Has Reeves hit a new low- saying it's misogyny?

Christmaspuddingsss · 25/11/2025 07:59

I couldn't believe I was reading this today.

She accuses her critics of being against her budget plans because she is a woman. (But ignores the number of U turns she's done because of the criticism from back benchers)

Using the 'misogyny' card is really desperate IMO.

Rayner caused her own downfall by either being lazy or attempting to evade tax.

Her woes are all on her, no one else.

Sexism obviously exists but it's irritating when it's thrown out like this. Reminds me of when Nicoa Sturgeon accused those against housing the male rapist in a women's prison of being 'transphobic, homophobic...and probably racist.' Like just throw it all at the wall and see what sticks.

90% of politicians are raging hypocrites, especially labour politicians, I’m sure reeves has plenty of skeletons in her closet.

Someone kept leaking Angela’s private business and my bet is on reeves. Pure jealousy and spite

With a PPE degree from Oxford, a Master’s in Economics from the LSE, and six years as an economist at the Bank of England, Reeves is hardly underqualified - in fact she's better qualified than most of her male predecessors. I'm not the biggest fan of the government, but by concentrating on infrastructure (see Oxford-Cambridge Growth corridor, acceleration of house-building), education, and industrial strategy she has managed to combine broadly progressive policies (freezing rail fares and prescription charges during cost of living crunch, increasing green investment), with fiscal prudence (no reckless borrowing or unfunded tax cuts). As the markets have responded broadly positively in terms of investment and stabilisation of the bond markets, I do think the term 'Rachel for accounts' is a very gendered way of undermining her technical abilities.

Then why is the economy in the shits then?

I think Rishi Sunak was very qualified as chancellor. And actually had real world industry experience in finance. He led the country well in number 10 and number 11

She has an MSc from LSE. That makes her a trained economist.

Nope.

It means she has done a one year MSc in economics. I.e. reading some books and writing a baby thesis.

Then she worked as a graduate trainee for BoE.

That's a significant difference to being a trained economist.

I did three degrees and have 30 years experience in one of those fields. That's the level of training and experience necessary to lead activities.

I dont even mind that she's inexperienced.

I do mind that she's trying to claim credentials she hasn't really got.

BTW, my art degree and 10 years of practice doesn't make me a good artist.

So you don't know, its just a "belief?"

But regardless, it was Rayner who didn't pay the tax, not Reeves or anyone else.

You obviously don't like Labour, i don't like Tories or as the party is currently known as, Reform, but i also think that the level of hypocrisy is spread very evenly both in politicians and the general public.

He led the country to Eat out to help out, causing extra deaths & costing billions, wrote off 11billion in Covid fraud and led us too a recession in the last 6months of 2023.

As a banker, he bet against the UK and helped cause the Global financial crisis.

As an almost billionaire, he has no idea what ordinary people have to contend with ie He went without Sky as a child.....

In the 1970's my Dad was an 'Economist' and he was only in his late twenties - early 30s, he certainly did not need 30 years experience to work in that position!

Obviously any politician not paying tax is a scandal but labour are usually the party arguing for higher taxes and tories are the opposite.

I liked rayner, she was great, reeves obviously didn’t like her, you could tell from the body language most likely she was seething with envy

Whats the connection between her linkdin profile, being involved in complaints at HBOS and "Rachel from Accounts?"

She has never worked in Accounts.

I don't recall Hunt being called "Jerry from the bookshop" he had a publishing company.

Hunt Cxxt they rhyme and a profuse apology followed, as far as i know, it happened once or twice, not fairly often.

Edited

Nobody is suggesting she worked in accounts 😅 Do you not know how jokes work?

Her CV on LinkedIn claimed she worked as an Economist at HBOS. Her actual job was something much more junior, mundane and much less impressive sounding.

She was keen to portray herself as a senior industry figure tackling the economic system, when in reality she was just plain old 'Rachel from Accounts'.

Labour aren’t helping with NI policy and hitting business confidence, even if Labour on mn can’t see it the CBI can.

Hypocrisy? never heard of it!

The Tories took personal and general taxation to the highest levels since the 1950s, their freezing of tax thresholds will lead to pensioners paying tax on the state pension.
They also took debt to almost 100% of GDP

Any of the traditional views of the Tories and the economy are dead an buried.

I like Rayner too but regardless of jealousy or leaks, Rayner was the author of her own mis fortune but her actions would only be hypocrisy IF she avoided tax deliberately, so far HMRC have not decided (or we don't yet know)

Exactly. It's no coincidence that the 'Rachel from Accounts' nickname started in the Treasury, presumably when her colleagues began to realize that she wasn't quite the economic mind she portrayed her herself as.

Most individual Tory mps go into it wanting tax cuts doing speeches about it etc it’s part of their philosophy whereas labour politicians do the opposite lecturing us all on paying more tax.

But whatever it’s to be expected at this point.

Rayner was great and what she did wasn’t even that bad. There was a witch hunt I mean why in the lead up to her downfall every day there was an article in the news of her vaping on a float in the sea? Why of all the nice pictures use that one?

peanutbuttertoasty · 25/11/2025 14:02

‘Wasn’t that bad’… is that the benchmark for a ‘great’ politician? How depressing.

Eat out to help out did help hospitality at the time. There was always going to be second wave and another lockdown. It was inevitable.

He did a lot with furlough and tried to support businesses during lockdown. Yes there was always going to be some fraud. But they did the schemes at rush to protect the economy.

As a banker he did what had to do to make money for clients. I think it's good he's a billionaire. It's mostly due to his father in law's wealth.
