Accidentally drank Bailey's that expired 6 years ago!

AIBU to be freaking out?

Please can anyone tell me if they've done this? I'm meant to be hosting Christmas for 12 and I'm scared!

My grandma gave me a bottle of Bailey's when I visited her yesterday. I drank half last night and it tasted fine but I've never tried it before so I'm not sure what it should taste like.

Today I'm feeling really sick, I checked the bottle and realised it expired in 2019. It must have been one she had in the back of her cupboard.

Has this happened to anyone? Did you live?

Baileys is 17% and white wine could be as low as 11% so it may be quite a bit stronger than she is used to. Also it can enhance the side effects of weight loss medication so if she was using that it might also make her feel sicker.

I'd put it in the fridge now its open if it's age worries you.

It needs to go. Way too old.

Yellowingtrees · 18/12/2025 12:47

You've basically drunk 5 glasses of cream - that may be why you feel rubbish? It's really rich!

HoneyParsnipSoup · 18/12/2025 12:48

Bikergran · 18/12/2025 12:46

Baileys is almost twice as strong as wine, so basically you drank a whole bottle of wine to yourself last night. No wonder you feel sick. It's not milkshake.

Wine is 11-14%

Baileys is 17%

In what world is half of 17, 11?! Or more.

OP has had the equivalent of 2.5 or 3 glasses of wine, at most.

The hysterical Puritanism here is hilarious

Squirrel60 · 18/12/2025 12:48

I love Baileys, have got a bottle + a Baileys Terry's Chocolate Orange! But 6 years out of date might well make you sick, as the dairy in it will spoil, and it only has a 2-year shelf date.

Yes. I drank some at the end of Christmas one year and felt sick and.eventuslly was.sick. It' s got cream in it I believe ( ?) and has a short shelf life imo..The cap of the bottle I drank from was a bit dirty from what I assume was the dried out cream and I guess it had attracted germs. Maybe drink lots of water to try to flush it out ??

youarebeingsoextrarightnow · 18/12/2025 12:49

Was there any lumps in it or was it curdled, if not you will be fine, if it did it could be something to do with the cream and you may spend some time in the bathroom

ThatBlackCat · 18/12/2025 12:03

You're only supposed to have 2 or 3 very small glasses of it with a tiny bit in, the rest topped up with milk. You feel sick because you are hang over from drinking half a bottle of baileys with a fifth to a quarter of a bottle is more than enough in one sitting. I hope you don't also drink half a bottle of vodka, too, and then wonder why you felt sick?

Well played @ThatBlackCat. You’re being sarcastic right?

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 18/12/2025 12:49

When my Mum died in 2015 we found a bottle of whisky in the cupboard which had been opened on 30/12/1960 and it was fine. Mum always wrote the date on items she opened or bought for some reason.
There was also a Xmas cake in the freezer from 1997. Dad ate it and said it ok but the sugar had crystallised a bit.

I mean for a dairy item to last 2 years there has to be a LOT of preservatives and there is (the alcohol). Proper dairy items only last a week or two.

PMSL that the general consensus is that the equivalent of 3 glasses of wine would ‘make you sick, give you a raging hangover, not surprised you feel so unwell’

What a puritanical thread!

I can easily drink three glasses of wine, but the equivalent amount of Baileys is pretty sickening with all the cream and sweetness. For me it’s more about that than the amount of alcohol. Also, the type of alcohol makes a difference. White wine, I’m fine (wee poem there😃) but with red wine or spirits I feel awful the next day.

Itsasecretnow · 18/12/2025 12:52

FootpathNameChange · 18/12/2025 12:10

No lumps thank god!

Oh, yeah it’s not meant to be that colour, definitely tell you’re a baileys virgin if you drunk that 😂
does alcohol generally get stronger the older it is? If so might mean you had a bit more alcohol than you thought, which also might explain feeling sick (hungover).
Anyway, RIP Bailey! Your time on this earth was long, but once finally unleashed you had mere moments. She will never forget you, go in peace.

myhaggisblewup · 18/12/2025 12:52

!/2 a bottle of Baileys? Blimey a glass of wine and I'm tipsy, 2 I'm under the table and 3 I would be under the bar tender😁! I'm such a light weight in more ways than one, being teetotal probably doesn't help though.😆

GasPanic · 18/12/2025 12:53

Redpeach · 18/12/2025 12:44

And why do you think shes lived so long?

Because she gives away stuff that is likely to make her ill to other people ?

Tillow4ever · 18/12/2025 12:53

Blarn · 18/12/2025 12:05

I used to love Dooleys! That should make a comeback!

@Blarn you can still get it. A couple of years ago it was in B&M, you can get it from Amazon though - not seen it in B&M this year! Bloody lovely drink!

butterdish93 · 18/12/2025 12:54

Baileys doesn’t go off. Even if it’s opened. You’re good! You just had too much to drink haha but that’s fine… it’s Christmas! X

I usually only drink wine, never spirits. I think I thought it was like buying a pre-mixed cocktail? I won't be trying any again I'm traumatized 😂

OP give the hyperbole a rest. You weren’t traumatised.

arethereanyleftatall · 18/12/2025 11:31

lol at putting ‘half a bottle’ of baileys as if that’s a normal amount to drink!! I’d be in hospital!

I wouldn’t say it’s an unusual amount if you’re making a night of it. Baileys is only 17% so a half bottle probably the equivalent of around 3/4 of a bottle of wine.

ByWisePanda · 18/12/2025 12:56

FootpathNameChange · 18/12/2025 12:42

I was actually thinking 5 units is nothing why do these people think I'm hungover?

They think you're a light weight.

Calliopespa · 18/12/2025 12:58

It's the volume not the elderly-ness of it op!

The alcohol would preserve things quite well - and make you feel ill today in that quantity!

Baileys topped up with milk?? How odd.

How long do folks think it’s OK for once it’s been opened ?

A hell of a long time! I don't drink alcohol as such but use it in cooking so Baileys cheesecake/truffles/buttercream etc but I don't make these often so could have an open bottle in the press for years, I don't refrigerate it either. Never yet had one go 'off', made my Baileys truffles for Christmas couple of days ago with some I'm sure vintage Baileys! All good.

OP you drank half a bottle of the stuff, no wonder you feel sick, that's not the way to do it!

What? You certainly do not top Baileys up with milk!

kalokagathos · 18/12/2025 13:00

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Don’t drink half a bottle of sweet alcohol, it will give you a stinking headache, child

The photo of you holding it clearly says 2 - 3 units for women.

You won't die but I'd be feeling peaky after half a bottle!
