The racism on the Huntingdon train threads is appaling

Just as the title says. The blatant racism and jumping to conclusions on the threads has been terrible. Mumsnet used to be a more informed intelligent place.

People no longer feel safe in their own country.

People no longer feel safe in their own country.

Feelings are emotive and not always based on reality.

Don’t call him by his first name. He is not your friend. This is how it begins. This happened with Johnson as well. People jovially referring to him as “Boris” and “BoJo”, and look where that got us all.

I understand that you’re not on his side, but it’s still legitimising him, and he’s one of the chief architects of this horrific society we’re in.

You're right, I call him by his official title 'cunty old grifter'

We are an incredibly safe country. Incredibly safe. There are just a lot of cunty grifters that don't you want to think this. It's all just a grift.

Do you mind disclosing where is your home country?

stomachamelon · 02/11/2025 20:47

@Custardcream84 I don’t feel like that at all. Reddit and their ilk are far more extreme.

It seems to be that what you can and can’t say has just changed enormously. People are constantly boundary pushing. I have found they (mumsnet) do challenge posts that are beyond the Pale but that was a fast moving event last night. And they have to give people a right to robustly challenge and not lose the whole thread. It’s not a job I would want to do and it’s nuanced within ‘free speech’

The evidence shows that feelings about safety have nothing to do with facts. Has occurred to you that there are certain grouos of people who benefit from your feelings and therefore stir them up?

Mumsnet has changed so much over the years, it’s really upsetting to read these views on here and for such hatred to be tolerated.

I had a look at facebook earlier but decided to stay away because it was awful. (Not friends but the comments under each news update from various sources that I don’t even follow).

It just needs to catch on now, nobody would take him seriously if his name graphic on Question Time had 'Cunty Old Grifter's under it 😂

The thread was dominated by a handful of posters speculating that the attack was the work of Geordie football hooligans or hoping the attacker was a white man. How is that not all about advancing a particular political agenda? There were also plenty of Norm MacDonald 'the worst thing about terrorism is Islamophobia' posts. Anyone even suggesting that importing hundreds of thousands of undocumented young men from ultra-violent countries was a bad idea was promptly scolded because noticing violence is somehow more hateful than enacting violence.

It wasn't the time to say that illegal migrants were the cause. Especially when police had asked people not to speculate. I do think more should be done to sort out illegal migration but yesterday was not the time to debate that.
I have to admit that my fear was that if it was a migrant what that might lead to.
There really wasn't that much concern for the victims don't know what that says about us as a nation.

Lol, that would be very entertaining. Would certainly put the COG - loving BBC in a pickle with the swearing! I wonder if they'd have him on TV/run so many positive stories if this was how he was addressed?! :-)

KeepYourDraft · 02/11/2025 20:52

The racism here generally used to be a minimisation of people’s experiences. It’s now much more overt.

This case on the train with one man acting alone? If I had to guess, I would think this was someone unwell and acting on psychotic symptoms, but let’s see what transpires. Those poor victims must have been utterly terrified.

Yep - all this faux mateiness by calling him Nigel is exactly like Boris - - realise you aren’t at all like that of course - but so many idiots do - they even buy into the pint and pub man of the people image because he hates the same people as they do , - fact is the guy drinks posh wine, ( my son has lots of friends in parliamentary circles) has an EU passport, an EU home and an EU pension and girlfriend - you couldn’t make it up!!

My lovely (NHS midwife too) neighbour was going to vote for him last election. I asked her why, she replied 'well, he seems like a laugh'. Knew nothing about him, about his policies, about his racism.
Scares me.

It’s not my feelings op. I live in a very safe area. It’s my observation generally. I don’t see racism, I see alarm. I see fear. I see genuine confusion that we are seeing such awful violence in our peaceful country.

I see the left shutting down debate left, right and centre and screaming racism. It is only serving to further division as far as I can see.

freakingscared · 02/11/2025 20:59

Is it really racist to simply question it was a terrorist attack ? Most attacks have been by Muslims . Why is calling a spade a spade seen as racist ? Stating a fact is not racist imo . And no I’m not a crazy right winger I voted left all my life , I’m simply saying that not allowing a discussion to take place will push more people to idiots like farage

I reported so many posts. I can't believe MN allowed the threads to stand. They were / are festivals of misinformation, racism, Islamophobia, and general hatred against immigrants.

Not to mention the rampant speculation is directly against police requests and generally against site rules.

Your response to an appalling, brutal attack is to go through threads looking for people to report? 👏

Op, crime is not falling at all, but confidence in the police is flat lining. The result being that people simply don’t report crime as much as they used to.

What exactly is your agenda here? The tone is very odd on this thread. Not the usual MN angle at all. Almost spad like.

Elon Musk is openly talking about civil war abd about how migrants are descending on villages and raping kids.

These messages are constantly repeated on social media.

And this has no impact on how people feel?

Perplexed20 · 02/11/2025 21:05

I have no problem about people having a reasoned discussion based on facts. I have a problem with the racism abd the normqlisation of these. Made so normal people dont even realise its racist.

You know that's rubbish. It's racism & misinformation reported not the attack.
