Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

It's not that strong ... not like drinking half a bottle of brandy or whisky.

Well it is whisky based. Admittedly it’s only 17% (just googled it) but still strong enough than half a bottle would make you feel ropey. Especially if it were a 1l bottle as these tend to be the size people end up with in their cupboard.

OrlandointheWilderness · 18/12/2025 11:41

I’ve had a mouthful of off baileys - it had curdled and was like off cream. Absolutely no mistaking it was off!!! I suspect this is fine.

JustMe2026 · 18/12/2025 11:44

I adore baileys always got some in the house but wow half a bottle like it's an alcopop is not what you do with it 🤣 I think even the best alcoholic would feel sick after half a bottle lol

ChaChaChaChanges · 18/12/2025 11:54

Seriously half a bottle?

WickedGoodDoge · 18/12/2025 11:56

I’ve drunk Baileys that has been years out and it was fine. I figured if if had gone off I’d be able to tell.

narkyspirit · 18/12/2025 11:57

If I drank half a bottle of baileys I'd have been on the loo most of the night, more likely to be the quantity you had rather than the age of it

FletchFan · 18/12/2025 11:58

Speaking of Baileys, I've got a bottle I bought last year which is opened.
Still ok to drink? I suppose I would know

MyDeftDuck · 18/12/2025 11:59

I’m watching this thread………I have a bottle of Baileys that’s three years out of date (won it in a raffle last year 😱😱) and I keep putting off opening it! Waiting to see what happens to the OP before indulging but tbh I’m not a fan of it.

MyDeftDuck · 18/12/2025 12:01

And I’m also puzzled…….how do you ‘accidentally’ drink something 🤔🤔🤣🤣

When Baileys goes off, the cream goes bad - so it would become lumpy and vile. We had one years old that went off - it came out in lumps. We didn't try to drink it!

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 18/12/2025 12:01

That's like drinking a pint of cream... blurgh.

FootpathNameChange · 18/12/2025 12:02

Thank you all I think half a bottle was an exaggeration but I did have a fair bit (I think about 5 units?). I thought you were meant to drink it like wine 😂

Stomach is definitely a little ropey today hence why I checked but I'm relieved to hear I won't end up with full food poisoning!

Yes my grandma has one of those cupboards in her dining room filled with booze she never drinks so I bet she got it from there 😂

It's the volume of cream not alcohol that is going to make her sick.

ThatBlackCat · 18/12/2025 12:03

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

I once checked a couple of years ago and their website said 2 years opened or unopened. But that's just a best before, you'd know by smell and taste if it was off.

I drank the Bailey's on purpose but didn't realise it was out of date. I thought she'd bought me a new bottle. I usually am too much of a wimp to eat something even a day out of date, definitely wouldn't have risked it.

You are most definitely not supposed to drink it like wine. My friend and I drank a one litre bottle between us and thought I was going to die the next day

Iocanepowder · 18/12/2025 12:05

Yes i would agree that is it the volume you drank.

It is actually quite a rich drink. Like drinking cream with booze in it. So not surprised you feel off.

I drank from an opened, 20 year old bottle of Dooley’s (toffee version of Bailey’s). It was fine. It doesn’t really expire. You’re worrying over nothing.

I used to love Dooleys! That should make a comeback!

I usually only drink wine, never spirits. I think I thought it was like buying a pre-mixed cocktail? I won't be trying any again I'm traumatized 😂

What's this madness? I've never seen anyone mix it with milk. Coffee at a push. Or various other drinks in cocktails. But never milk. "Supposed to" my arse.

Happyjoe · 18/12/2025 12:07

It goes lumpy if off..
Worst hangover I ever had was on Baileys, drank a bottle during a lock-in while visiting friends in Dublin. I think it's probably the quantity not the quality!

I've never put milk in it but it's nice added to coffee.
