Has Reeves hit a new low- saying it's misogyny?

Christmaspuddingsss · 25/11/2025 07:59

I couldn't believe I was reading this today.

She accuses her critics of being against her budget plans because she is a woman. (But ignores the number of U turns she's done because of the criticism from back benchers)

Using the 'misogyny' card is really desperate IMO.

I think Boris was a twat. Rishi Sunak is perfectly decent and honourable.

I agree, with Rishi Sunak it was policy differences, with Boris Johnson it was about his consistently disgraceful treatment of women in his private life.

As for Rachel Reeves, I do think that there is greater criticism because of being the first female Chancellor. A man following the same policies will still be criticised though.

Calling her Rachel from Accounts is highly misogynistic

How exactly? Demeaning perhaps, but misogynistic?

Being mean about a woman politician is just that, being mean… It’s only misogynistic if it’s suggested she’s doing a bad job because she’s a woman.

Tkmaxxx · 25/11/2025 15:28

Oh and I just google it and found there’s more!

“It must be generally plausible that if having a baby out of wedlock meant sure-fire destitution on a Victorian scale, young girls might indeed think twice about having a baby.
And yet no government – and certainly no Labour government – will have the courage to make the cuts in the safety net of the viciousness required to provide anything like such a deterrent. For the reality, surely, is that nine times out of 10 these girls will go on having babies out of wedlock not because they want to qualify for some state hand-out, but because, in their monotonous and depressing lives, they want a little creature to love.”

but sure “scum” is a big deal

If you actually read what he’s saying, I can’t see what’s particularly wrong or inaccurate about what he said.

What U turns has she done?

Winter fuel payments for starters… cuts to disability benefits too.

SatsumaCandlesCloves · 25/11/2025 20:08

Does anyone care that's she's the first female chancellor ? It's great a woman is finally in this role but we've had female pms ? I know labour like to make a huge deal out of it because they only have white men as pm ...but ..I think that ceiling is already gone

Raising income tax another u-turn (twice!)

Are you including the part where he said children of teen mums are illegitimate aggressive bastards or just what I quoted in that one comment?
Either way you really agree with looking down on people thinking their life must have been depressing and monotonous because they had a baby young?
I mean of course he’s free to say what he wants but you can see why she wouldn’t like it for personal reasons. I don’t think merely saying “scum” comes close to such a nasty monologue as what he said

GentleOlive · 25/11/2025 21:04

Ken Clarke thinks she’s deceiving herself if she thinks she’s doing a good job and that’s she’s the victim of misogyny. And he’s no extremist or novice when it comes to politics and the economy.

Southernecho · 26/11/2025 08:10

Phillip Hammond thinks she is perfectly capable & "qualified" of delivering a "good" budget & that she is a victim derogatory language, with the use of Rachel from Accounts.

Markets like the "noise" coming from no11, Gilts continuing their downward trend...
FTSE up and £/$ up.

"Neil Wilson, UK investment strategist at Saxo Bank, warns that the markets could wobble if the budget doesn’t land well, saying:And there is ample reason to think it won’t. For starters it’s hard to see how the Chancellor can pull off tax hikes that won’t crimp growth, forcing the Bank of England into more aggressive rate cuts (that’s the best outcome we can foresee). At worst it’s going to be a currency-toxic combination of fiscal tightening of the most productive bits of the economy, sharp contraction in growth, deeper monetary easing and the cherry on the top of a political crisis as Labour MPs start to move on the Reevers/Starmer leadership"From The Grauniad

I know you'd like all of that but its pretty sure we know most of what will be in the budget and the markets seem ok with this.

I don't know the future but i hope she gets it right and its a success, i want the UK to do well over the next few years.

No I don't wish her well. She's wrought too much damage to me personally.
I want the country to succeed, I don't believe it can under her + Labour's rule.
I don't believe she is competent enough to lead the country.

So you'd rather the country fail than improve, it explains a lot.

We are where we are, Labour are in for the next 3.5 years, these 3.5 years will happen, even if the Tories had won in 2024, i'd have still wished them well, a successful govt, whatever the colour, benefits us all.

I lost my job as a direct result of Austerity - i took the opportunity to retrain and in doing so, made even more money, i didn't mope about feeling sorry for myself, blaming others.

I never held Osbourne personally responsible and when Cameron won again in 2015, i hoped he'd make the country better.

Brexit though, was a step to far, that screwed the entire country, not just my plans.

Its in all our wider interests for Reeves to do well.

Yes because I blatantly said I want the country to fail didn't I? When I said "I want the country to succeed, I don't believe it can under her + Labour's rule" that's me saying I want the country to fail 🙄

You are purposely misreading and twisting my words as per.

Just give it up, we aren't ever going to agree on anything, especially Labour.

It’s clear don’t worry. The paraphrasing and twisting is just bizarre.

The reality is a lot of people want her replaced with someone better? It’s very hard to turn this county around, she tried and has in some people’s opinion failed at it.

Well you did start this latest bout by replying to me... a few posts ago...... you didn't have too.

...but i have to "give it up" give over!!

Wishing her to fail but wanting the country to succeed ..... really? the 2 are intrinsically linked, Reeves fails, the country fails.

So in future, as i asked you on another thread, pls stop quoting me.

Who?
Policy is decided at Govt level, whoever took over, will still be bound by Labours wider policies & by the economic realities & spending commitments, not least on far more Defence spend.

Reeves doesn't appear to be going anywhere, so my point still stands.

My own view is overall, she is doing ok, but i certainly don't agree with all she has done by any means.

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 10:17

It is not true. Reeves was sold as a Centrist who would turn the economy around and would be pro business. They did the whole City of London tour before she got in and people wanted to believe her. She then failed to make cuts and her own MPs did not get behind her. If there is someone better out there, they may do a better job at turning the economy around. This is what a lot o people now think. The fact she is puling the misogyny card shows she is worried. I wish her well. It was a poisoned chalice, but we are were we are. If this Budget is badly received, she will have to go, for the greater good of the country, surely?

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 10:20

And let’s not pretend the misogyny is not from within her own party primarily! It is. Just like it was with Teresa May - they also sold her to the wolves.
I would really like Reeves to turn things around, but it looks unlikely at this point.
