To think British men are almost always nothing like those portrayed in movies and tv series?

As a foreigner living here for many years, I am sorely disappointed in the calibre of British men. 😒 Don't get me wrong, I don't live in fantasy, just be nice to meet a good man.

I have to agree with this.

I live abroad for most of the year and when I come home it’s startling how so many men in my old home town behave with unnecessarily aggression, drink to excess, vomit in the street, start fights or destroy property and openly make misogynistic and racist remarks.

I had brought a friend back with me who was keen to explore the UK and she was appalled, and I was embarrassed.

Behaviour which would be classed as totally unacceptable where I live now, just seems to be accepted as normal in the UK. Our usual tolerance seems to have morphed in to negligence.

Of course this is a huge generalisation. Not all men behave this way by any means. But the UK does seem to have developed a unique culture around drinking that’s for sure.

And I agree, there are men who don't behave like this. But they may still be fascists... disappointingly. I find it odd how so many women defend these types over women's safety and autonomy.

Are you saying that other aspects of Britain have met your expectations? 😂

The country is about 25 years behind its continental equivalents and deteriorating fast. The men just reflect that...

So leave. You’d be doing the rest of us a favour 👍

Where are you meeting these men?
My SILs are nice, busy with demanding jobs, putting kids to bed, on the edge of the pitch supporting footballers, watching tv. You need to looK elsewhere

Well, well, I am so sorry if I am disappointed in the men in the country I live. Arseholes are located all around the world, I agree. It's just that Englishmen are often portrayed GLOBALLY in film and TV as gentlemen and the majority of them are far from it.

Are you saying that your opinion of how the average English man should behave is based entirely on stereotypical fictitious portrayals in film/tv? Oh dear.
Confused

In thousands of American movies (for instance), the evil villain of the piece is very often a British character played by an Englishman. And when there's a call for an honourable gentlemanly character, they tend to use an Englishman as well. Mainly because they are damn good actors. Nothing to do with what they are like in real life.

You don’t think telling immigrants to “leave” is the lowest of the low?

^^ This!

Especially when there are 5.5 million Brits living permanently outside the UK . And the total British diaspora (including people with British ancestry) is thought to be much larger, potentially over 200 million.

And record numbers of British citizens are leaving the UK annually, with about 257,000 departing in 2024!

Immigration works both ways.

Facts

Where do you live where you are only surrounded by English men? Much of England is very multicultural. In London for example, don't something like 60% of the population identify as non British? If you need a man that isn't English because of the disappointing calibre, can't you just date another nationality?

@Sweetsfromheaven genuine question, which countries menfolk are more, on the whole, akin to Colin Firth than the UK?

Are you looking to emigrate to the land of Colin Firth's?

ginasevern · 10/01/2026 14:48

@Sweetsfromheaven "I have met and made friends with a grand total of 3 genuinely lovely non misogynist men in my time here. Men are so disappointing and I often wonder if I'd have come across any of the same if I had tried to stick it out in my home country."

The simple answer is, yes you would. I've lived in 5 different countries and have found that men are self absorbed, misogynistic shits everywhere on some level. All cultures favour the patriarchy but some are much worse than others. For example, there are countries where rape isn't a crime. If you're looking for a dream man from a film (whether they're American, Italian, Polish, English or Indian) I wish you the best of fucking luck!

Really? Read the threads on here about coke addict husbands, closet gay conservative 'Christian' husbands, lazy and emotionally abusive twats, etc

Generalising a bit and you sound Christophobic. I can't think of a country anywhere in the world that does not have some men that are not misogynistic, lazy, emotionally abusive religious fanatics or drug addicts and in my experience, most British men tend to be pretty decent.

Where are you from?

I also find women from other countries are like this too, particularly European (some parts) or Middle eastern- think they're gorgeous (they're far from it), have an overestimated opinion of themselves, money-orientated, serious, aloof, boring, pretentious, zero sense of humour and high maintenence (when they have nothing to warrant it). I'm a woman BTW.

You have a chip on your shoulder. You think we have no sense of humour because we’re not self deprecating (as a pp described British humour). Devaluing yourself in the name of humour is a sign of insecurity and comes across as weak in most of the world.
We’re “money oriented” because we grew up in a more traditional way of life where gender roles are more defined, and we’re use to men doing more for us. And before jump in with your “Well we’re more independent than you”- you can keep your 50-50 men. If you’re happy with that set up in the dating world, then fine, but your men don’t even buy into your feminism movement. They just take advantage of this one element because it benefits them financially, they’re still just as misogynistic as men from the rest of the world, they just hide it better. Don’t fool yourself into thinking they respect you more (read about all the useless DH’s on here)

And you’re kidding yourself when you say foreign women are not attractive. You don’t believe even believe that yourself while you’re typing it, you’re just looking for attention and to offend the OP. There’s attractive and unattractive people from all countries, and I have some very pretty British female friends, but as a whole it’s well known worldwide that British women have a reputation for being the least attractive (and easiest to sleep with due to the hook up and binge drinking culture). Don’t shoot the messenger, ask anyone from the European holiday destinations, they all have a lot to say about ‘Brits abroad’ and their behaviour.

Loads of nice men out there. I married one.

I snagged myself a good-looking Scot. He looked damned fine in a kilt!

Hmm. Haven't read all the posts, but are we using "British" to mean "English" here? raises eyebrows

YABU in general to expect people in real life to be like characters in films and tv programmes.

She does. As we both know, Scottish men are brilliant. The OP agrees 🤣🥰

Wildbushlady · 11/01/2026 00:13

It's truly shocking. Not every man in China has long flowing locks and their own personal zipwire. And not every man from Korea looks and acts like Byeon Woo Seok.

Out of curiosity, what country are you from where dramas and movies accurately portray every individual in a country?

This thread is very entertaining.

My view is, some English men are lovely, some are horrible, and in film, they all seem to make an appearance, the gentlemanly English chap with the stiff upper lip stereotype, seemed to fade out a couple of decades ago.

I have dated Scottish, French, Italian and Greek men, I liked the variety in my youth. I settled for an English lad 50 years ago....I made a good choice. 😎

Greenmouldycheese · 12/01/2026 19:18

I agree. Its very rare to come across a Mr Darcy. Woukdnt it be wonderful if the British gentleman made a huge comeback.

Oh look another British bashing post. Insert any other ethnicity and the racism drum would start beating. Try somewhere like Afghanistan or Qatar for instance. You'll be treated like a queen

I think it makes a refreshing change from the constant American bashing. Anything American or perceived to be American (usually wrongly ) is fair game.
