Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

Won’t repeat what everyone else said about the amount you drank but to a PP - who the hell tops up Bailey’s with milk?
you pour it over ice or into coffee maybe.

Bunchymcbunchface · 19/12/2025 18:46

I are Bailey cream that was 2 years out of date (hidden at back of fridge behind some horse drugs)

it was fine

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 19/12/2025 18:52

You may not feel the best for a couole iof days. But l reckon you will live!

Very naughty lady!

What I want to know is whether @ThatBlackCat is ready to investigate new ways of drinking Bailey’s?

URRRGGGHH! I wish I had never said anything now. I don't drink Baileys. Tried it a couple of times, and am not a big fan of it. It is my mum that drinks it (like maybe once or twice a year she'll get a bottle). Since she and family friends and friends of hers always serve it with like an inch or 2 in a glass and the rest with milk, I just assumed that was the normal way. It's the only way I've ever seen anyone drink it. Even friends she hardly sees. They bring out home-made Baileys and always have it with milk (like an alcoholic milk drink). I have never known any different. Until yesterday, it never occurred to me my mum was weird with that.

But it appears my mum is weird. The question is; should I tell her? Like, if/when she gets a bottle for Christmas next week when she gets the drinks in? Should I tell her? Or let her live in blissful ignorance? What say you people?

😳

MsOtisReflects · 19/12/2025 19:03

Just pour her a glass (not tiny, not with milk!) and see how she likes it?

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 19/12/2025 19:04

I drank some that had been opened too long the other week. I got the shits. That’s probably the worse that will happen though you’ll live!

I'm intrigued by you saying "homemade Baileys".
Baileys is basically whiskey with cream (and some flavouring).
So if your mums friends are diluting homemade Baileys with milk, maybe they're just diluting whiskey!

Laura95167 · 19/12/2025 20:07

In my experience its fine as long as it hasnt been open 6 years.

Half a bottle will make you feel rough though

RavenhairedRachel · 19/12/2025 20:48

I think anyone would feel sick drinking half a bottle of baileys

BettysRoasties · 19/12/2025 20:52

Crochetandtea · 19/12/2025 00:30

I drank some out of date baileys once too. I died!

But were you dead dead or just dead ☠️

MsOtisReflects · 19/12/2025 20:56

It’s good to know the Internet exists in the afterlife. I’ll be able to catch up with all the books I hadn’t yet had time for.

How long do folks think it’s OK for once it’s been opened ?

10 minutes

I used to love Dooleys! That should make a comeback!

I was thinking the same! You can get it on amazon

Oh My GoD hAlF a BoTtLe Of BaIlEyS yOu AlCo!

... it's 4.7 standard drinks people. You can stop clutching your pearls.

I know, I barely even drink and it does t seem that much to me 🤣 it's probably the richness/cream.. I ate a tub of baileys extra thick cream within 24 hours and felt awful haha

GooseberryGreen · 19/12/2025 22:21

You downed a fair amount of Irish whiskey which is likely why you feel sick. I have never heard of people dousing it with milk. I mean it's a liqueur for heaven's sake - it's meant to be sipped in smallish quantities. I don't think the milk is a Southern Hemisphere thing - my family is Irish and I grew up in New Zealand and I have never seen it served in a glass of milk.

Granddama · 19/12/2025 22:31

You're probably hung over!

MySilentLions · 19/12/2025 23:15

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2025 18:23

Same. It melts

you wouldn’t add water to wine - gin - baileys etc so why

add ice to drinks

You’re obviously drinking too slowly if all the ice is melting Grin

I bought my usual Christmas purchase of Bailey's custard the other day, thinking I'll enjoy that for dessert for a couple of nights... but nope, finished it in one sitting 🤣

Would seem so 😂

the ice gets it the way

I was drinking at home so just dead if I’d been out out I’d have been dead dead. Huge relief!

Peridot1 · 20/12/2025 13:34

@ThatBlackCat - yep you need to tell your Mum she’s weird! I’m not surprised you weren’t keen on it if that’s how you had it. You can tell your Mum she’s weird caused more consternation than the out of date Baileys did.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/12/2025 11:31

lol at putting ‘half a bottle’ of baileys as if that’s a normal amount to drink!! I’d be in hospital!

What silly hyperbole. It’s 17% ABV. Very similar to some wines.

YearOfTheDrizzle · 20/12/2025 14:55

GlasgowGal2014 · 19/12/2025 15:45

I don't know how you work that out! Baileys has 17% alcohol (you can see that on the picture posted by OP). A typical white wine has 12.5-14.5% and a strong red might have up to 16%. You might find a port at 17%, but some go up to 22% and a sherry is typically around 20%. There's an awful lot of unnecessary tearing out of hair going on in a thread about a reasonably mild alcohol.

Many red wines have 14-18% ABV.

Someone drinking two large glasses of red wine (half a bottle) is hardly a wild party animal, and it is certainly is not an amount of alcohol that a normal person would expect to mean that they “end up in hospital” as a PP suggested. 🙄🙄

I totally agree - I find all the pearl clutching on this thread about someone drinking half a bottle of Baileys quite baffling! Almost as baffling as the poster whose mother makes her own Baileys and then tops it up with milk!

BigFenianEnergy · 21/12/2025 14:15

@FootpathNameChange no posts since the Christmas mass. Are you ok or were there indeed ill effects?

I detest baileys. The smell makes me feel sick but I also don’t think half a bottle is as crazy as others are suggesting but I did learn this weekend that it’s sold in 50ml shots (which is in line with the pearl clutches) and some pubs are using 25ml measures as they don’t know. Diabolical.
