People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

I think it's a working class thing

Definitely not.

DoggyDilemma25 · 25/12/2025 17:35

Presumably it goes back to an age when you made a meal stretch if you couldn’t afford much meat. Stew and dumplings, chicken and bread sauce, beef and Yorkshire pudding. Same concept!

Which part of Scotland?

Fife 😄

CallMeDaphne · 25/12/2025 17:36

I’ve heard of it.

Still think it looks and tastes like puke.

Growlybear83 · 25/12/2025 17:36

I couldn’t eat roast Turkey or chicken without bread sauce 😮😮

Homemade or packet?

silverwrath · 25/12/2025 17:36

Northerner here. Mum made it every Xmas. I never liked it.

Panda89 · 25/12/2025 17:36

Ooo I love bread sauce and we always had it!
I grew up in the South east and now live in the south west.

BunnyLake · 25/12/2025 17:38

I hate it. I’ve never made it so my (adult) kids have never had it and they probably haven’t heard about it either. They certainly don’t ever ask if we’re having it.

LemonLeaves · 25/12/2025 17:41

I love bread sauce. Did it from a packet this year as I ran out of time to make it, but I usually use the Delia recipe, as that was the one my Mum used and I remember her teaching me when I was little.

I mean, fair enough, but — what do you imagine the texture to be like that it makes you feel ill? Genuinely curious

Like vomit tbh. Sauces should be smooth not lumpy/grainy.

Downdowndownunder · 25/12/2025 17:43

We love bread sauce! Welsh / midlands border. DMum makes it for us every Christmas.

Silvers11 · 25/12/2025 17:44

ChungkingAshes · 25/12/2025 16:45

I’m in the north west and I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know anyone who has it on their Christmas dinner.

Same as us!

Pericombobulations · 25/12/2025 17:44

Parents from southern England, and cant imagine turkey (or chicken) without bread sauce. It was the one dish guaranteed to be empty first growing u (dad would eat the onion so only the cloves left).

DH now isnt fussed but makes it for me, and adult DS has a liking for it too. Tried the packet stuff and found it wasnt anywhere near as nice.

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 25/12/2025 17:44

Bread sauce is my favourite part of Christmas dinner.

DanDin · 25/12/2025 17:45

Welsh. We had it every Christmas. I've never tried it and never will.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 25/12/2025 17:46

I’m in Scotland and I’ve heard of it but never encountered it.

PowerTulle · 25/12/2025 17:46

Love it. We’ve had it every Xmas (and sometimes with pheasant or roast chicken) since forever in our family. Bread, onions, cloves, cream and butter made into a smooth savoury sauce. Both kids were scraping the bowl today so it’s definitely passed to the next generation, delicious!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 25/12/2025 17:48

Heard of it, and tried it, but why spoil a meal by smothering it in warm milky bread?

CallMeDaphne · 25/12/2025 17:48

DoggyDilemma25 · 25/12/2025 17:36

Homemade or packet?

I never eat packet puke.

DoggyDilemma25 · 25/12/2025 17:49

Who would have thought bread, onion, milk and butter could be so offensive to some people 😂

bryceQ · 25/12/2025 17:49

I’ve heard of it but was never something we had. From north east, live in london. Was never something I heard anyone having. Only seen on cooking shows etc

Weepingwillows12 · 25/12/2025 17:49

My family never had it (South East) but my DH loves it and his family always had it (Midlands).

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/12/2025 16:46

Turkey is not turkey without bread sauce.

This! Somerset here, my youngest would leave home if we didn’t have bread sauce. Now mine comes out of a packet, I’m definitely no Nigella, but he would quite happily eat eat two packets to himself. Christmas is pretty much the only time we have it though.

KellyWithABigBelly · 25/12/2025 17:50

Always have it on Christmas Day. Never any other time of year. Somerset. I love the stuff! I’ve also had it served at a Thanksgiving dinner cooked by an American friend, so I guess at least some areas of the USA eat it too.
