To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

So what you are saying is that you are cross and disappointed because not all English men IRL are like characters in films played by Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Tom Hiddleston et al. Is that right?

God you sound shallow and a bit thick, frankly. I expect they're avoiding you love.

No. I am saying that's the expectation a lot of foreign women have of Englishmen.

Your post is incredibly impolite.

@Sweetsfromheaven genuine question, which countries menfolk are more, on the whole, akin to Colin Firth than the UK?

Sweetsfromheaven · 10/01/2026 10:03

Are you a man? Henry Cavill is damn fine inside and out. A rarity!

If you describe men like that, you are highly unlikely to attract a Tom Hiddleston quiet and unassuming type are you- the characters he plays wouldn't want the attention!

You’re not wrong at all OP. That’s why my current squeeze is from overseas!

UK man - take your pick from mansplaining self obsessed bores (cycling or running or gadgets or work) or overweight shapeless lumps in grubby sports gear (the irony) or effeminate creatures with badly shaped moustaches in yellow teacosy hats and cord trousers that don’t reach their ankles.

You'll get flack for this

But you're not wrong

ChikinLikin · 09/01/2026 08:37

Oi!
That's our men you're talking about.
We're allowed to slag them off, but you're not.

I live here and pay my taxes.

Tom Hiddleston is not quiet and unassuming. He is brimming with masculinity. Oh, I do know his sort. Rare and never at the pub 24/7 snorting coke for the bants.

Maybe watch Eastenders and Shameless for a bit of balance of British men 😂

A more accurate depiction, I have come to realise.

I assume the OP is talking about English men. “British men” also includes Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish men.

Yes, I was. The men in Scotland at least have better manners and social skills.

What exactly is it about "British men" that you do not like and where are you from?

Really? Read the threads on here about coke addict husbands, closet gay conservative 'Christian' husbands, lazy and emotionally abusive twats, etc

OP posts:
Solaire18381 · 10/01/2026 10:22

I wouldn't say just British men, but ALL men are not the "average" compared to men portrayed in movies, unfortunately. Either in looks or anything else.

Goldenbear · 10/01/2026 10:25

Sweetsfromheaven · 10/01/2026 10:08

This. Whilst patriarchy is a cancerous disease, men in many other countries I've come across do seem to be more like Colin Firth than any Englishman I've yet to engage with.

So you don't think the English Gentleman is associated with patriarchy?

Yes to all three! Not that he would want to play someone 15 years older and 6" shorter and fatter

You clearly don't know how sort as you can be "brimming with masculinity" but understated and that's exactly how you are taught to be if you are from that background as unfortunately much of it is down to 'class'.

His not "how". It equally goes with a hefty dose of repression of emotions!

Good ones are out there! I bagged a public school boy but bring no spring chickens neither of us are like movie stars, personality comes first

Hahahaha really? You like sweeping generalisations, don't you?

Scottish men and Englishmen are really not that different in many ways.

I did meet someone who I thought had a lovely personality - quiet and unassuming. Subdued even. Turned out to be a right wing knobhead.

It really depends
some are ok to good looking
my dentist probably could play bond
my kids teacher better looking than many movie stars (leo or jake etc)
one of my old bosses looked like robbie williams - but better looking
But i guess overall the men arent that good looking. And any that are can be a bit arrogant or sleezy.
Or cheats jude law, hugh grant.

the photo of superman with his brothers is probably quite accurate in that there will be one good-very good looking with lots of other ok looking. Then (not superman just generally) lots of not great and lots of quite bad looking.
the main soaps i would say people are worse looking than in real life. Hollyoaks though was always much better than reality.
however lots of ok - to not great so say a 5-8 range of uk men i know got snapped up by non uk women (Canadian, australian, US).
Most of the kids at school are really plain and realistically so are their parents. So the one -2 pretty kids actually do have the much better looking parents.
in terms of looks though obviously uk men arent that good, likely to be pale and dark haired teeth issues. And maybe overweight
When i was younger objectively people were at least much thinner. Almost all the 18-30 lads read were very thin.

At uni one of the ok looking blokes so say 6-8 started dating a girl who was very pretty like a 8-9 which was surprising to me. However they did split and he then ended up with a Filipino wife (just said in relation to ok looking boys being snapped up by people from other countries)
Actually some of the best looking women so 8-9 etc are the only single ones. Whereas that doesnt seem to be the case with men.

The very good looking men are generally either taken or pick girls up easily so aren’t likely to need OLD etc.

My low-IQ Liverpudlian husband has three degrees and is finishing his novel.

Love this.

I see what you mean, in british movies/tv series shown abroad you see ok/good looking men m,sometimes dressed in suits, with posh accents- then in reality majority are brummie/liverpudlian?/geordie etc accents that sound low IQ and they dress the part-tracksuits. And majority have no manners-dont let women enter or exit first, dont give up their seat, dont help a struggling woman carrying heavy item, push past heavily women onto buses etc even pregnant women, dont help women get seated by pulling chair out etc- going back to my homeland for visits is refreshing and has made me realise how well men of all ages in my country have been raised and they are not worried about offending a woman by offering their help like is also case in the uk.while my british husband is great, awesome husband and father but he has had to level up in manners that are expected from men from my homeland so much that even be recognized this

I have to agree with this.

I live abroad for most of the year and when I come home it’s startling how so many men in my old home town behave with unnecessarily aggression, drink to excess, vomit in the street, start fights or destroy property and openly make misogynistic and racist remarks.

I had brought a friend back with me who was keen to explore the UK and she was appalled, and I was embarrassed.

Behaviour which would be classed as totally unacceptable where I live now, just seems to be accepted as normal in the UK. Our usual tolerance seems to have morphed in to negligence.

Of course this is a huge generalisation. Not all men behave this way by any means. But the UK does seem to have developed a unique culture around drinking that’s for sure.

Where I live it is the same. The majority are misogynists, cokeheads, domestic abusers, racists, 'lads'. Farage and Tommy Tens supporters. No exaggeration.

I am glad to see the bigotry against Northerners/Brummies has appeared - a MN classic!

You Southern twats do know you sound like chinless brainless inbred poshos to us right? 😂😂

At Uni I was asked out repeatedly by someone I really liked but couldn't get past his posh-boy London private school accent, it gave me the ick so so badly!
