...to ask if I am I being a prude about these outfits?

bellav · 17/09/2025 08:30

My 11yo DD has taken a liking to K-Pop recently, but I am concerned about some of the outfits and dancing styles, especially as some of the singers are very young.

It feels to me like they are being exploited and sexualised at such a young age, but I am unsure how to go about discussing this with my daughter.

Am I just being a prude and showing my age here?!

Oh I wouldn’t bother discussing it with her op
what’s to discuss?
pop stars for as long as I rember have worn very scanty stuff (remember Christina Aguilara from decades ago!) and our mums did t sit us down and have an earnest chat with us about it

bellav · 17/09/2025 08:32

My worry is their young age. And not just what they're wearing, but how they're moving.

How old are they?

Seamoss · 17/09/2025 08:34

How old are you? What was your musical generation? Britney Spears?/Christina Aguilara? Madonna?

Non of this is new

Sleepeye · 17/09/2025 08:34

Youngest is 15
eldest is 29

i have just googled

Sleepeye · 17/09/2025 08:35

Average age 17.5

TizerorFizz · 17/09/2025 08:35

@bellav Yes speak to her. It’s a male problem really of course but she’s old enough to understand the connection between being suggestive and what men might think. I’d wean her off the K pop!

bellav · 17/09/2025 08:35

Sleepeye · 17/09/2025 08:33

Some as young as 14. Majority more like 16-19.

Yes, that's right.
Her favourite group started a few years ago and they are 16-22 now, so 14-20 when they started.

Parents have thought that singers gave been sexualised and inappropriate since music began.

It's a rite of passage to stress about it.

This just feels so much more extreme than anything else I have seen.
Has anybody followed the link to see how these girls are dancing?!

Yes, there is a very stark difference between how the boy groups and girl groups are styled in K-Pop. Even a more feminist group like G-Idle are styled very much like this, and the dance moves can be very bump and grind. And it’s all very much marketed to young girls.

Great tunes and lots of fun, shame about the rest of it!

Nothing like these girls! Unless I led a very sheltered life as a teen!

If you're looking at web pages that say what that one does, what do you expect to find?

As others have said, I grew up with Britney and Christina. It's nothing new.

Yes op

now look back on brittany in her school outfit
and Christina aquilara

both were writhing around in next to nothing in their teens

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 17/09/2025 08:39

Well, yes, they are being exploited. In many ways not just the outfits. It's a well-known things about K Pop

Just like Britney was. And the Jacksons were. And Lisa Zavaroni. And, and, and...

Did your mum ever have an "earnest conversation" or did she let you figure it out yourself?

Just discourage her from dressing like them if she wants to and you're worried

I am 49. Everyone was scandalised by Madonna's pointy bras when I was coming of age!

I think you need to spend 10 mins looking back Op before settling down for an earnest chat with your pre teen

Everyone my arse

I am 45. I remember singing “like a virgin” at the top of my voice in the car. I was… 12?

and my mum joining in!!

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 17/09/2025 08:40

14-18 is creepy but otherwise they’re pretty standard dance outfits/ moves except for the school girl one which is gross, but they’re definitely no worse than in “our day”. Christina Aguilera wore chaps and underwear for a long time!

Well ye, good point

If you look for the most extreme examples (so extreme they were almost too extreme) OP then it's going to be worse

Okay, fair enough. I wasn't aware of them as they were a bit after my time in terms of listening to that kind of music.

But whether it's new or not, it still feels like something that needs at least some discussion. IMO, these girls are being exploited for the male gaze and I feel like my daughter should be at least a little aware of that before she tries to copy them.
