AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

Fuck me, half a bottle? That is why you feel shit, Jesus...

Bigcat25 · 18/12/2025 12:11

Will you tell your grandmother how out of date it is? I would, she's kinda screwed you over.

FunPeachCrab · 18/12/2025 12:12

This reminds me of back in my drinking days in my early 20s when I went to a dinner party where only wine was served and I was usually a Fosters lager drinker.

I got absolutely smashed and was a bit bewildered by it till someone pointed out you can't knock back wine like it's lager because it's a much higher alcohol content...

EstherGreenwood63 · 18/12/2025 12:12

MIL fed me years out of date Baileys one NYE. I survived...

OrlandointheWilderness · 18/12/2025 12:12

I’m not a huge drinker these days but tbh I can drink baileys like wine! Never gives me a hangover and I only drink it in December. I must be odd 😂

Oh no, she's nearly 90 and grew up in the war and hates waste. She wouldn't have thought for a second she might make me sick.

You feel sick because you drank half a bottle of cream and alcohol at once.

It’s fine, if it was off you’d have smelt it.

Funnywonder · 18/12/2025 12:15

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Topped up with milk? I hope you’re not Irish🤣

I have had a White Russian though, made with vodka, coffee liqueur and cream or milk. Rather lovely it is too.

Evaka · 18/12/2025 12:16

Best before just means a product loses quality after that date, not that it becomes dangerous!

Agree half a bottle is insane - it's potent as fuck and crammed with sugar.

You're hungover OP.

You really aren't supposed to top Baileys up with milk. I mean, do it if that’s what you like, but it’s not usual.

Same here.... it's not got massively more alcohol than a lot of wines either 🤷‍♀️

A neighbour brought some out to our street party a few years ago. We had quite a few shots until my next door neighbour noticed it was curdled, so she checked the date and yes, it was quite out of date and had probably been open for yonks. It was then left out on my drive in the sun for most of the next day, until my neighbour collected it. Trouble is, it now comes out again at every street party we have and we all have to politely swerve it 🫣

UxmalFan · 18/12/2025 12:20

Half a bottle of Baileys? No wonder you feel ill.
Hopefully you'll be fine, but if not take some bicarbonate of soda and be ready to go and A and E if you start to feel terrible. Fingers crossed.

I think drinking half a bottle of Baileys is the reason you feel sick, regardless of the expiry.

I know! I can’t imagine how sick I would feel after that much 😳

You aren't 'supposed' to top up with milk. It's just an option, and one I'd never do. It's already rich enough with the cream to then add more dairy, plus it would water down the flavour. I prefer it over ice in a normal tumbler, defintely not a tiny bit in a small glass!

Lazygardener · 18/12/2025 12:23

If it tasted ok, it probably was. Half a bottle would make you feel sick if it had been bought yesterday!

I could easily drink half a bottle of baileys with zero issues

I didn't know it is the done thing to top it up with milk. Don't think I would like it like that. It is nice in coffee instead of milk though a bit sweet.

FrenchandSaunders · 18/12/2025 12:26

Top up with milk .... good grief 😂

Radiatorvalves · 18/12/2025 12:26

Feeling sick at the thought of half a bottle of Baileys. 🤢

GasPanic · 18/12/2025 12:28

If you buy a new bottle and drink half of that, you'll effectively have consumed Baileys only 3 years old.

I don't know anyone who dilute a liqueur with milk. Maybe with another spirit to turn it into a cocktail. I would feel sick as a dog after several glasses of milk with or without Baileys in it. Bleurgh!

andthat · 18/12/2025 12:28

You feel sick because you're hungover. Have a fry up and you'll be fine...

HoneyParsnipSoup · 18/12/2025 12:28

Baileys is only slightly stronger than wine. If OP had drank a bottle of wine, nobody would be saying ‘FUCK ME OMG THATS SO MUCH’
