Trans woman in Riot Women! WTF?

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Agree. I liked the show in all other respects but this was so jarring.

HermioneWeasley · 18/10/2025 20:02

i suspect the BBC insisted. It would be one thing if he was a character working in the bar- it’s hebden bridge, there are trans people, but to have a man in a band about women’s issues is a fucking insult.

PerriFuckingSickOfIt · 18/10/2025 20:03

🙄

SocksAndTheCity · 18/10/2025 20:04

Ffs, I was going to watch that. Oh well, that's a few hours of my life I've got back.

Exactly- was looking forward to it.
sigh

LuLuLemonDrizzleCake · 18/10/2025 20:06

What a shame. Won't bother with it now either.

Don't waste your time. I watched about 20 minutes and had to turn it off it was crap

PerriFuckingSickOfIt · 18/10/2025 20:09

I watched an episode and will watch more. It’s not a toilet you know, it’s just a TV program.

Okiedokie123 · 18/10/2025 20:11

Urgh that’s so disappointing. The drama and that Sally chose to do that/ had no choice.

Holdonforsummer · 18/10/2025 20:15

I’ve watched it and absolutely loved it. The teams character is very lovely and sympathetic and I can’t imagine why anyone would have a problem with her. Gosh, why does everything have to be a battle?

Cheeringmeup · 18/10/2025 20:16

I watched the first episode and am not particularly engaged, but will give it a chance. The trans woman actor is not 'in the band', she's one of the band member's child, so I have no problem with that.

Theroadnottravelled · 18/10/2025 20:17

FFS chill out. He’s not a major character and stands in to help out. The drama is brilliant and it’s about women (biological or recognised) and their fight to be noticed and not taken for granted. It’s not about trans rights but being part of a movement.

crumpet · 18/10/2025 20:17

I haven’t watched it yet. Is it written as a trans character or cast as a trans character?

Shegotanology · 18/10/2025 20:19

Would you prefer that trans people not be represented on TV?

Ah bless your innocent little tv-is-real-life heart. You don’t think that there might have been a reason to write the trans character as ‘very lovely and sympathetic’ rather than any other way?

Kuretake · 18/10/2025 20:24

It's a fantastic programme, one of the best things I've seen in years I think. I'm not sure why a trans character spoils it for anyone. It's not like it's an all female cast otherwise.

OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 20:24

I'm still watching it and enjoying it but just a bit irked by it! Don't want to put any of you off from watching as it's otherwise really good.

I rolled my eyes a bit but can’t be too fussed about it. It was a minor part.

If the role grows in the next season (if there is one) in a way that is tied up with the concept of the band and being a woman I’d be pissed off.

Shegotanology · 18/10/2025 20:34

@AngelinaFibres I think you've got a huge battle on your hands.

I'm happy for anyone and everyone to be represented on TV. I'm not happy to have women represented by men in a programme whose whole premise is supposedly about women's issues.

Since it appears that the OP was a bit misleading though, I'll give it a chance Smile

RanchRat · 18/10/2025 20:36

Really good telly, get a grip.

Thought the same. To be honest, it made the show look dated already.

The trans character DOES: become part of the band. Why bother commenting when you haven’t seen it.

And yes, OP it really annoyed me too. The whole point of this is that they are singing about issues affecting women (of a certain age). These things do not affect transwomen.

Queenage · 18/10/2025 20:41

The trans character was roped in by their mum to stand in for one of the other characters. They aren’t a major part, and I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Some of it was a bit daft, and some of it was incredibly dark but it was actually quite powerful. Can recommend it.
