People who have never heard of bread sauce?

Sent a photo of my Christmas dinner to a friend. She asked what the white stuff was and whether it was horseradish.

I said 'No, bread sauce.'

She said she had never heard of it. Asked her family and they had never heard of it either.

Wonder it's a regional thing? Her family are from Somerset but also some from Lancashire. My partner is Welsh and never heard of it either. I'm from the Midlands.

I thought it was fairly universal? Dependent on preference ofc.

YABU - I've not heard of bread sauce /it's not a common thing.
YANBU - of course I've heard of it

LOVE bread sauce! It’s like the savoury version of custard - creamy bready goodness 🤤
Gravy, bread sauce and cranberry all must haves for me at Xmas

I’ve no idea what bread sauce is or what it’s made from.

The words bread sauce don’t sound very appealing however. 30’s east anglia.

Take a wild guess!
Breadcrumbs , milk infused with an onion stuffed with cloves, nutmeg, butter. Sort of bready mush .
Im not selling it to you am I !

Allthesnowallthetime · 25/12/2025 17:09

Always have it! (Scotland).

JustPlainStanfreyPock · 25/12/2025 17:09

Grew up in West Yorkshire and never had bread sauce at childhood Christmases. Vague memories of parents saying neither of them liked it, so maybe just personal choice. Have to say it doesn't sound very appetising, so am not at all tempted to try it.

FlippittyFlop · 25/12/2025 17:11

Never heard of it. Had to google it..

TheHateIsNotGood · 25/12/2025 17:11

Heard of it, don't have it - location non-specific just a personal preference.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 25/12/2025 17:12

Heard of it, watched James Martin Cook it on telly last week, his description of it being like porridge means it will never appear on a roast that I make or eat

Turnerskies · 25/12/2025 17:12

I make bread sauce every year. My late DM from Lancashire always made it. My DC and DGC like it. Most other people who I have cooked for on Xmas day do not like it.

It's basically liquid bread which is as disgusting in real life as it sounds.

Sounds just how I imagined. Why though is the question.

Yeah that’s not going anywhere near my food 😅

who on earth and why thought of that as something nice.

FOJN · 25/12/2025 17:14

I know what it is but thankfully have never seen it on a dinner plate. The whole idea of soggy, milky bread makes me heave.

HaveYouFedTheFish · 25/12/2025 17:14

I've heard of it but never eaten it.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 25/12/2025 17:14

I'm in Scotland and it's common here. I love it!

Disasterclass · 25/12/2025 17:14

Not sure it’s a working class thing. I grew up in the south east, working class parents, never heard of it until I met DP - middle class and from east England

MissConductUS · 25/12/2025 17:16

It’s completely unknown in the United States.

Winterburn · 25/12/2025 17:16

I’m northern and always known bread sauce. Though we don’t often have it. I’d recently mentioned it to my mum saying we’d not had it for ages so we had it on our Xmas dinner today, weirdly. And my DP, who is from the same town as me, had never tried it before?! I was incredulous! He’s quite a bit older than me and will eat pretty much anything so very surprised he’d never had it!!

Yeah that would make anyone heave! Thankfully bread sauce is nothing like that.

I think it's a working class thing

It's absolutely not. You'll find it on the menu in every truly "posh" house in the country. The difference is that it's not seen as just a Christmas thing.

Coffeebeforework · 25/12/2025 17:17

Hufflebuffs · 25/12/2025 17:06

Scottish and love it.

Me too! Integral part of Christmas meal.

RainbowBagels · 25/12/2025 17:18

YesSirICanNameChange · 25/12/2025 17:18

Heard of it, but have no idea what it actually is, looks like, tastes like etc.

Early 30s, Wales.

VintageKnittingPattern · 25/12/2025 17:18

Scottish. Essential part of Christmas dinner.

Same. Never been on any Christmas dinner I've had

luckylavender · 25/12/2025 17:19

I’m from Wales & had never heard of it until I met my husband from Kent. Never tried it though.
