People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

I’m really surprised at the strength of feeling among the bread sauce refusers. It’s so standard to us and very simple, subtle and nice.

PickAChew · 25/12/2025 17:20

Revolting stuff. Ex-MIL - from Lancashire - always made the Delia one and it failed to grow on me.

EuroTour · 25/12/2025 17:20

It's lush (and essential) - SW and had it on a Christmas dinner and with chicken since the 70s

Cranarc · 25/12/2025 17:22

I love it!

I’ll try almost anything once but the thought of the texture makes me feel ill and the appearance doesn’t exactly help either.

Grew up in West Yorkshire and never had bread sauce at childhood Christmases. Vague memories of parents saying neither of them liked it, so maybe just personal choice. Have to say it doesn't sound very appetising, so am not at all tempted to try it.

I also grew up in West Yorkshire, and it was always a part of our Christmas dinner. One caveat - it was never made with cloves (my Dad always said the taste of cloves reminded him of traumatic childhood visits to the dentist), and having had it both ways, it's so much better without. Personal taste, of course.

When I moved over to Merseyside and remarried, I found that none of my new husband's family had heard of it. I made some one Christmas, and it was met with resounding indifference, even though it tasted exactly as I always remembered. Bloody philistines, the lot of 'em.

Pomegranatecarnage · 25/12/2025 17:22

I love it, but it’s time intensive to make. We always have it with Christmas dinner here in South Wales.

ProfessorofCunning · 25/12/2025 17:23

Love bread sauce. My mum always makes a special pot for me if we are at theirs as I’m the only one who really likes it. They have it if it’s there, but only my Christmas dinner is ruined if it’s not available. I made my own just for me today, my 16yr old announced that he loved it earlier and ate half of it 😳 I may have to make more just for left over sandwiches.
DH is Herts/Beds/Bucks-North London heritage and had never heard of it before he spent Christmas with my parents. I’m Welsh/Irish/Scottish and both sides of my family traditionally had it when I was growing up.

Zanatdy · 25/12/2025 17:23

My nieces have it at their grans at Christmas and love it. I don’t know anyone else who does have it (north wales)

TomatoSandwiches · 25/12/2025 17:24

SE and have had it with chicken or turkey since I was little and had it today, HM 😋

TheScottishPlay · 25/12/2025 17:25

I could eat a Christmas Dinner of sprouts, roasties and bread sauce. Love it.

Christmascaketime · 25/12/2025 17:25

Heard of it but never had it or made it.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/12/2025 17:26

I’ve heard of it but I’ve never eaten it and wouldn’t really know what goes into it or how to make it.

tothewindow25 · 25/12/2025 17:26

Heard of it, never had it or seen it or know what’s in it. Bread, presumably.

(if it’s anything like bread and butter pudding, I don’t want to know. That was a massive letdown when I had it and realised it was just soggy bread and butter with raisins Envy)

goodnesswhathappened · 25/12/2025 17:28

I love it and was probably weaned on it. It's also served with pheasant and grouse. So maybe not working class as a PP suggested?

tothewindow25 · 25/12/2025 17:28

Further to my previous post, I’m Scottish. So very surprised to see so many Scottish people having it!

I assumed it was an English thing

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/12/2025 17:29

I have heard of it but when we were younger we never had it, ditto pigs in blankets.

DB and SIL love it though and stepdad sometimes does it.

Radiator981 · 25/12/2025 17:29

Midlands and we have it with onion! Yummy

AliTheMinx · 25/12/2025 17:29

I've heard of it, but no idea what it is...

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/12/2025 17:31

Oh and I do have it sometimes when with DB and SIL.

Franjipanl8r · 25/12/2025 17:32

There’s no way that making bread into a sauce is ok. Doing that to bread is never ok.

(Also found out it existed as an adult and also from the SW).

I mean, fair enough, but — what do you imagine the texture to be like that it makes you feel ill? Genuinely curious

Topseyt123 · 25/12/2025 17:34

I've certainly heard of it. I'm from the Midlands but live in Essex now.

We never had it with Christmas Dinner or any other meal growing up. I don't have it now either. The only time I did have it was once when PILs made it, if I remember rightly. It was a very long time ago and I haven't had it since. It was OK, but nothing special.

vanillalattes · 25/12/2025 17:34

Pollqueen · 25/12/2025 16:55

It's not either or. You have bread sauce and gravy. Food of the Gods, love bread sauce

I've heard of it but never seen it served anywhere. It sounds horrible though!

Arran2024 · 25/12/2025 17:34

Scottish. We always had it and I love it but no one in my husband's London/Surrey family will touch it.
