To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

OP posts:

You’re not wrong at all OP. That’s why my current squeeze is from overseas!

UK man - take your pick from mansplaining self obsessed bores (cycling or running or gadgets or work) or overweight shapeless lumps in grubby sports gear (the irony) or effeminate creatures with badly shaped moustaches in yellow teacosy hats and cord trousers that don’t reach their ankles.

Is this a very new squeeze? You were on a thread recently being glad to be single weren't you?

ghostofchristmaspasta · 09/01/2026 08:42

I outsourced, there was no chance I was getting together with someone from here.

Honestly people will get defensive, their husbands and sons are British men, but you are right.

Culturally straight British men don’t take great care of themselves, I’m definitely not into the sportswear look (outside of sports) and everything about lad culture puts me off. There are lots of men that reject all of this but they’re harder to find.

JadedVeryJaded · 09/01/2026 08:43

I am single as in not married or cohabiting 😉 I enjoy my freedom

Oh, Mr Bean probably came and swept her off her feet.

JadedVeryJaded · 09/01/2026 08:44

Definitely not Ronan Atkinson!!

I don’t know how British men are portrayed in movies and tv series. Can you explain what you mean OP?

Im also at a loss. Care to explain OP

Screamingabdabz · 09/01/2026 08:47

Op you need to give further detail about what type of British stereotype you see in films and compare and contrast to what you see in RL otherwise we can’t really judge your AIBU.

TittyGajillions · 09/01/2026 08:49

This just in, TV and movies are not real life. Stay tuned for more shocking revelations 🙄

This made me laugh. This is a good sitcom that this poster described. You need to watch Red Dwarf OP. Probably similar to this description. The only decent, useful man in that was an android!

British people in films are very stereotypical. I don't expect American men to all high five each other and shout "woooo yeah!" everytime they do something right.

Mithral · 09/01/2026 08:53

I'm not British but my husband is so Ive taken one off your hands. Literally no men of my immediate acquaintance, British or otherwise, slob about in sportswear.

Dollymylove · 09/01/2026 08:54

Oh look another British bashing post. Insert any other ethnicity and the racism drum would start beating. Try somewhere like Afghanistan or Qatar for instance. You'll be treated like a queen

I see what you mean, in british movies/tv series shown abroad you see ok/good looking men m,sometimes dressed in suits, with posh accents- then in reality majority are brummie/liverpudlian?/geordie etc accents that sound low IQ and they dress the part-tracksuits. And majority have no manners-dont let women enter or exit first, dont give up their seat, dont help a struggling woman carrying heavy item, push past heavily women onto buses etc even pregnant women, dont help women get seated by pulling chair out etc- going back to my homeland for visits is refreshing and has made me realise how well men of all ages in my country have been raised and they are not worried about offending a woman by offering their help like is also case in the uk.while my british husband is great, awesome husband and father but he has had to level up in manners that are expected from men from my homeland so much that even be recognized this

You mean all men in the UK don't have a posh home countries accent? What a shocker 😄

Bluebluesummer · 09/01/2026 08:55

You see over the last few decades I’ve become quite tired of the prevalence of sexual violence perpetrated by males, VAWG, patricide, male control exerted over women and children.

I have finally accepted the fact that I am very uncomfortable with the sheer percentage of the male population worldwide who engage in these behaviours not to mention other antisocial behaviour too.

That was a me problem where I was so uncomfortable with acknowledging the prevalence of these issues that I used to prioritise my own comfort over calling it out. But this is the male population the world over and nothing too bad do with British men or Muslim men or whatever way women distance “their” man from these issues. Men as a sex have significant issues that they need to face up to and any one of them who can and who works towards changing that is not disappointing to me.

The movies aren't real?

Who knew?

"outsourced" does gives strong thai bride vibes.

gannett · 09/01/2026 09:05

Not to defend British men in any way, but it's mostly a little disturbing that anyone thought movies and TV shows would have any bearing on reality. You realise you were watching fiction, not documentaries?

Mapleleaf114 · 09/01/2026 09:16

Jc2001 · 09/01/2026 08:54

british tv shows movies that are popular abroad: harry potter movies, james bond movies, tv series like doc martin and heartbeat- they dont show eastenders, incest street abroad for a reason so foreigners come here unprepared, another thing is how filthy, the streets and roads everywhere are littered with rubbish and run down uk is-thats not shown either. So any tourist coming here will be shocked on more than one front,by my experience with family and friends visiting

Dgll · 09/01/2026 09:17

I recently discovered that not all American men look like Brad Pitt. They also don't regularly save the world from aliens or jump from moving trains onto the saddle of a galloping horse. It was most deflating.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 09/01/2026 09:22

I'd no idea that British men were an homogenous group! Mine's a cracker (my opinion and that's what counts) no more like the chap next door, than the one over the road. TV shows us what fits the plot, not what's real. Just get out more and I hate generalisations, they are lazy thinking.

Teddleshon1 · 09/01/2026 09:25

I’m not British but am a huge fan of British men. I find them
infinitely preferable to those from my home country (Australia). Ever since the day I arrived I was struck by what good conversationalists they are and how in the main the are kind and considerate with a great sense of humour.

Loads of nice men out there. I married one.

Me too. I also raised one and was fathered by one.
