To ask what’s made you think “I’m getting old” recently?

I’ve noticed I’ve got a favourite seat in the living room and it’s accumulated a few of my things on and around it like my handbag, sweets, book, medication (because it’s the only thing that helps me remember to take it) a couple of letters that I opened and haven’t put away yet and a pack of baby wipes.
Dh is watching the game just now and I’ve sat down in my spot and accidentally knocked my medication off the armrest. I turned to dh and said “ do you know what would be handy, a little table next to me so I can put all my bits and bobs on” 🤦🏻‍♀️ my life flashed before my eyes before the words finished leaving my mouth. I’m 41 by the way how has nobody told me about this monumental moment.

I’m wearing newly purchased Skechers slippers and have never been happier. I’m also currently looking for a new vacuum which is easier to carry upstairs and quite frankly it’s exciting stuff. Dread to think how my excitement levels will be when I’ve ordered one and it is due to arrive.

Totally get this. Mum ordered me a Hetty and laughed at me saying you know your old when your excited about a new vacuum cleaner. Same reaction when she bought my cat a covered litter box.

I had exactly this! Went to McDonalds and walked up to the counter to order. The teenager behind the counter looked at me greatly amused and pointed me to the touch screen. I stood for a while in front of it, utterly lost.

A group of us went into a McDonald's and all us oldies ordered at the counter. The young whippersnapper with us laughed and berated us for not embracing the new technology of ordering via the screens. He was the only one not to receive his order. Oh how we laughed!

Discussed hand luggage for the airport for my DM who is going on holiday. Recommended she take a rucksack (as i do) because "a handbag puts strain on one shoulder"

I've gone beyond that: I have a rucksack with wheels!

Looking at ugly shoes & thinking they look really comfy, I must get some. Moustache, chin hair & baggy eyes & chin. On the plus side as I'm the wrong side of 50, I no longer care what anyone thinks of me. It's really quite liberating ☺️

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 18/09/2025 20:34

My WTF lines… those bad boys are really coming to the fore at 46 😂😂😂. Even now considering Botox!

I'm considering becoming a two vacuum house. When MIL became older I noticed she kept a small vacuum in the box room to save lugging the main one up and down stairs. Upstairs never gets as bad so it makes sense.

RedFlagsAllOver · 18/09/2025 22:48

When my periods started acting up and I realised I was perimenopause. I hate it.

When DP moved in with me, we became a 2-Vacuum house… it’s brilliant… no lugging the damn thing up and down the stairs. I can highly recommend it!
Aldo, earlier this year, I bought me first pair of Sketchers - they are all I’d hoped they’d be… lightweight and haven’t rubbed my heels raw.

I have never been able to do that. I have always done them up at the front and turning it the right way round!

Glad I am not the only one, lol

Who can do up a bra at the back?? I have never been able to my whole life!! I've never heard of this being a possibility!! Wow!

Looking for my glasses when I was already wearing them

When I bought a new vacuum cleaner had my old one serviced that lives upstairs 😁

Fasten it at the front then twist it round and put your arms in!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 19/09/2025 09:28

Ha! Technology. My absolute Nemesis.

Every time I qualify for a phone upgrade, I sweep into the 3 store, explain I just want to make calls, take half decent photos, have Internet access and a bit of messaging capability, plus my banking app and email, shove the phone into the young person's hands, and basically say "make it so (please)".

And young person pats me gently on the hand, finds me the best and cheapest deal, and transfers everything over while I agree I do have more photos of my cats than is probably healthy.

And I walk away with a new phone that looks vaguely familiar, although some of the features will be in different places, and I still end up with three pages of apps that come as standard, that I don't have a clue about and I'm scared to delete in case it breaks something.

On a similar note - how come if I want to take a screen shot, it's like the launch process for a NASA mission, yet, when my phone starts screeching at me to delete extraneous images etc, I will find dozens of screenshots of my home screen taken completely unconsciously. What's that about?

Then according to rigby and peller lean forward and drop your breasts in for a better fit.

My son puts the apps that come as standard together to save space on the screen. I've recently discovered that if I swipe up from the bottom all my apps are there in alphabetical order 🙈

PennywisePoundFoolish · 19/09/2025 10:03

See, I love the McDonald's touch screen things as I hate giving orders at the counter/drive thru, as I'll forget what I actually want and ask for a Big Mac Meal as a panic-response. But the screens hate me and don't recognise I'm touching them. I have to get a DC to do it and they've decided I'm not a human 😭😅

Looking for my glasses when I was already wearing them

I have reading glasses scattered all over the house, and recently tried putting one pair on top of the ones I was already wearing 🫣

MrsAvocet · 19/09/2025 10:23

I'm old but a big a fan of touch screen ordering. For a start, anything that avoids me having to speak to a human being is always a plus point for me. If I can do something online or send a text/WhatsApp rather than phone I always will. But with food orders , McDonald's in particular, I have found since the touch screens came in, I get what I actually ordered far more often. I hate mayonnaise, ketchup etc and in the days when you had to ask I regularly got burgers with it still on but since the screens came in, never. My DS who has allergies likes things like this too as he can see the info himself and knows exactly what he is ordering. Anything that removes the number of links in the chain of communication is good in our book!

FurForksSake · 19/09/2025 10:29

McDonald’s app is very good and useful!

Yes, what is that about? I end up with millions of random screen shots in my gallery that I haven't taken, but when I want/need to take a screenshot it takes forever getting it to work. Angry

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 19/09/2025 10:36

Perimenopause. I was fine up until a couple of years ago, once that hit i was like "fuck I'm getting old".

I have a list of things I need to get, on there are exciting things like a draining rack and a shower screen. 5 years ago it would have been jeans and shoes.

Betandbob · 19/09/2025 10:39

@overstimulatedhermit

Can totally relate to this. I have "my seat" and I also have a little table beside it. I also keep my handbag beside my seat just like my Grandmother did. If kids are looking for something I tell them it's in the press beside my seat or its where my handbag is. They know instantly where to look.

Hibernatingtilspring · 14/09/2025 16:18

Mine was realising I have to now take my glasses off to be able to read things close up. I didn't realise that not being able to focus close up happens to pretty much every one with age, I'm scared I might have to get varifocals! I'm 43!

Why do varifocals scare you? I have bifocals and they changed my life very much for the better.

Greyhoundmad83 · 19/09/2025 10:46

Just my face every time I look in the mirror lol
