wise I know more men like that to be fair but they still do the cycling, the running etc. I was watching the Night Manager (?) last night and I only know one man like the lead character but in reality serious men like that are quite rare despite this portrayal as the British upper middle class stereotype!

Sweetsfromheaven · 10/01/2026 09:48

Well, well, I am so sorry if I am disappointed in the men in the country I live. Arseholes are located all around the world, I agree. It's just that Englishmen are often portrayed GLOBALLY in film and TV as gentlemen and the majority of them are far from it.

Also true. Except I don't live in an Asian country. British men also want a skivvy and degrade women. Moot point.

Edit: Quoted a post deflecting my OP on to Asian men.

Oh dear, 😂 This is actually funny. You seriously thought real life men were like movie men @Sweetsfromheaven ???!

NO man is the same as the men you see portrayed in the movies.. Many men are absolute dickheads at some point in their life. Many are guilty of being lazy when it comes to pulling their weight around the house (and with childcare/domestic duties,) flirty with other women (and more sometimes) and spending family money on his hobbies.... EVEN THE MEN IN THE COUNTRY YOU ORIGINATED FROM! Yes, really! 😆

Not saying ALL men, but yes, some men are lazy, and obnoxious, and check out of family life as often as they can once kids come along because they don't like hard work. Again, many men from your country of origin will be the same!

Not saying women are perfect, before the 'I don't know any men like that' NAMALT brigade appear, but this thread is not about women is it, it's about men!

Oh and colour me shocked, the OP posted this contentious thread about two and a half hours ago, and hasn't returned.

Nothing to see here. Wink

Oh dear. Someone has missed the mark.

Because I live here? And this portrayal of Englishmen is observed GLOBALLY. 🤔

ghostofchristmaspasta · 09/01/2026 08:42

I outsourced, there was no chance I was getting together with someone from here.

Honestly people will get defensive, their husbands and sons are British men, but you are right.

Culturally straight British men don’t take great care of themselves, I’m definitely not into the sportswear look (outside of sports) and everything about lad culture puts me off. There are lots of men that reject all of this but they’re harder to find.

Lad culture is so unattractive in even the most handsome and accomplished men.

I am sure though that the men of the women on here jumping on here to defend them are as lovely as they claim. I have met and made friends with a grand total of 3 genuinely lovely non misogynist men in my time here. Men are so disappointing and I often wonder if I'd have come across any of the same if I had tried to stick it out in my home country.

So what you are saying is that you are cross and disappointed because not all English men IRL are like characters in films played by Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Tom Hiddleston et al. Is that right?

God you sound shallow and a bit thick, frankly. I expect they're avoiding you love.

You’re not wrong at all OP. That’s why my current squeeze is from overseas!

UK man - take your pick from mansplaining self obsessed bores (cycling or running or gadgets or work) or overweight shapeless lumps in grubby sports gear (the irony) or effeminate creatures with badly shaped moustaches in yellow teacosy hats and cord trousers that don’t reach their ankles.

This. Whilst patriarchy is a cancerous disease, men in many other countries I've come across do seem to be more like Colin Firth than any Englishman I've yet to engage with.
