To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

OP posts:

You mean all men in the UK don't have a posh home countries accent? What a shocker 😄

My low-IQ Liverpudlian husband has three degrees and is finishing his novel.

"outsourced" does gives strong thai bride vibes.

Hahaha I actually do see that reading it back! I assure you that is not the case though and my husband is from where my family live and originate from.

Crap men are everywhere, not sure why you pick Britain for this particular issue.

Because it's the only one where she wouldn't get called a racist. Funny that🤨

I recently discovered that not all American men look like Brad Pitt. They also don't regularly save the world from aliens or jump from moving trains onto the saddle of a galloping horse. It was most deflating.

They can't even discern the consequences of voting for someone with the iq of a squirrel! ( Sorry squirrels )
I can no longer watch the "usa maverick saves the world" movies without thinking of them as comedies.

5128gap · 09/01/2026 09:59

No idea what you mean. Every British man I know had floppy hair, a crooked grin and is poshly and endearingly inept by day. By night he sits in disused warehouses ordering the execution of rivals to his criminal empire, and emoting about how much he loves his brother in a strong regional accent.

KimberleyClark · 09/01/2026 10:09

I assume the OP is talking about English men. “British men” also includes Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish men.

AncientMarina · 09/01/2026 10:11

It's really annoying when you move somewhere and expect it to be like the films and all you get when you arrive is reality.

I went to where they filmed Downton Abbey. Firstly, nobody carried my case in and offered me cocktails but FML, the real downer was that it was modern day.

That's the last time I plan my future around fiction.

RedRiverShore6 · 09/01/2026 10:11

Have you been watching the Harlem Coben series

LiveToTell · 09/01/2026 10:12

JadedVeryJaded · 09/01/2026 08:44

Definitely not Ronan Atkinson!!

*Rowan.

snoopyscosmicanomaly · 09/01/2026 10:13

What exactly is it about "British men" that you do not like and where are you from?

Pedallleur · 09/01/2026 10:13

Catdrama2 · 09/01/2026 08:39

Maybe watch Eastenders and Shameless for a bit of balance of British men 😂

And Brassic

AquaForce · 09/01/2026 10:15

HatStickBoots · 09/01/2026 08:18

I don’t know how British men are portrayed in movies and tv series. Can you explain what you mean OP?

Probably James Bond

Badbadbunny · 09/01/2026 10:15

If you keep looking in the same places, then it's no surprise you keep getting the same "kind" of man. Wasn't it Einstein who said insanity was doing the same thing and expecting different outcomes?

In general terms, the same "kind" of man is on OLD, the same "kind" is in the pubs and clubs trying to pick up women.

Very few "good" men will be out on the pull, either in real life or on OLD - they're already spoken for, so will almost certainly be excluded from the kind of places where the OP is looking for a man, which will be populated mostly by men who aren't taken - often for good reason!

You’re not wrong at all OP. That’s why my current squeeze is from overseas!

UK man - take your pick from mansplaining self obsessed bores (cycling or running or gadgets or work) or overweight shapeless lumps in grubby sports gear (the irony) or effeminate creatures with badly shaped moustaches in yellow teacosy hats and cord trousers that don’t reach their ankles.

None of the men I know are like that! Where on Earth do you live?

Cocomelon67 · 09/01/2026 10:18

Where do you live? What men are you meeting? I married a very nice British man who is lovely. But you wouldn’t find him in the pub or in a club or possibly not even on online dating… sign up to do a masters, join a charity trustee board or volunteer at the homeless work your parish church does for example.

PearPartridge · 09/01/2026 10:19

There's lots of nationalities living in the UK. If you've had no luck finding a British man why not marry a superior different nationality? What nationality are you?

Dollymylove · 09/01/2026 08:54

Oh look another British bashing post. Insert any other ethnicity and the racism drum would start beating. Try somewhere like Afghanistan or Qatar for instance. You'll be treated like a queen

Brit Bash Bots getting triggered by 60+ million people out of billions. It's some kind of fetish.....

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 09/01/2026 08:18

As usual first post nails it.

Or to put it another way first post is cringe knee jerk insecure defensive

NewspaperTaxis · 09/01/2026 10:31

I'll out myself as a bloke and say I do suddenly see what the OP means. It may be to do with the ongoing cost of living, or the sense that everything good in the UK now has to be paid for. I don't get the sense that blokes take pride in their appearance unless they are in a position to afford gym membership and nice threads, in which case it becomes more a statement of earning capacity than anything else. I think women avoid this trap because they take pride in their appearance, the culture leans that way irrespective of a women's individual earning capacity, we can argue whether it should be like that of course.

Living in the suburbs, I am also not sure where I would go to buy some nice clothes, I mean M&S is just rubbish, almost deliberately churning out crap, alternatives are Tui (I think) at Sainbury's, Next (which is okay) and clothing at ASDA. I know the OP wasn't talking about clothing but I feel it sets the tone. I mean, the run-of-the-mill off the peg clothing is rubbish. To go elsewhere means you are making how you look your hobby, which is fine, but then you're a dandy.

It's as though there's a subtle culture war, well not culture war but culture stand-off among men.

Aluna · 09/01/2026 10:35

OP I’m guessing you were hoping for a:

Hugh Grant,Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumerbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Daniel Craig mashup… Foreign women often are.

I went to France looking for Jean-Marc Barr but I didn’t find him either. 😄

Differentforgirls · 09/01/2026 10:39

LiveToTell · 09/01/2026 10:15

Why?

Because everyone else is posting about English men.
