People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

I would never make Christmas dinner without it. I used to make it a lot with roast chicken too but haven't done that for years now. From the south west.

I think it's a working class thing

😂

SollozzoMightNotBeInTheCarSonny · 25/12/2025 16:57

I’m in Scotland and I am aware of it but I haven’t tried it and I don’t know anyone who has it with their Christmas dinner.

TheBlueRobin · 25/12/2025 16:58

Someone who said it's a generational thing, I'm 32 🤣

I've heard of it but never tasted it.

Porkpieandmustard · 25/12/2025 16:59

Love bread sauce. We had it with our chicken today. I’m from London, DH from SE, my parents (who used to serve it with Christmas dinner) are Welsh.

Tacocat2 · 25/12/2025 17:00

I know what it is, but it’s pretty pointless! We were making Dinner this year so didn’t bother. My mum always makes it though.

ResusciAnnie · 25/12/2025 17:00

I’m from Somerset and yes, had bread sauce every Christmas of my life. Obvs!

AhBiscuits · 25/12/2025 17:01

I've only heard of it because DH insists on it. It's gross.

Well my 27 year old daughter was happily blitzing loaves of Lidl bread in the food processor yesterday and helping me infuse milk

Barneysmomma · 25/12/2025 17:03

Always had it growing up in Yorkshire but DH not keen (Scouser) so don't usually have it. Fancied some today with roast chicken but packets out of date (>2yrs!) so missing out. I know I can make it from scratch but no white bread in the house. Sad now...

Dartmoorcheffy · 25/12/2025 17:03

Im originally from Lancashire and had heard of it but we never had it growing up. DP is from London and its always been an integral part of Xmas dinner and I always make it now and love it.

BettysRoasties · 25/12/2025 17:04

I’ve no idea what bread sauce is or what it’s made from.

The words bread sauce don’t sound very appealing however. 30’s east anglia.

honeyfox · 25/12/2025 17:04

Irish and never had it.

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 25/12/2025 17:05

I’m in Scotland, and we love it. I didn’t grow up with it but DP introduced me to it as an adult. Had the M&S version today.

Hufflebuffs · 25/12/2025 17:06

Scottish and love it.

BlackCat14 · 25/12/2025 17:07

I’m from the north and have heard of it but don’t have it on Christmas Day. My boyfriend is originally from Dorset and he insists on it for not only Christmas dinner, but every Sunday roast!

Oh help don’t tell my mother that !!
Scotland here, I always make it as several family member love it, don’t like it personally . Nor do I like cranberry sauce or jam as I call it !
I do however love Brussels sprouts and parsnips !

RaininSummer · 25/12/2025 17:08

Heard of it but never seen it on anybody's table in many, many Christmases and never tried it. Southerner.

zzplee · 25/12/2025 16:49

I've heard of it but have never seen it in real life.

It's basically liquid bread which is as disgusting in real life as it sounds.

NappingThroughTheChaos · 25/12/2025 17:08

I’m the only one in my family who likes it but I insist on it for Christmas dinner 😊 It’s also great in a sandwich the day after 😋

scottishthistle77 · 25/12/2025 17:08

I’ve heard of it, but don’t know anyone who has it. I don’t think it’s a Scottish thing.

plumpunnet · 25/12/2025 17:08

It’s traditional part of Christmas dinner but we don’t like it so I don’t make it

Dearg · 25/12/2025 17:09

Another Scot here; never made it, would never eat it.

DH’s aunt complained once that it wasn’t on the table, so she was on the hook thereafter to bring it if she wanted it. No one else ate it.

Now, oatmeal stuffing, that’s the thing. With buckets of gravy.
