Couple having sex in front of window

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:05

My children’s bedrooms looks out toward a house in the distance that has a bedroom in which looks like a converted loft. They have big floor to ceiling windows and NO curtains.
We were told by my neighbour once that he saw the occupiers there having sex in full view in front of the window - this was during an afternoon.
My husband also witnessed their act just last night when settling the kids to bed. It’s not hard to miss because their light is on and they’re BIG windows. My husband said he saw a lot of detail.
Not to sound prude but I’m really concerned about my children one day seeing them doing it. I have both sons and a daughter and don’t really want to expose them to sex in this way.

I’ve been told I don’t really have much right to complain because it’s within their own home but I am thinking of writing a letter to politely ask if they would be able to get some blinds or curtains installed.
If they ignore it, is there anything else I could do?
What would you do?

What would you do?

Tell your husband to put the binoculars down.

Don't be ridiculous. There is no "sex show". Some people who live in a house some distance away are living their lives. Anyone who doesn't like it may buy their own blinds or curtains.

OP, if your husband saw a lot of detail, he must have spent a lot of time watching.

@EmmaMaria To be honest if anyone can see them simply by standing at their own window, it's not right.

Public decency and all that.

Why’s the husband the pervert in this? According to this, he can stand and watch them and have a wank and it’s not a problem as he’s in his own house.

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 11:11

It’s really weird and disingenuous that posters on here are telling you to ignore it.

It's AIBU - as much for entertainment as advice (which is what the Legal section is for). And sometimes as puerile as it is to some, it can be amusing to see people being outraged. Especially over what is in essence a story, and especially when none of us is in possession of all the facts.

😀

A young person I know ( with some learning difficulties) was standing at his bedroom window naked on a regular basis. Neighbours called the police who said it was an offence as had been viewed by children in the street. He was given a stern telling off

AlertEagle · 31/08/2025 11:11

People calling ops husband a creep but see nothing wrong with two adults shagging infront of the window with no blinds and lights on 👍

LovelyLuluu · 31/08/2025 11:12

I always wonder if some posters here like arguing the toss and wouldn't have the same opinion in real life.

Why blame the husband?

Talk about gaslighting- many posters here would get a gold medal for it.

AlertEagle · 31/08/2025 11:12

To everyone shaming ops husband for seeing them (not just him but other neighbours too) how would you react if it was facing your own childrens bedroom would you just draw the curtains and call your husband a creep or would you actually do something,

Toohightoofar · 31/08/2025 11:12

Iloveyoubut · 31/08/2025 10:29

What is everyone going on about? You can’t just ‘do what you want in your own house’ ffs. Is it ok for someone to stand bollock naked at their window and masturbate for everyone to see? No. No it’s not! And it’s not OP’s job to make sure her kids have to hide behind curtains in their own home to avoid them seeing a pair of idiots shagging. You’re will within your rights to phone the police if you want. You’re not allowed to just bang away in full view of people … believe it or not! Ffs.

This. There was a case local to me where a man was prosecuted for indecent behaviour in his house which could be clearly seen from the street.

They definitely wouldn’t

SerendipityJane · 31/08/2025 11:13

How far away are they? You've not said.

"in the distance".

Meandmouse · 31/08/2025 11:13

I am surprised at these comments.i shared a house a long time ago with a man who was given a caution for walking around naked in his bedroom. The only reason I was aware of it as I was off work and answered the door to the police. Apparently he had been asked repeatedly by neighbours to close his curtains as they could see him from their house when getting dressed. The police took it seriously and arrested him for indecent exposure so did the landlord who asked him to leave.
I would definitely ask them to close their curtains

TheCurious0range · 31/08/2025 11:14

I'd put a note through the door saying you're sure they're not aware but they can be clearly seen engaging in sexual activity when they are in their bedroom by neighbours including from your children's bedroom. Then if it carries on, they don't put blinds up or similar you know they are doing it deliberately and can report to police. It is illegal to engage in sexual activity even in private premises when it can be seen eg the man masturbating in his bedroom knowing the double decker bus is due

KimberleyClark · 31/08/2025 11:14

I would be seriously tempted to take a few photos with my telephoto lens and post them anonymously through their door. But wouldn't actually do it.

Victim blaming is oh so fashionable these days. I guess all these people who think it’s perfectly acceptable for kids to be exposed to a neighbour’s live sex show from their bedroom window are the kind of people who wander around naked at home and have sex whenever and wherever it takes their fancy, no matter if their own kids see them at it, they’re in their own homes so can do what they like.

Is that a joke?
In the distance means nothing.

Could be 100 yards or half a mile.

And unless there are no houses any closer, someone else is surely able to see them.

skyeisthelimit · 31/08/2025 11:15

To all the PP that think this is fine, do you have sex in front of your children ?

OP, of course it's not OK. Could you ring 101 and get some police advice on it? I'm sure people can be arrested for public indecency if they have sex in full view of other people whether in their own home or not.

Edited to say I just read the post from the police officer who said that police would take it seriously.

Try an anonymous note to start with, post it to them so not caught on Ring doorbell etc, and if they carry on, then contact police.

You can't keep your curtains drawn all the time just in case they fancy a bit.

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/08/2025 11:16

revising in sexual activity.

Thats one way to get the knowledge in.

BadWoIf · 31/08/2025 11:17

Honestly, some of the responses on here!

You're not a prude, OP, and I wouldn't want my kids being able to see the neigbours having sex just be looking out of the window.

I think the first step is to pop a note through their letterbox explaining that you can clearly see their intimate moments from your kids' bedroom windows and suggesting that they install curtains or a blind to use at these times.

If that didn't work, then yes, I think speaking to the police is reasonable.

If you still have no joy, perhaps a leylandii hedge at the bottom of your garden would do the trick. Or a tall, fast-growing bamboo perhaps.

suitcasesarepacked · 31/08/2025 11:17

doremifaso · 31/08/2025 10:46

Yes exactly and I’m not going to change my behaviour to avoid looking out my own damn windows. We like watching sunsets and identifying the stars in the skies with our children - without having o run the risk of seeing someone doing it doggy style ffs

That’s exactly what we felt too. In your case, I’d write a letter telling them that neighbours, including children, can see them. It’s not acceptable and unless they take measures to keep their private life private, you will involve the police to protect children.

If they think they are so far away no one can see, they’ll be mortified. If they’re doing it deliberately they might be concerned about a police visit.

florizel13 · 31/08/2025 11:17

YetanotherNC25 · 31/08/2025 10:16

You could not look? Your DH has clearly watched them ‘in the distance’ to see that level of detail. Close your curtains if you don’t want to see.
They’re allowed to have sex in their house. They’re also allowed to to choose not to have curtains spoiling their floor to ceiling windows.
And don’t write to them or you’ll sound even more like a prude.

Also who said OP doesn't have the right to complain...her husband? 😄 it's understandable she doesn't want her kids to see though, and if this couple are doing it in daylight the kids curtains probably won't be closed

I was subtly (maybe too much so) noting that the critical piece of this story has yet to be supplied.

Most people on planet Earth enjoy shagging and understand basic etiquette around discretion, rule number one being that you don't do it where there's even the slightest chance of children seeing you. You're not " cool" or " sex positive" for thinking this is acceptable.

Exhibitionists, they know what they are doing and find people looking at then a turn on. No different than pervs who show their ding dongs etc to kids in public. Call the police and let them take it from there.

I agree
