OneBadKitty · 18/10/2025 19:59

I usually love anything by Sally Wainwright, but what was she thinking by have a trans-woman in a band called Riot Women that is supposed to be full of menopausal women singing about HRT and other female related issues?

Jesus christ, can you not see that some peoples views differ from yours? Just don't watch it.

Would you prefer that trans people not be represented on TV?

Trans people are welcome to be represented on TV - as long as the character They’re playing is also trans. After all, the trans community would have an absolute fit if there was a trans character being played by an actor who wasn’t trans. See also Black characters + disabled characters.

Trans people on TV as trans people. They have their issues.
A trans woman doesn’t have any women’s issues given they are male.

Exactly- was looking forward to it.
sigh

You're not going to grow a penis by watching it 🙄

DiscoBob · 18/10/2025 20:53

Gawd. I clocked that character but just thought they were a side character. I don't like the idea of them actually being part of the band. Wrong sex, wrong age!

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 18/10/2025 20:55

I am as gender critical as they come.

He has such a minor part though, in the show and the band. I can't say it ruined anything for me.

Whosunreasonable · 18/10/2025 20:07

Don't waste your time. I watched about 20 minutes and had to turn it off it was crap

You might have liked it if you had watched a bit more. It got much better towards the end of the first episode I think.

Pifflepafflewifflewaffle · 18/10/2025 20:59

The young Asian sisters and the main singer aren’t menopausal either, why aren’t you clutching your pearls about them?

I’ve watched it and absolutely loved it. The teams character is very lovely and sympathetic and I can’t imagine why anyone would have a problem with her. Gosh, why does everything have to be a battle?

In what way is the lovely trans person
male eexperiencing menopause?

That doesn't work anymore.

Well this is quite the statement.

Quite the bigoted and prejudiced statement.

PhewForAMinuteThere · 18/10/2025 21:04

How sad for you that you let your prejudice ruin your enjoyment of an amazing programme. Ridiculous.

The program isn't specifically focused on the menopause. There are men, women, children of all ages.

The trans character DOES: become part of the band. Why bother commenting when you haven’t seen it.

And yes, OP it really annoyed me too. The whole point of this is that they are singing about issues affecting women (of a certain age). These things do not affect transwomen.

'These things' didn't affect the young women in the band either, but they were still allowed to sing backing vocals and dance.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 18/10/2025 21:28

Numerous comments about this issue on the telly addicts board.

BBC just had to force in a bloke in a frock.

Shame on all involved for giving in to it.

The irony of this considering title of the programme and the band!

It was utterly insulting to see him stood there singing about issues which ONLY affect women in a supposedly all female band with apparently nobody at all thinking this was in any way inappropriate at best or ridiculing and misogynistic at worst.

Can you imagine the outcry (quite rightly) if a white person was in a drama all about black or asian people made up to look dark skinned and appropriating issues which were not theirs?

That would never happen because the BBC can see that is wrong but they are entirely captured when it comes to ignoring women.

It isn’t enough that men rape us, beat us, murder us in enormous numbers.

They now want to own our trauma.

They want to consume us by being us.

The trans activists go on about their existence being denied when in fact that is exactly what they are doing to women.

Cyclebabble · 18/10/2025 21:32

So far I have only got through the first two episodes. I thought it was really good. A trans character does not really worry me TBH. it is set in Hebden Bridge where alternative lifestyles are very much a thing. I still think it is a drama that talks about the lives of middle aged women like me who are often massively marginalised.

LeanToWhatToDo · 18/10/2025 21:34

Yes, the irony of it - didn't get to that until halfway through and thought, what? Did he really have to join the band? Completely dumbed it down. Hardly as if it was meant to be trying to appeal to men in their 20s who might be transitioning, is it?

This with clearly added danglies.

CervixSampler · 18/10/2025 21:38

I wondered what was going on with that character and why they were calling an obvious man “she” but I was very tired and watched the first episode half asleep. Disappointed in SW. not surprised at the BBC.

Itiswhysofew · 18/10/2025 21:44

Yep, and that's why I'm not watching it. I don't watch TV anyway, but was at DMs when it started & thought I might carryon watching it, but no.

HeyThereDelila · 18/10/2025 21:45

YANBU. It’s such an insult.

Summerhillsquare · 18/10/2025 21:46

It was their terrible acting that offended me.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 18/10/2025 21:46

Cheeringmeup · 18/10/2025 20:16

I watched the first episode and am not particularly engaged, but will give it a chance. The trans woman actor is not 'in the band', she's one of the band member's child, so I have no problem with that.

He does join the band. You just have watched far enough yet.
