Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk.

What's this madness? I've never seen anyone mix it with milk. Coffee at a push. Or various other drinks in cocktails. But never milk. "Supposed to" my arse.

This! Never drunk it topped up with milk in my life! Yuk!

LadyGrillingSole · 18/12/2025 12:31

I thought the normal way of drinking Bailey's was in a mug ( with ice if you're being fancy 😂)...

Just my family, then?

You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Topped up with milk? You wot?? 🤢

We do whiskey tumble over ice, about 3/4 of a glass.

203percent · 18/12/2025 12:34

You'll be fine OP.
As PP said - best before so it'd be a quality issue that made it undrinkable, not bacterial growth which makes it harmful.

It can't have tasted too bad if you managed half a bottle 🤣

SquadOfSquid · 18/12/2025 12:35

I particularly enjoy the OP's comment of "did you live?" as if the ghosts of overexcited expired Bailey's drinkers might respond 😅

What absolute nonsense is this?! 🤔

I could drink a whole bottle of Bailey's, it would hardly touch the sides 😆

Are you mixing it up with Amaretto? Which is lovely with milk.

NemesisInferior · 18/12/2025 12:36

You'll be feeling sick because you drank half a bottle of cream with alcohol in it 😂

If it was off it would have smelt off and gone lumpy like milk does.

ByWisePanda · 18/12/2025 12:39

You drank it straight you daredevil. In future here is some fun mixes you can try.

Oh no, she's nearly 90 and grew up in the war and hates waste. She wouldn't have thought for a second she might make me sick.

I see. It is very nice in coffee if you can ever stomach having it again.

Baileys is only slightly stronger than wine. If OP had drank a bottle of wine, nobody would be saying ‘FUCK ME OMG THATS SO MUCH’

They probably would on MN tbh. Anything more than a thimble full of sherry at Christmas means you're an alcoholic

Where on earth did you get the idea that you're supposed to have a 'tiny bit of Bailey's topped up with milk'?

didgeridid · 18/12/2025 12:41

You would know if you made your self poorly from something that had gone off. Actual food poisoning is horrid too out it lightly.
It's just a best before which means it may not be at ours best but will be fine. I would use it as an excuse to polish off the rest myself 🤣

VikaOlson · 18/12/2025 12:42

It's best before not an expiry date, so I'm sure it's safe - was it a sealed bottle?

I was actually thinking 5 units is nothing why do these people think I'm hungover?

I’m so glad a few other people have appeared and I don’t look like the only raging Christmas alcoholic…! 😂
in a whiskey tumbler here, neat.

MayaPinion · 18/12/2025 12:43

It’s 17% so stronger than wine. No wonder yo feel rough!

Anonanonay · 18/12/2025 12:44

Alcohol is a preservative. Stop worrying.

anyolddinosaur · 18/12/2025 12:44

Baileys is 17% and white wine could be as low as 11% so it may be quite a bit stronger than she is used to. Also it can enhance the side effects of weight loss medication so if she was using that it might also make her feel sicker.

I'd put it in the fridge now its open if it's age worries you.

Hicupping · 18/12/2025 12:44

I'm sure you'll be fine. This might be a grandma thing 30 years ago mine did this same but it had been sitting in a warm cupboard for god knows how long and came out like cottage cheese.

And why do you think shes lived so long?

HoneyParsnipSoup · 18/12/2025 12:45

PMSL that the general consensus is that the equivalent of 3 glasses of wine would ‘make you sick, give you a raging hangover, not surprised you feel so unwell’

What a puritanical thread!

Bikergran · 18/12/2025 12:46

Baileys is almost twice as strong as wine, so basically you drank a whole bottle of wine to yourself last night. No wonder you feel sick. It's not milkshake.

Itsasecretnow · 18/12/2025 12:46

FootpathNameChange · 18/12/2025 12:02

Thank you all I think half a bottle was an exaggeration but I did have a fair bit (I think about 5 units?). I thought you were meant to drink it like wine 😂

Stomach is definitely a little ropey today hence why I checked but I'm relieved to hear I won't end up with full food poisoning!

Yes my grandma has one of those cupboards in her dining room filled with booze she never drinks so I bet she got it from there 😂

I think if you were drinking it like wine you probably had a bit more than 5 units! Whether or not you were drunk/tipsy and/or hungover I think drinking that volume of a drink like Bailey’s is likely to leave you feeling a bit nauseous afterwards, more so than it being out of date. I mean, I get you, when I had ood baileys it was all rather dramatic and traumatising, it was touch and go for a while!!* Lived to tell the tale. Hope that doesn’t panic you too much tho..

*Except, not really. I was obviously absolutely fine and nothing happened at all 😆 and I’m also lactose intolerant 🤭
I admire your ability to be able to drink that much in that quantity tho, it’s waaay too rich to be drinking like that! Try it with a shot of espresso. But maybe just a small amount this time! It tastes amazing.
