Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

I think drinking half a bottle of Baileys is the reason you feel sick, regardless of the expiry.

vanillalattes · 18/12/2025 11:24

I very much doubt you’re going to get sick from out of date Baileys - it’s much more likely to be because you had half a bottle of the stuff 😂.

crumpet · 18/12/2025 11:24

You’ll be fine. Good luck, ride out any discomfort and it will soon pass.

Nervousbuilder · 18/12/2025 11:24

If it was unopened I’d imagine you feel sick because you drank half a bottle of baileys.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 18/12/2025 11:24

You'll be fine. We cleared out my grandma's booze cupboard and drunk a load of it that was about 15years out of date. No ill effects.

I was going to say the same thing!

CurlewKate · 18/12/2025 11:25

More likely to be the quantity eater than the age…..

purplecorkheart · 18/12/2025 11:25

It is Best Before rather than Use By. If the bottle was sealed you should be fine. I would imagine if it was gone off it would have curdled.

SparkleSpriteDust · 18/12/2025 11:25

I imagine there's enough alcohol in there to preserve it.

Love the fact that your Grandma has had it for 6 years!

You'll be fine.

ilparadodosdoltos · 18/12/2025 11:25

It’s a ‘Best Before’ date, which is not quite the same thing. Just means ‘if it tastes a bit stale, don’t blame us’. You’ll be fine.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 18/12/2025 11:26

We accidentally drank baileys that was 10 years OOD. It was given to us by someone who was clearing out their drinks cupboard and we didn't check.

We only drank a couple of glasses each, and had the shits the following day, but otherwise all good.

GentleSheep · 18/12/2025 11:26

Half a bottle of Baileys would make a lot of people sick! It's got a high alcohol content and.. yeah. Keep well hydrated!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/12/2025 11:26

Alcohol is a preservative. I very much doubt that you could get ill from out-of-date alcohol. How many people have finally broken into a bottle of that sticky stuff that they brought back from holiday a decade ago, in desperation?

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 18/12/2025 11:29

How long do folks think it’s OK for once it’s been opened ?

MidnightPatrol · 18/12/2025 11:31

Such a grandparent move to give you things out of their cupboards several years out of date..!

I think if you’ve woken up fine, you probably can assume no ill effects.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/12/2025 11:31

lol at putting ‘half a bottle’ of baileys as if that’s a normal amount to drink!! I’d be in hospital!

randomchap · 18/12/2025 11:32

As long as it hadn't curdled you'll be fine.

Half a bottle would make most people rough

Fairyliz · 18/12/2025 11:33

If it’s gone off it curdles.
Speaking from experience when I poured out a glass from a bottle that had been opened a while and it was all thick lumps.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/12/2025 11:33

A friend used to work for a wine company and they were forever getting complaints that ‘their head hurt after drinking this bottle’

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 18/12/2025 11:35

Half a bottle of Bailey's? Blimey. You have a hangover.

I always think the alcohol in these things preserves them. I've drunk 4 year old Bailey's that's been left open.

Funnywonder · 18/12/2025 11:36

I love Baileys but I would be sick as a dog if I drank half a bottle😅 Was the lid sealed? I think if it has been opened you’re supposed to use it within a certain length of time. Even then, I can’t imagine you’d come to much harm. Hope you’re ok.

FrenchandSaunders · 18/12/2025 11:38

It's not that strong ... not like drinking half a bottle of brandy or whisky.

Tillow4ever · 18/12/2025 11:39

I drank from an opened, 20 year old bottle of Dooley’s (toffee version of Bailey’s). It was fine. It doesn’t really expire. You’re worrying over nothing.

TheKeatingFive · 18/12/2025 11:39

You'll be fine 😂

lcakethereforeIam · 18/12/2025 11:41

That's a 'best before' not a 'use by'. That means the quality may deteriorate but it should still be safe.
