Has Reeves hit a new low- saying it's misogyny?

I couldn't believe I was reading this today.

She accuses her critics of being against her budget plans because she is a woman. (But ignores the number of U turns she's done because of the criticism from back benchers)

Using the 'misogyny' card is really desperate IMO.

Well Starmer must have a plan B if it all goes pear-shaped, surely! Not like it would be the first time he did a shake up. Nor that a Chancellor resigned or was replaced.

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 10:33

Let’s be clear though, if Reeves does go, it is not just the “right wing media” - it is her own party that failed to back her fully and inspire confidence all round. They knew, these leaks have been horrendous etc. and what they did to her previously was unforgivable. That is why she cried. Perhaps all the MPs need some training. If this happened in any normal work place, we would all be sent to a work shop!

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 10:17

It is not true. Reeves was sold as a Centrist who would turn the economy around and would be pro business. They did the whole City of London tour before she got in and people wanted to believe her. She then failed to make cuts and her own MPs did not get behind her. If there is someone better out there, they may do a better job at turning the economy around. This is what a lot o people now think. The fact she is puling the misogyny card shows she is worried. I wish her well. It was a poisoned chalice, but we are were we are. If this Budget is badly received, she will have to go, for the greater good of the country, surely?

Oh yes, if this budget is a disaster, of course she has to go.

I don't think it will be because so much is already known, there aren't supposed to be more business taxes & so far the markets are stable.

She needs to tackle welfare reform

Its funny, the city of london is doing very well, her reforms on that have gone down well.
Gilt yields below pre GE levels too.

I don't know why she cried, i doubt it was 'pressure' she has been a politician for a long time.

My guess is it was a more a physiological reason.

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 10:50

@Southernecho - I hope you are right! I am immensely bored of the political turmoil of the last 10 years! It is a farce all round and would be good if we could all just get on with life without the constant anxiety of what central government politicians will spring on us all next. The world is bad enough as it is with Ukraine war etc, we do not need the extra turmoil from our own MPs.

Frenchues · 26/11/2025 11:52

As Chancellor was Gordon Brown more liked?

Remember the mini-budget of 2022? 3 years on, we still talk about that and the disaster it was. At the time there was a female PM and a male Chancellor. Who do we/the media blame? The PM.

Now fast forward to current day where the government has made a complete mess of their PR with u-turn after u-turn and some very odd and unpopular economic decisions. We have a male PM and a female Chancellor. Who do we blame? The Chancellor.

Do you see a pattern...?

THIS!!! I say this all the time! It’s so blatant! And the way Reeves is talked about in the media. It’s all “ she she she” If they were talking about Hunt or Kwarteng they would mainly say “ the Chancellor” or “ Mr Hunt”.
I don’t remember even after the financial crash the chancellor getting anything like this much personal attention.

GentleOlive · 26/11/2025 12:25

Before she even starts speaking, UK gilt yields are already up, so every taxpayer is paying more debt interest. That’s how much confidence the markets have in Reeves’s not sure she can cry misogyny at that.

The markets don’t care about your gender. Only if you know how to do your job. Which she doesn’t.

EasternStandard · 26/11/2025 12:29

Another tax hike £26bn after the last one was a ‘one off’. It’s the lies that mean she and Starmer are the most unpopular.

Her days are numbered. The entire budget has just been published by mistake. You could not make this up.

matresense · 26/11/2025 13:11

@HoskinsChoice@TwelvePiecesOfFlair

yes, kwarteng was chancellor, but it was pretty clear that it was truss’s vision he was driving. He was also sacked in an attempt by truss to appease the markets and maintained a relatively dignified stance without casting blame.

contrast Reeves - two disastrous budgets, total disarray, no vision on growth and still in post. It’s pretty hard to see her as hard done by.

Well, so far £ up against the $ and Euro, FTSE up and Gilt yields down....

This must be a bitter pill for some....

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 14:18

@Southernecho - she appears to have averted a crisis and kept her own party happy. But a lot of the tax increases will bite close to the next election, so it is going to cost them and they will be known as the party of welfare.
I am not convinced about house building and tenants. I firmly believe this is the economic weak point of the UK and they have made things worse there, not better. The main issue for families is around high rents and high energy costs and high childcare costs. Getting rid of child benefit cap means nothing if energy and housing costs wipe it out completely.
A mansion tax affects only a small amount of people but if it dampens activity and depresses housebuilding further, that is really bad news.

EasternStandard · 26/11/2025 14:27

Reeves and Starmer will be hit by the electorate instead. Fine.

Yes markets appear to be reacting favourably.

Nothing in there which will result in panicked calls from my clients for me.

It wasn't great, it wasn't bad, it wasn't particularly exciting, but seems to have pleased the markets.

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2025 14:34

I did enjoy all 3 women having the floor though, not a peep from a man for a change!

Looking back now, what exactly did anyone expect? This is a massive Labour majority Government which people did vote for, thinking Starmer&Reeves would be Centrist, and now it is full on Labour policies all the way for the next few years. All kind of very obvious, in hindsight. If there is no macroeconomic luck turn via peace in eg Ukraine, this will be Labour down and dusted for the foreseeable.

Well yeh it’s taxing people instead. Instead of calls it’ll be lost votes.

Yes, Gilts lower than pre GE, future borrowing costs will be lower.

FTSE up nr 1% and at todays valuations, thats a lot.

So much for the howls from some pp that "Markets will collapse and Reeves will go..."

Good news on apprenticeships for SME businesses too.

Southernecho · 25/11/2025 13:43

AI says it started in the media and you can bet it wasn't started in the Mirror.

It was started in the Treasury. The media and opposition politicians picked up on it after the Times piece ran.

GentleOlive · 30/11/2025 09:17

She keeps hitting new lows everyday.

She lied to parliament and the country to hike taxes to give out more benefits. Lying on her CV was just a glimpse into what she’s all about. One a liar, always a liar.

She needs sacking, now.
