People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

Best thing on the plate

TomatoSandwiches · 25/12/2025 17:53

It's amazing cold the next day in a turkey sandwich, mix a dollop of colemans mustard in with salt and pepper 🤌

BashfulClam · 25/12/2025 17:55

Have heard of it but never had it and don’t know anyone who has it. I live in Scotland.

blanketsnuggler · 25/12/2025 17:55

Yep. Love it.
Introduced it to my DH and in laws who'd never heard of it and they all hate it. Kids love it though. My mum always used to home make it at Christmas, otherwise it comes out of a packet. (Shwartz luxury). Mum from Sheffield, I grew up in East Midlands. DH family from Kent and Essex.

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/12/2025 17:56

Scottish. I have heard of it and tried it and it’s really not the nicest. I’d rather have wallpaper paste.

Squirrelsnut · 25/12/2025 18:01

Love it. Make my own every Christmas, it's easy peasy.

Squirrelsnut · 25/12/2025 18:01

..from East Midlands.

I’m a foreigner so we didn’t have it in NA but in-laws do it and I thought I died and went to heaven. Delicious.

Really? Heard of it but never been brave enough to try it. Mushy, warm bread in milk?

JLou08 · 25/12/2025 18:03

I'm from Lancashire. I've heard of it but I've never tried it and don't have a clue what it is made from.

Northerner here. Mum made it every Xmas. I never liked it.

What does it taste like? Texture?

Yes this. I have only tastes bread sauce in England it was on a carvery, I don't know anybody who has it here.

Glittertwins · 25/12/2025 18:06

Used to have it every Christmas with turkey when young, my mum made it.

harriethoyle · 25/12/2025 18:06

My northern Irish family (by marriage) were HORRIFIED the first time I introduced it. Still not convinced 🤣

What does it taste like? Texture?

Sort of rice puddingy texture and it tastes of cloves

Alicorn1707 · 25/12/2025 18:08

yum, also easy to home make

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 25/12/2025 18:08

I’ve honestly never had it with lumps. Nor is it remotely like vomit, ffs. What’s with these OTT fantasy descriptions? It’s not liquid with pieces of actual bread floating in it — it’s a very simple smooth, mild, delicately flavoured sauce Confused

RaraRachael · 25/12/2025 18:09

@Dearg I've just had lovely mealie pudding stuffing with my turkey 🥰

I lived in England for a while and couldn't believe it wasn't a thing and I was expected to eat sage and onion instead. I used to bring some back with me when I visited home.

Abouttoblow · 25/12/2025 18:09

A Boxing Day turkey sandwich with one slice of bread buttered and the other spread with cold home made bread sauce spread is what I look forward to most at Christmas. My mum's bread sauce is 👌

What does it taste like? Texture?

Closest texture I can think of is porridge, but it is a slightly softer/fluffier texture. And is flavoured with cloves, nutmeg, bay leaf and onion.
You infuse milk with the spices for about as long as you can be bothered, sieve the spices out, then stir in torn up white bread, or crumbs of you prefer it smoother, and simmer for a few minutes.
It's delicious.

Iloveyoubut · 25/12/2025 18:10

I’ve heard of it and I’ve seen packets of it, but I don’t know what it’s for. So my brain is saying is it sauce for bread? Or sauce made of breadish stuff? I’ll Google it but I’m just being honest first.

FancyCatSlave · 25/12/2025 18:10

Most definitely heard of it, but I think it’s vile -no-one in my family eats it. It’s all my least favourite flavours though, hate all things milky, nutmeg etc 🤮

cantbearsed247 · 25/12/2025 18:11

I've heard of it but have never tried it. Can't see how it works with gravy.

Abouttoblow · 25/12/2025 18:12

ThriveAT · 25/12/2025 18:04

What does it taste like? Texture?

My mum studs a whole onion with peppercorns and cooks that in milk with bay leaves. Then uses the milk to make the bread sauce. It's delicious.

I've heard of it but have never tried it. Can't see how it works with gravy.

I can’t bring myself to have multiple sauces on one plate, so if I have gravy that’s all I’m having.

XiCi · 25/12/2025 18:13

I love it, and reading this has made me realise I forgot all about it for dinner today and the pot is in the fridge 🙈
