To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?

Disagreement in our house today. Do ‘most people’ (which after some discussion was pinned down to people in 30s/40s in eg 3 bed semi with a kid or two 😅) have their windows cleaned every 6-8 weeks?

YABU - of course they do
YANBU - definitely not ‘most’

We've lived here nearly 20 years.

Have occasionally cleaned the ground floor windows outside. Upstairs... never. Although they were replaced about 10 years ago I guess!

Not something that ever really occurs to me. We can still see out of them.

DisabledDemon · 08/09/2025 18:47

Once a month.

Zanatdy · 08/09/2025 18:47

Nope never have. When I was growing up we lived on a main road and had a biggish house with lots of windows. My mum had my dad up there every week with the ladder. My mum and my Nanna also mopped their outside steps every week. These are things i’d rarely if ever get round to. My mum doesn’t have a window cleaner now though, but she admits herself she isn’t as bothered by it, but also doesn’t live on a main road anymore and sadly my dad has been gone 7yrs, and even if he hadn’t, would have been 80 this year so wouldn’t have been going up a ladder anyway

Springup24 · 08/09/2025 18:47

I do feel like I now want a window cleaner though having read this thread!

34ransum · 08/09/2025 18:47

Genuinely SHOCKED at replies.

In 10 years at this address, not once have the outside windows been washed

They look absolutely fine, and no, I'm not a gruby person.

I wonder if it matters that we don't get much through traffic and live in a quiet area...

Ours are done every 6-8 weeks, in the front of the house. The back windows are done hardly ever, maybe once a year.

Same here, though it can be longer depending on the whim of our very long time cleaner. I clean the ground floor kitchen and dining room ones when the sun hits at a particular spring or autumn angle.

WearyAuldWumman · 08/09/2025 18:48

I get mine done once every 4 weeks. 3 bed end-terraced house.

8TinyToeBeans · 08/09/2025 18:49

I clean them myself as and when I can be bothered or they get bad enough to annoy me. I don’t want to pay someone to do something I can do for myself!

Nottodaythankyou123 · 08/09/2025 18:50

I’m in my 30’s with a kid or two living in a 3 bed semi detached and we get ours done every 8 weeks..

Theunamedcat · 08/09/2025 18:52

I've only just got a window cleaner because we are having houses built nearby (ish) and the dust is appalling they are building on food fields specifically carrots so lots of fine sandy soil up the windows and all over the car they are coming monthly and it's still a struggle to keep them clean they stayed clean this week but then a pigeon crashed into it

I'm reconsidering my life choices clean windows vrs suicidal pigeon (this is the second one in a couple of months and it nearly broke the glass)

MrMybug · 08/09/2025 18:53

We cancelled the window cleaner because they switched to using an extendable broom thingy with a hose attachment, and it a) is not very good at cleaning, and b) damaged the paintwork on the wooden windows and got everything wet.

Nobody seems to do proper window cleaning any more, and I would pay happily for someone with a bucket and a ladder.

Crole · 08/09/2025 18:53

Wow, this thread has really opened my eyes. We are definitely in the filthy corner over here 😳

We live on the first floor and our windows are a deathtrap, the ceilings are 10 feet high and start really low down. In Germany so the windows can open fully.

We tried to get window cleaners in twice and they said they needed special ladders and would come back with a quote and never did. So my partner cleans the lower ones when I'm not here to worry about it, maaaybe twice a year. The top windows haven't been cleaned in nearly 4 years since we moved in 🙀

To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?
KarbyBugger · 08/09/2025 18:53

Monthly, it's £15, never considered going every two months, might do that. On the flip side I might do the internal once a year

Devilsmommy · 08/09/2025 18:54

RedRiverShore5 · 08/09/2025 18:08

DH does ours so we are lucky if it's twice a year

Have we got the same husband? 🤣

sparebooks · 08/09/2025 18:54

We haven’t had it done for 3 years 😬
They don’t look filthy as the house has open fields at the back and gets a lot of rain and wind. To be fair though, a lot of spiders have laid their eggs in the corners and many spiderlings appeared- not so cute now they’re grown up and want to get into the house..

Wearenever · 08/09/2025 18:54

I've always had my windows cleaned monthly in every property I've lived in, I thought that was totally normal?! I just saw it was setting my parents had done from my childhood and followed suit without thinking about it. We live next to farmland now and it gets really dusty so I wouldn't want to skip it.
*Edited from weekly to monthly, that would cost a bloody fortune!

Tryingmybest100 · 08/09/2025 18:56

Ours are done once a month. Well worth the £20 we pay

wateraddict · 08/09/2025 18:56

One a month here, front one month, then the back the month after. Keeps the cost down and a regular routine for the cleaners, who are here on a commercial contract for a business in my street

EmeraldShamrock000 · 08/09/2025 18:56

My outside windows are done around May, once a year.
Internal, glass and frame every 6 weeks if they look grubby.

Philandbill · 08/09/2025 18:56

@Crole Oooh, have you got shutters? The sort that click down on a rope or electronically? I wish they were common here.

perimenopoppet · 08/09/2025 18:56

I got a long extender pole set off Amazon and do them when I remember/can’t see through the windows/have guests coming.

MargaretThursday · 08/09/2025 18:57

Our window cleaner retired over covid.
I was just thinking the other day I must try and find a new one.

BusWankers · 08/09/2025 18:57

I don't wash windows, unless they have some sort of splodge...

Life's too short.

Driftingawaynow · 08/09/2025 18:59

bigblueboots · 08/09/2025 18:12

This is the relatable content I’m here for! Anyone else just not have a window cleaner…?

Me too. Never ever, don’t care about it either

BurntBroccoli · 08/09/2025 19:00

Valmaine · 08/09/2025 18:11

Twice a month, for the last 16 years! It literally never occurred to me to ask to do them less than that! This thread is a bloody revelation!

Twice a month! How much do you pay? Is that just the outside?
