Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

Half a bottle of baileys is quite crazy, to be honest!
That, on its own would make you feel sick.
Also, if you mixed it with anything else, sometimes it does not ho down well at all.
Do you have a fever? Are you throwing up or have diahrrea? The dairy could have gone bad indeed. And you should go the doctor asap if there is any fever, rash or stomach issues.

Baileys is almost twice as strong as wine, so basically you drank a whole bottle of wine to yourself last night. No wonder you feel sick. It's not milkshake.

Its 17%. Most reds are about 12% (and many higher, up to 15%) so no, not twice as strong. Hardly stronger at all.

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Are you Australian? My brother told me to top Baileys with milk after he visited some friends there.

InterestedDad37 · 18/12/2025 13:07

Think of it like this: whatever illness you may develop, any bug or germ will be 6 years old, and they've probably found a cure for it by now 🙂

Top it up with milk??? I’ve never heard that. Sounds disgusting. I drink it with ice. Never milk! I’ve had it in coffee too which is nice. And my sister likes it with a small amount of brandy. Which I think is over egging the pudding quite frankly! But milk is a new one on me!

That, on it's own, would not make everyone feel sick. Wouldn't make me feel sick

I think she would have known if the dairy element had gone bad - there is little that is quite as disgusting as off cream! And you'd never get half a bottle of it down your neck.

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 18/12/2025 13:10

Darling you are hungover. Nothing more.

Drink the other half. Everyone knows hair of the dog is the cure 😊

vickylou78 · 18/12/2025 13:11

It's a best before date not a use by. Are you saying you drank 500ml of Bailey's in one go??? If so you've got a hangover!!!

In which universe do you add milk to baileys? 50ml is a standard pub measured. You can also drink as much as you like there is no rules apart from for your general health.
Baileys is 17%, so a fair bit stronger than a stong red wine (about 14%)

Dery · 18/12/2025 13:14

I had one of my worst ever hangovers from Baileys. Felt appalling for most of a day. It lulls you into a false sense of security because (for me, anyway) it’s such a delicious drink that slips down so easily but actually it’s rather strong! Still drinking it occasionally but much more circumspectly. Never had it with milk but it does sometimes appear on menus in coffee so I can see how that might work.

vickylou78 · 18/12/2025 13:15

Ps. 50ml is standard pub measure so you've drank 10 pub servings of Bailey's in one evening. That's good going!!
Assuming the bottle is 1L.

Vinvertebrate · 18/12/2025 13:15

The idea of mixing Baileys with milk is giving me the vapours.

Everyone knows the only way to drink Baileys is to glug it out of a pint glass full of ice.

As for the OP - I've got bottles of Baileys that are older than DS9 and they're still perfectly quaffable - you'll be fine.

vickylou78 · 18/12/2025 13:16

Agree with others, the date is best before so totally fine to drink even if it's a little old.

What's this madness? I've never seen anyone mix it with milk. Coffee at a push. Or various other drinks in cocktails. But never milk. "Supposed to" my arse.

Google Dom Pedro and thank me later. 😊

But just in case you'de rather not, the liqueur is added to vanilla ice cream and blended.

I always have this rather than a dessert if eating out.

We have different brands of liqueur but the basis is the same.

FallingDownARabbitHole · 18/12/2025 13:18

Baileys is usually served as 25/50 mls served over a glass of ice. Half of your bottle would be 7 50ml shots. No wonder you are sick 😂

Starlight1984 · 18/12/2025 13:19

HoneyParsnipSoup · 18/12/2025 12:28

Baileys is only slightly stronger than wine. If OP had drank a bottle of wine, nobody would be saying ‘FUCK ME OMG THATS SO MUCH’

This!

A 700ml bottle of Baileys is 12 units. A bottle of red wine is around 10 units. So the OP effectively drunk 3 medium glasses of red wine (if that). Not sure why everyone is so outraged 😂

Mind you it is MN....

Renamed · 18/12/2025 13:20

I’ve just checked and as well as 17% alcohol it is about 14% fat and 18% sugar - so maybe it is not so much because of the 5.95 units (about 3 double brandys) as it being all mixed with 2 tbs cream and 3 tbs sugar - rich stuff

BettysRoasties · 18/12/2025 13:21

Looks like it’s fine. I can drink but baileys always makes me feel icky even a small glass of the stuff.

Are you Australian? My brother told me to top Baileys with milk after he visited some friends there.

Yes, I am Australian.

I've never known any different. I was always taught an inch of Baileys in a glass, and the rest of the glass milk. That that is the proper way to drink it. It's like an inch of rum, and the rest coke.

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 18/12/2025 13:23

Baileys is 17%

Red wine these days is usually 12-14%

Not anywhere near twice as strong

Mangelwurzelfortea · 18/12/2025 13:25

Baileys is delicious but apart from anything else, half a bottle is approximately 8 billion calories. It's like drinking an entire carton of cream and anyone would feel a bit sick after that.

Edited

It isn't like rum and coke at all 😂

It's topping up a rich, creamy drink with milk. I don't have a dairy intolerance but I think that would send even me running for the loo😆

Peridot1 · 18/12/2025 13:25

Well you have shocked a lot of us with that @ThatBlackCat!

What absolute nonsense is this?! 🤔

I could drink a whole bottle of Bailey's, it would hardly touch the sides 😆

Are you mixing it up with Amaretto? Which is lovely with milk.

I thought this too - but I thought kahlua, not amaretto. Kahlua and milk used to be a thing, like a mildly alcoholic milkshake!
