People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

I’ve had it once in my life at a friend’s house. Grew up in the West Country, been in London for many years.

I’ve heard of it, but we’ve never had it at home and neither do my husband’s family. I have had it at work Christmas lunches and it was delicious though!

Heard of it, friends family used to have it but I’ve never had the urge to try it (midlands)

I tried it once and hated it, never had it growing up in SE, DH Mother used to make it, also SE. She is overall an awful cook by her own admission. I do the family Christmas dinner and she was delighted to pass it over. No bread sauce here, maybe I should have a go at making it.

Have heard of it. Never had it. 57 years old.

Bread sauce fits in my head in the same place as tripe, bread and dripping, faggots and tapioca pudding - archaic British pale/grey food that we collectively agreed as a nation to stop eating and never talk of again.

I come from an Irish family. We always had it, and that continues. I love it 😋

That’s interesting, my Irish grandmother (raised in Scotland, married to a Devonian) always made bread sauce with Sunday roast chicken and Christmas Day roast turkey, as did my mother, her daughter. I didn’t inherit a recipe but have used the Delia Smith one for donkey’s years and though it doesn’t look very appetising, is really tasty and definitely makes turkey better!

I'm in Scotland and I love it. It's non-negotiable for me for Christmas dinner, but DM and I are the only ones who like it. I do think that there's a generational element to it though.

I’d never heard of bread sauce until I read How to be a Domestic Goddess. I regularly made her bread sauce potatoes but didn’t make bread sauce for Christmas Dinner until about 6 years ago, I and two of my DC do. I don’t know anyone else who eats it though.

It's not either or. You have bread sauce and gravy. Food of the Gods, love bread sauce

Same. I can eat it on its own. Gorgeous stuff.

I’ve heard of it but never seen it in real life and I don’t know anyone who has it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Love bread sauce here, it's an essential part of Christmas. The smell of the milk infusing is so Christmassy.

CeffylCoch · 26/12/2025 10:41

I’ve heard of it but never tried it

BauhausOfEliott · 26/12/2025 10:43

Not regional. I don’t think many people bother with it these days. My grandmother used to make it apparently but my mum and dad didn’t.

Rosti1981 · 26/12/2025 10:55

I love it but my family do not, I couldn't find pre made this xmas (though tbh didn't try very hard) so I was bread sauceless (I looked up a recipe to make from scratch but it looked a bit faffy for one).
Cunk on Christmas has also put me off a little bit😂!
