People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

I’ve heard of it but we don’t have it on our dinners

catontheironingboard · 25/12/2025 23:54

My mum loves it so she has always made it if she’s doing any kind of poultry roast dinner. I don’t like it so we don’t have it when we do!

Lots of things look awful and taste great. Haggis, for example.

hakunamatata20 · 26/12/2025 00:00

I love bread sauce! My mum and dad always served it with Christmas dinner and they are from Lincolnshire/Midlands way. My husband from Merseyside had never heard if it.

I am now considering haggis with bread sauce. This is entirely your fault, Gasp0de.

Surrey here and I LOVE bread sauce and I actually have it with every roast I make 😂

I think it's a working class thing

Gasps

Nigella has it in her Christmas book!! Maybe it depends on the bread used?

Mother’s Pride – working class.
Warburtons – middle class by default.
50/50 – middle class but trying to be sensible.
Wholemeal – concerned about fibre.
Sourdough – aspiring middle class.
Artisan sourdough – upper middle in theory.
Rye – regretful.
Don't know or care - upper class.

Leapintothelightning · 26/12/2025 00:33

I’m Scottish and 33.
I have heard of it but have never had it and don’t actually know what it is! Definitely not a Christmas dinner staple in my family

DeepBlueDeer · 26/12/2025 00:43

Awful stuff.

hulahooper2 · 26/12/2025 00:45

scottish and heard of it but not particularly common here , tried it once and not particularly keen on it

SnowFrogJelly · 26/12/2025 01:18

YANBU we always had it with roast chicken growing up

Doingtheboxerbeat · 26/12/2025 01:23

It was something I never had growing up in the Midlands until a works Christmas dinner - I think I prefer to gravy actually.

Sounds great! Would be interested to hear your verdict.

TheBlueRobin · 26/12/2025 07:59

So my takeaway from this post - age, region or class dooesn't come into it. I think it's more about family tradition and you're more likely to enjoy it if you grew up with it?

Photo of my dinner below - pre gravy pouring!!!

No, it has to be white bread, not wholemeal nor rye.

Katiesaidthat · 26/12/2025 08:10

My mum´s family are from Wiltshire-Sussex and I have never heard of it. Sorry.

Itsseweasy · 26/12/2025 08:10

Southeast here and I literally look forward to Christmas roast dinner mainly for the bread sauce - I had 2/3 of a pot to myself this year 😅
It’s a longstanding joke with my husband that it’s the most important Christmas requirement but for some reason always the hardest to find. I didn’t realise it’s not as popular in every household as it is in mine!!

WAY easier to make than find!! It’s just made of stuff you already have in for the rest of the roast (plus bread obviously).

Simplelobsterhat · 26/12/2025 08:16

I'm Welsh and has never had it growing up. I think I'd vaguely heard of it. But dh (southeast England) always had it and once I had it with his family I liked it, so we always do it now. We've been together over 20 years so I kind of forget not everyone does now, until a friend expresses surprise. Dh makes his own as needs lactose free milk / cream. Love it

PlazaAthenee · 26/12/2025 08:24

I've heard of it but we never even had it while growing up, let alone now. Don't think my grandparents had it either.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 26/12/2025 08:43

I once caught my mum drinking it from the Pyrex glass jug she’d just made it in 😂
She’s the only one in the family who likes it, but who is that desperate for a bit of bread sauce?

CalzoneOnLegs · 26/12/2025 08:47

People send it to friends / family overseas so it is probably just a UK tradition

DD1 sees the bread sauce as the star of the show of Xmas dinner. The turkey is a mere side dish! She would drink it out of the jug, if it were the only way to get at it!
